I would say they moved on THEN had major FB success...particularly Mack. Nothing about UA football has been remotely successful since 2005.

Little Trimmie? What's that mean? Yeah, seriously. His post would have had so much more credibility if he wasn't so blatant about belittling me. I shared my opinion. So what? I thought ZNO was about intelligent discourse?!

I honestly don't have much respect for a guy who left like that. It's one thing to use a mid-major as a stepping stone, which I don't agree with, but he left Akron to go to another mid-major. Really hard to not hate the guy. Would be like KD saying F- Akron and going to coach at UAB or something. Best thing is that we have a national championship and he doesn't. So I say screw Mack and screw Houston! I wish everyone would put their bitterness aside. Climbing the ladder exists in all professions. It's unrealistic to find guys like Caleb Porter, Luis Proenza, or KD for every position at the University. If you ask me, it bodes well for the University because people leaving to climb the ladder means that they did their job here well and improved the University. Same with the attitudes towards Lebron. He did ONE thing that wasn't classy yet he is a strong supporter of the City and of our men's basketball program. Get over it! And other than men's soccer, UH is on a different tier of college athletics than we are. Good for Mack.

Beautifully said, Quickzips!

As a Dolphins fan and a Zips alum, thank you JT for your great play and representing both the Dolphins and UA admirably. Looking forward to seeing you as the first Zip in the HOF!

Now we need to start getting some points in the polls. If we beat VCU, maybe. As it is, I think it should take us a few more consecutive wins to be considered...for the Mid-Major poll. We don't have a chance at the AP Top-25 this year...see Quickzips post below for the rationale. I agree.

VCU at Akron on December 29th, 2011

Rock solid post! I agree with everything you say. I respect KD for what he has done for our program. It is no doubt elevated, and I want him to stay. However, I don't want him or the fans to be complacent in just being better than we were or really good for the MAC because neither of those things is really saying much...especially at a national level. IMO, we need to do one of two things or both in a single season to garner national attention: 1) start off hot...not losing games we should win (Valpo and Duquesne)...and winning at least SOME big OOC games (e.g. CSU, WVU, and VCU...especially at home), and/or 2) win a few NCAA Tournament games (but I'll take just one to start). These things will bring in more fans too. Winning by KD and the team should initiate more fans, not more fans showing up to initiate more winning. Sorry KD, you have that one backwards. -
I thought the question marks were a dead givaway? From the coach's show tonight, it appears Abreu has a fighting chance to play vs. VCU. The omission of any reference to Harney's availability makes me believe he will still not be playing. And, K.e.n.t. appears to still suck. K.E.N.T ALWAYS sucks!...even when they don't.

We are the doormat of D-1A football right now and just hired a proven winner of a head coach from the best conference in the country...and you guys are arguing like a bunch of school girls about whether the conference was really the best at the time or just one of the best? Seriously?! Do you realize how lucky we are to have him? He was undefeated one season!...in the SEC! Who was the next best candidate? This really could have turned out to be a disaster! And whoever is arguing about TW, again, who cares?! It was a great hire! I don't care who gets credit for it.
-
Because it won't take much to create a short-term improvement. How could things possibly get worse? They couldn't!

Interesting quote in there.... When other MAC teams were beating Akron senseless the past two years, it looked to me like it was a coaching issue as well as a talent issue. I think you're right. It was some combination of both. I know some people like to bash on ICoach, but I believe he was seriously lacking in adequate personnel in a number of areas. He may have been a bad coach, but no coach can win with bad players. I thought when you have a great recruiter, getting good players is not an issue?
-
I think this is a valid concern. It would be something I would clear up with him during an interview and let him know a return to the past staff will not happen. Nobody from the old staff gets a return trip. I was thinking the exact same thing. If the communication is adequate and these are the grounds for him being hired, I don't see an issue.

Likewise. Maybe we'll run into each other at a watch party? I want to start going to some of those. I don't really know anyone who posts on ZNO & I'd like to be able to put some faces w/ the names. +1

I don't think the candidates with current jobs would appreciate being on an announced short list. Either way we need to move faster as we are getting passed every day in the coaching carousel. I strongly disagree. It's better to wait a few days or weeks to make the right hire than to be hasty and get the wrong person. The former is the only way to break the vicious cycle whereas the latter costs us years and a lot of money. The wise thing to do is be patient and make the right move whether that be days or a couple weeks from now. In the short-term, this program is not going to be very good regardless of what kind of class is brought in this year.

Isn't Ianello up for a bunch of coaching jobs now that YouTube released him from his head coaching duties? White hot. White hot to the extent that his name is invisible on white paper on AD desks throughout the country.

Who Else Do You Support?
UAZipster0305 replied to jem101's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Seattle Sounders and Manchester United here. However, I've recently enjoyed watching FC Barcelona because Lionel Messi is the most creative player I've ever witnessed. And no, that doesn't make me a front-runner. I just appreciate quality futbol. -
Great post. And yes, unfortunately, the OOC games matter very little, and the MAC games don't matter much either. All that matters is that we play our best in the post-season. Given how rare it is for the MAC to be a two-bid league, this should be our approach every year.

Men's 4th Round & Women's College Cup Scores
UAZipster0305 replied to Crew8's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Well the game was just moved to tomorrow at 1pm(ET). NCAA decided the field was unplayable EDIT: Photo of the Field Conditions You mean the game wasn't moved to USF? Shocking! -
Uh no. Spielman was the coach of the Columbus Destroyers, an Arena Football League team, in 2005. He coached one season, compiling a 2-15 record. Sounds like the second coming of iCoach. I'll pass. If not Tressel, then Winters.

Darren Mattocks appreciation thread
UAZipster0305 replied to AkronZip54321's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
+1. Though I don't see him winning the Herman Trophy because we didn't advance far enough in the Tournament and in the games we lost and tied, he tended to be invisible. However, the latter could be taken as how important his performance is to this team's success. Zip MVP? Definitely! Herman Trophy winner? Not this year. -
Yes and yes.

We didn't deserve to win this one. Out of sync the entire game. Yes, maybe we got robbed on having a goal called back and maybe Charlotte's goal was soft, but they did what was necessary to win, and we didn't. Not to mention they had two really good opportunities that they didn't score on. We didn't even have that. Just a lot of corners (and not enough that were put across) and few shots on goal. Prior to the season and given the losses to our roster, no one expected us to win the National Championship. Realistic expectations had us winning a few Tournament games and we did that. We met expectations...nothing more, nothing less. The key to beating us was to shut down Mattocks. Even mediocre teams that managed to do that had the opportunity to win. Good luck to Charlotte. On to next season for us. Basketball and a new football coach here we come.

We can't seem to connect any passes through the midfield. That's what sucks!
