North Carolina QB Recruit
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Believe it or not, Akron got some solid street cred in the Carolinas with the NC State win. It could be the writer's way of identifying the MAC...they don't know Ball State down there, but they remember the Zips. -

Odd Corner Owner Miffed at UA
Captain Kangaroo replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
The several hundred gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual students at UA will miss a few guest speakers over the next few decades....but our stadium won't have a head shop next to the main entrance. I'm ok with that. "Anchored?" I would have used the term "blighted," but...whatever... So he agreed to it...and now he's throwing a fit? Nice.I refuse to buy any new bongs from him when his new store opens. I'm traveling to K.e.n.t. for all my Head Shop needs. Will anyone else join me in the boycott? -
Kyle Peterson to Walk On @ UA

Kyle Peterson to Walk On @ UA
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Wow, good luck to him, I hope Keith offered him alot to "walk on". You would think he would have offers somewhere else from his credentials to actually get some (scholarship) money. It does raise some questions. Isn't Rydell Brooks around 6' 4"? Is he content to remain a walk on?A walk on from Wadsworth...or...Copley or wherever local is pretty common. To have one pay out of state tuition to come to UA seems to make me believe a scholarship is expected to open up due to a transfer or drop out. No one would pay that for too long. -
Kyle Peterson, 6' 4" Florida 2A Player of the Year and finalist for Florida’s Mr. Basketball award has accepted Keith Dambrot's offer to be a preferred walk on at UA this fall.Unconfirmed rumor is he was considering Florida State, but changed his mind after the Zips whupped 'em a couple weeks ago.

I'm going to close this topic. It has run it's course, and it doesn't really reflect all that well on UA.If/when things go "public," the topic can certainly be addressed.

Some additional notes from the spring game:CJ11 starting off the game with 3 INT's in approximately the first 21 seconds brought back bad memories. The offense seemed to move forward rather than sideways. THAT was my favorite part of the day.The Blue vs. Gold "real" format was great. The old "offense vs. defense" scoring format sucked. Nice change.Nice to finally have the depth to have a full-blown spring game, rather than a weak exhibition of walk ons and guys that will never see the field in the fallB Williams laid a nasty hit on someone in the 3rd quarter. He's already at home in the secondary...I think he can have a "Dwight Smith-esque" game changing affect on that side of the ball this season.Hassan Hazime looks like he knows what he's doing. He's going to play this year, and be effective.Curtis Brown looked really good. Really tough running after the catch. I wonder if he'll get a shot at WR this year?Dennis Kennedy looked great...but there's no way I get too excited about him. He's pretty much been in hibernation since the NC State game.Matt Rodgers looked "ok." He seemed to make good throws...no horrible mistakes...but I didn't see anything "special" in him either. Time will tell...but he looks to be the starter to me.It would have been interesting to see KC Patterson toss a ball. You can tell that the coaches wanted as much tape as possible on Rodgers and CJ11, since Wagner got 1 series and the #1 and #1 guys got all the remaining snaps. If Aaron Williams can put on about 10 lbs of muscle this summer, he'll be a terror.Overall I thought we looked really good. Good depth, good size. Good team speed. CB is a concern, but we'll get help there in the summer. Ditto WR. QB? We're better of than last year, but by how much? I don't know.

The last half of 2008 we averaged over 4k. People showed up in very good numbers for the games that mattered. I agree with a lot of what's been said above. But I disagree that basketball attendance is all that bad. Good games now draw between 4k and 5k with regularity. For an arena that seats only 5,500, that's pretty good.Someone hit the nail on the head when they mentioned a new arena and how it would affect the "game day experience." Just as people stay away from the Rubber Bowl because it is a dump, people avoid the JAR because it is an oversized HS gym. Concessions are terrible. The wooden bleachers are uncomfortable. There are no loges for local companies to entertain clients. The JAR is a place to watch basketball. That's it. Which is cool with me...but if you want to tack on a few extra thousand people to the average Zips game, you need to accommodate the needs of people looking for something extra. A new arena with nice comfortable seats, that's kid friendly, with "club" seating, with some loges...that will get people off the couch and in the stands in impressive numbers. And we need a decent schedule and a consistently good Zips team too.

Zips Recruit Quentin Harding
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
If the Zips did have a scholarship suddenly appear, this is who I'd like to see fill it. He and Humpty could be the "Dru and Rome" of the next generation of Zips fans? -
Zips Recruit Quentin Harding

"Showing interest" is a lot different than "offering a scholarship." It could be that the Zips were the most noteworthy team to contact him, so he threw our name to the press? -

That's an astute observation. Grant was perceived to have a bad 2007 campaign...but the loss of Kiki...and subsequent replacement by Nate Robinson...didn't do the LB's any favors in '07.

Odd decision. considering he was a JD recruit and not an Owens recruit.

By "3-spot," do you mean the spot on the bench three seats away from from the Gatorade cooler? Conyers needs to work on his game BIG-TIME this summer if he's going to get into the 2008-9 rotation. I hope he doesn't waste his talent and athleticism...it would be a shame.
