2006/07 - First game should be Walsh U @ Akron U
JP Morgan replied to ZipAnalyst's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Hey Pluto, we'll agree to play Walsh as soon as you call for Ohio State to play Akron in B-ball. -
I already posted my question:http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=10839

Most of you probably dont read the Warren Tribune Chronicle so I thought I'd post this over here. It's just another take on the bracket buster format from a YSU perspective. I actually agree with the guy :)BracketBusters involves too many teams By JOHN VARGO Tribune Chronicle BRACKETBUSTERS. For some NCAA Division I mid-major men's basketball teams, it represents the last chance at redemption in the eyes of the NCAA Tournament selections committee. While for others, like Youngstown State, Saturday is just another non-conference game. It's a shame the Penguins cannot trade in Saturday's game at Canisius for another Horizon League contest or use that as a practice day. They could use it considering the disastrous trip to Wisconsin where YSU lost to league-leading Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Green Bay by an average of 31.5 points - the first two blowouts of the season. The Penguins are unlike the Can't States and Akrons - the two best teams in the Mid-American Conference - which need Saturday's games to keep their slim hopes alive for an at-large bid for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Akron has an RPI of 67, while Can't State's is 100.The BracketBusters pits other mid-major teams with similar records against one another in hopes the victor does not have to rely on winning the conference tournament to receive an automatic bid to the tournament. This format also hopes to eliminate mid-major faux pas such as leaving deserving teams like Butler and Bowling Green, which each won more than 20 games in the 2001-02 season, out in lieu of a grossly overrated major-conference team. The BracketBusters are not meant for matchups like YSU at Canisius. Mid- to bottom-level conference teams like the Penguins should not be part of this event. Teams having a feasible shot at an at-large NCAA Tournament bid should be involved in the BracketBusters. Having 100 teams is too much. Who cares about Siena at Hofstra or Morehead State at Central Michigan? Those two, along with the YSU-Canisius game, are some of the 37 snoozer contests for the BracketBusters, which start Friday. The event tips off at 7 when Virginia Commonwealth hosts Albany. Two hours later, Nevada hosts Akron. Both games are on ESPNU. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN360, the network's Webcast, are also televising the real games of this fourth-annual BracketBuster.Meanwhile, YSU would be off with either more practice time or facing a Horizon League opponent Saturday. The Penguins are two games out of the coveted sixth-place, where they would host a first-round league tournament game. Fortunately, Detroit and Loyola, which are tied for sixth, both have to play at Beeghly Center. YSU also travels to Butler next week, but the Bulldogs are a tough team to defeat at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Penguins must win their two remaining home games and hope for some help to ensure that home playoff game.Speaking of Butler, the Bulldogs travel to play the Golden flushes for an interesting matchup at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center on the Can't State campus. Tipoff is at 12:30, and the game will be televised on ESPNU.Can't State travels to the always dangerous Buffalo before Saturday's crucial non-conference contest, while Butler hosts Loyola Thursday. OTHER SATURDAY GAMES ARE: Noon - Bucknell at Northern Iowa (ESPN2); Buffalo at Iona (ESPN360), 2 - Missouri State at UWM (ESPN2); 2:30 - Northern Arizona at Western Kentucky (ESPNU); 4 - Marist at Old Dominion (ESPN2); 6 - Louisiana Tech at Southern Illinois (ESPN2); 8 - George Mason at Wichita State (ESPN2); Samford at Ohio (ESPN360); 10 - Northwestern State at Utah State (ESPNU); and 11:59 - Fresno State at Creighton (ESPN).Enjoy the televised games, those are the only ones worth watching.

I didn't read Livingstons article as a "rip." on the Zips. Everything he said was true. The only pot shot was the comment about Travis and Joyce (who were not mentioned specifically) riding Lebron's coat-tails through high school. The Can't game in two weeks is huge! We need to beat them and remove all doubt that Akron is THE premier basketball team in NE Ohio.

I could write for hours on this subject, but I'll keep it short and limit to details not yet discussed above.I think a facelift for the JAR would help, add about 2000 seats and make it more like a typical conf USA or A10 arena. The feel of the JAR does not feel like "big time" basketball. CSU has a really nice arena, but with years of bad teams they don't get the numbers they could. There's a general rule in churches that your attendance on Sunday mornings will never average more than 80% of your total capacity. Never really got a good answer as to why but It's generally a proven phenomena across the board. Don't know how that translates to basketball arena's but I thought I'd throw it out.

E-mail Cleveland TV for Bracket-Buster local TV
JP Morgan replied to ZipAnalyst's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Is there any way or any person who can arrange a top secret showing of the game for the zipnation at a top secret site and have some top secret beverages? -
Interesting. I am looking forward to the responses by readers as to why they don't go to games. Mine is 3 kids under the age of 4

I don't see the Beacon ever changing their opinion of the university. They feel we are a community college with sub par sports programs. I think it may have to do with writers and managment. I haven't researched it, nor am I going to waste time doing so, but I would guess most are not from NE Ohio. They don't know anything about the University and didn't take the job to spend their days writing about the Zips. They want to e-mail their friends and family the stories they write on the tribe, cavs, browns, OSU etc. They want to be considered a "major newspaper." Serious coverage will only come with continued and sustained success on the field. If we win, serious National and Local coverage will come. I refuse to conceed that we "need" them. When you depend on some else to define you, you're stuck with what they come up with. I say define yourself!

No way, The Beacon has nothing to with it. As I've said numerous times, the Beacon is 2nd rate, not the U of A. I think it time for a "Beacon Sucks" emoticon. We can post it every time they screw up. Hell, it may be end up being the most used emoticon. To think the Beacon "will come around once we start winning" is a farce. Is Can't getting any better coverage today because of their recent success in B-ball? The Beacon does not dictate who WE are, we dictate who WE are. The University needs to do a better job with self promotion in the community. It's one thing to get the good people out in the community, its another to command their attention. We have made strides and UAM's out of the box thinking is moving us in the right direction but we need to beat some"big time" programs in football and basketball and get some national pub. Forget the Beacon guys, we don't need 'em!

Glad to see we held on for the win. Ohio is in "Free fall" mode after beating us. Can't's playing some good basketball right now. Moral of the story: Gotta protect your home court, hopefully steal a road game here or there. Go Zips!

Tonight shows that Tuesday was a fluke
JP Morgan replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I'll agree to disagree on whether Ohio is "good" or not. I guess we can agree that I believe we are the best team in the MAC due to our versatility and depth. Tonights win proves we can score 52 points and win. If you would have told me this afternoon we were going to score 52 points, I would've been nervous.I think we need to reach 20+ wins to have a good shot at an at-large to the dance. I think we can do that with eleven games left. Let's beat BG twice, beat the directional michigans and split the rest. 7 wins out the next 11 doesn't seem to daunting. I'm not hanging my hat on winning the MAC tournament. Its tough to win 3 games in 4 days. someone else gets hot, we get cold....its over. Lets get the 20 wins. -

Buffalo beating Ohio does not make Tuesday a "Fluke." Buffalo is a solid team. Ohio, another solid team, beat us by 3 on their turf. The east is a beast. Going into this three game swing I was hoping for 2 out of 3. Right now we we're 1-1. We need to go into BG and take care of business. No letdowns! -
Where's the AK-OLDIES forum for guys like me?
-
Down the stretch the Zips go cold. Just wasn't meant to be. All is not lost, the Bobcats still have to make a trip to the JAR.We need to bounce back thursday with a big win against Miami and head into BG with some momentum. Tonights loss is a bump in the road, and it happens to all teams.Go Zips!

You both are correct, I believe it was the 1996-1997 season when we knocked off Toledo (who at the time was like 10-0 or 12-0) we got a few top 20 votes (we were like 8-2 or something). Can't find it anywhere on the net but I'm pretty sure that we got a few top 20 votes then. Too bad the team tanked!

I love it!

Please Delete above post mods ! Very unclassy and unessesary

Well put GP1!

This is a typical mistake made by the Beacon. Mr. Gafney (the author) probably thinks that Central and Western are the same team. This is the reason I no longer read that rag.
-
2 months of coverage does not cancel out years of apathy. Plus the patronizing tone is still there in all their articles. I'm happy to see the additional coverage but I'm a long ways away from supporting the Beacon.
-
Welcome to the ZipsNation RobC2. You have found us becuase you, like us, were tired of the mis and non reporting of the Beacon. All I can say is "welcome home." Here you will find the most up to date and reliable information on our beloved Zips!As for your complaints, see the last 4 years of posts on this site. Every comment or question imaginable regarding the Leakin Urinal can be found.

Again, why would we follow Toledo's model? How many years did it take you to get "where you're at?" I think we'll follow our own course..........thanks though

I too see his arm strength is a bit on the weak side. That being said, In the right offense, that won't matter. I think Charlie has the "right stuff" to make it. I watched a program on Chris Carter the other day, when he came into the NFL they said he was was too big and slow to be a wide reciever in the NFL. In his prime any team in the NFL would have taken that "big, slow" wide reciever. Sucks he had to end his career in Minnesota (thats for you CK)Point = tangibles are important but so are intangibles. Only time will tell if Charlie is NFL material.
