Anyone interested in researching this one: What if Akron and Miami TIE? Who goes to the MACC then?
-
F Ohio U and their "fans." In my book, they rank right behind the pompous, arrogant brie eating bastards at Miami OH. The elitist attitude of the alumni, students and fans of these Universities makes me sick! Now there are exceptions, but for the most part they all suck!
-
TOLEDO! Did anyone see the game last night and Toledo's Uni's? What was that, a cross between a 1960's "throwback" and the 1980's practice uniforms? Those uni's are just flat out ugly!
-
I'll give you that. Cleveland, or should I say Butch Davis (recently) have really done well with their picks the past few years haven't they?
-
Just wanted to say I watched the game at my home with 5 of my buddies (most were Buckeye fans). In the end I have never been more proud to be a Zips fan! Great showing by the fans that attended, great effort by the players, great showing by the University (with the exception of the "delapidated rubber bowl.") I couldn't help but imagine the following scenario: Dateline 2008 - "Zips Open New Season in New On-Campus Stadium" The reigning MAC Champs Akron Zips will open the 2008 in their new home this Friday night, a game which will be televised nationally on ESPN. The game has been sold out for months as people in throughout Ohio are hoping to get the first glimps of the new 30,000 seat stadium. The opening of this stadium couldn't come at a better time as the Zips are coming off a season in which they were MAC champions and winners of the GMAC bowl where they defeated Ohio State 35-21. Coach JD Brookhart who just signed a new 5 year deal said, "it's an exciting time here at Akron and I'm looking forward to being a part of a new tradition of winning here in this new facility." Former Zip and current starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns Charlie Frye will return for the game and will be inducted into the Akron Hall of fame at halftime. I'll leave it to your own imagination for the rest... GO ZIPS

That's the most stupid opening statement in a sports story I have ever read!!!!! Doesn't the Defense of ANY team on ANY given night have the CHANCE to determine the outcome of ANY game?
-
Boy Hipsher would have been in trouble with this one!

Anyone else find it funny that:

I see the Beacon (David Lee Morgan) has a story on the stadium today, unfortunatley I cannot access it as I refuse to "sign up" for access to their website. Could someone post it on this site? Although I could pretty much tell you what it will say: "University announced preliminary plans for stadium.......blah, blah blah. University doesn't know how they are going to pay for it but say that students will not have to pay for it........blah, blah blah. Akron sucks, why build a new stadium when no one goes to the games anyway..... blah blah blah. Anyone going to the Ohio State game this weekend......blah blah blah." Sincerely, David Lee Morgan -
I still consider myself a "recent graduate," which is completely subjective, but anyway, I remember having pep rally's on campus as late as the 1998 season (I had graduated by then but was on campus that weekend). It was pretty cool. Bonfire, players and coaches spoke to the crowd, etc. I hope that comes back with winning. As for the on campus stadium, I think it would do wonders for UA. I went to a YSU game two weeks ago and the tailgate experience there is awesome. I was really impressed, there was lots going on and it was (if you can believe it) "picturesque." Having the game "on campus" definatley adds something to the whole experience. YSU is able to bring alumni, friends, fans, and outsiders (like me), to their campus and showcase all that is good with the University. My opinion of the school was changed after my visit to the game. On a side note, watched a program on PBS last night on the City of Akron. Learned alot, but found out one interesting thing about the rubber bowl. Apparrantly when the airport was being built they used dirt from the side of hill which now encompasses the rubber bowl. Once they were finished they wondered what to do with the hole in the side of the hill? Well we all know what they did decide. They showed before and after picture of the "hill with the hole," pretty ingenius if you ask me. Too bad there wasn't a big hill on campus they could've taken dirt from

During the Pittsburg/Miami game, the commentators were talking about Rothlesberger and the MAC. One commentator said something like this, "....the MAC is a great aquarterback conference with some good teams like Marshall, Western Michigan, and Akron."
-
Sorry "duh", I guess Kents' coaching changes aren't on my radar.
-
My point is that I expected a little bit more out of this team and this coaching staff.....I'm sure all of you did as well. I don't mind losing, especially given all of the factors that all of you list above, but I DO mind getting our asses kicked like we did. You know what would really make this all better for me? If we drilled Can't! I'm talkig like a 40 point win. JD, get these guys motivated, out-coach Pee's and win this game. This is BIGTIME! PUT UP OR SHUT UP!
-
I'm going to get straight to the point and am going to keep it short. We're bad, really bad. I haven't actually eyewitnessed a snap but have listened to the games on the radio and read the box scores. It's readily apparrent, we stink. Question is why? Is the talent level so bad that there is no way we can compete? I don't think its bad, but probably mediocre. I now think Lee probably got the most out of his players. But we now have a new system, new coach, and what do you get........... 0 and 3 and drilled 51-0 in this past game. But a "good" coach will make it respectable, I'd say all three games were NOT respectable. I'm not giving JD a pass here, we should have faired better in these games. As someone mentioned before, we all would like to see JD be the next Urban Meyer. Doesn't look like that is going to happen. It looks like this is going to take some time to turn this ship around. We all know that most Zip fans have given up, the question is will the "die hards" give up before this thing is turned around? I doubt I will make many games this year. In the end, I've been a Zip fan for roughly a decade now, and have never had a harder time being a fan than this year. It's like 1997 when we got drilled by Nebraska, I didn't mind as much then because I knew we were "building" a team for the future. 7 years later and we're still gettting "drilled." Well I'm tired of waiting, I'm tired of building and tired of Akron getting kicked around every fall. How long until this madness ends?

Can't seem to link to it anymore, did they move?

Went to the OSU/Marshall game this weekend and came away with some interesting perspective. First, let me tell you that I was there in 2001 when Akron played OSU at the shoe. I noticed some staunch differences and some similarties between that game and the Marshall/OSU game. Here are my thoughts: 1. Both Akron and Marshall came to win. Difference.......I think Marshall really believed they WOULD....Akron believed they COULD. Even after the tough loss last week to Troy State, Marshall still came in with the intensity and fight to win. 2. Marshall played "their game" to win for 4 full quarters. Marshall's coach, coached his game to win for 4 full quarters. 2001-Akron played and coached to win for the first two quarters. After the half, it seemed like Akron the changed their game plan. 3. Marshall has a huge fan base. There was alot of green in columbus Saturday. Probably 10 times as many Marshall fans as Zips fans in 2001. They were seen and "HERD" (excuse the pun, I couldn't resist). You could hear "We ARE......MARSHALL" throughout the stadium. Anyway, I'm sure it was a big lift for their players. 4. Marshall could have rolled over or given up several times in this game. Instead everytime they had a turnover or were scored on, they fired right back. For instance, 2nd offensive series for OSU, Zwick hits a wide open reciever for an 80+ yard touchdown. Marshall comes right back and marches the ball down the field for a score of their own. My point......at any given time in any game you might catch a bad break, it happens to all teams. Its how you deal with it that makes the difference. Marshall just seemed to let it roll right off thier back and moved on. Akron doesn't seem to do that. 5. Marshall did not seem physically overmatched, they did not seem slower, they did not seem overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the pagentry that goes on before OSU games. They were there to play football and win. Akron 2001, I think we were a little overmatched, definately slower and seemed overwhelmed at times. Bottom line, Winning is an attitude, its a belief, its a way of life with certain teams. Marshall seemed to embody that attitude this past weekend. I wish the Zips would.

I will not be there, already comitted to attend another game in which another MAC team and a Big Ten team lock horns in Columbus, Ohio. I still haven't figured out who I'm going to root for? Hate the Buckeyes, hate the Herd! Anyway fellow Zips, Have fun and beat MTSU!
-
I guess the real question is not when and where he was told he was fired but when SHOULD he have been fired. I say the second he came into the locker room after the Can't fiasco he should have got his walking papers. In the end it doesn't really matter. Lee is gone. Those that liked him will continue to be bitter , those who didn't like him will continue to rejoice , and those who just care about the program and school have already moved on.

I would be happy if that is the way things turned out this season (with the exception of the loss to Miami, I'm never satisfied losing to them ) Not bad for a first year coach with a new system. I think "predicting" this years Zips would be better entitled "guessing." No one knows how this team will respond to JD. No one knows what the learning curve is on the new O and D. No one knows what hidden talents JD might find, or what overhyped players exist. Unless you go to the practices (open and closed ones) and see the team firsthand there's no telling. I can give you predictions if Lee was still here, because I know him, his teams and how the teams responded to him. Here it is: "Zips under Lee Ownes in 2004" PENN ST* 28-52 L In typical Ownes fashion, the team goes into a BCS school's backyard, and gets their asses handed to them. PLay a good first half then blow it midway into the 3rd quarter with overconservative play and turnovers MIDDLE TENN ST 23-28 L In typical Lee Owen fashion, coming off the BCS loss, the Zips underachieve offensively and lose a game they should win. VIRGINIA* 21-52 L Zips reeling after the MTSU loss, play like crap, embarrass themselves. Can't ST* 42-21 W Players realize the season is wasted, play for pride only. NORTHERN ILL* 35-42 L Zips always lost Road games to Western Conf. teams. BUFFALO 56-21 W Lee owned the Bulls ! UCF* 35-10 W After a week of Lee making locker room quote after quote (ie "welcome to MAC FOOTBALL"), UCF hands us our asses! BALL ST 42-21 W 4 games left in the season and Lee's job is on the line for yet another year. He plea's with the players to "win one for the gipper." They come through. MARSHALL 41-38 Another year of Marshall playing for a championship and the Zips playing for pride, unfortunatley pride isn't enough. OHIO* 34-13 W I'll give Lee this one. For some reason, He always had the Bobcats number (maybe he had their playbook) MIAMI (OHIO) 17-35 L Zips players have nothing to play for and it shows. It's probably wrong of me to even post something like this, but hell, it was fun and hopefully for you, entertaining. Anyway, I'm now more thankfull than I was 5 minutes ago that JD is here, and LO is gone. So for that matter, it was a good thing.

perhaps you'd like to fork over the $80.00 to buy the Jersey? I'll pay the shipping and handling to send it there.

Which would mean more to you as a Zips fan?
JP Morgan replied to Big Zip's topic in Akron Zips Football
This is a tough one......If the birth to the 64 meant one and done, I'll take the motor city bowl in a heart beat. But if DAmbrot and the boys can make it into the second round or farther, I'll take the birth into the 64. I'm sitting here wondering which one would do more to promote the University Nationwide.? My guess is the NCAA tournament would.... if you get past the first round. The whole country watches that tournament. As for the motor city bowl, only MAC and die hard college football fans watch it. -
This in the description: Don't we all have NCAA eligibilty remaining? I don't remember using any of mine?

Guess I totally missed the sarcasm?

Pro Scout is not completely off the mark. We very well could be 0-3 at the end of September. It's tough to recover from 0-3. That being said, I really hope to see a more "fit" team than we've seen in past years. Size and speed does matter, especially against the Penn State's and Virginia's of the world. It's been a while since I've thought that the Zips were shorthanded on talent. I don't believe we are this year. I'm really interested to see how this coaching staff affects this team. You see some programs go from bottom to top in a matter of 1-2 years when a new coach comes in. Look at BG. Lets hope it happens here and we shock the MAC! Hey ProScout, what do you mean by this: How do you know this and do we really want him to?
