The MSU goalie is having a great game. Kudos to him. I just hope we can pull this one out.I love listening to Frenchy with Simon Spelling.

If he wasn't chasing the points on the first 2-point conversion, we would have been kicking an extra point for the win.

NCAA trying to kill college soccer
UAZipster0305 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
This could also force us to model player development the way the rest of the world does. We are virtually the only country (perhaps canada) that probably plays collegiate soccer. Collegiate soccer IS NOT a medium conducive to the development of world class talent. The entire spectrum of mixing athletics with academics at such high levels is unique throughout the world. -

With i"Coach", I'm happy to get the ball at least once after a coin toss. You can put me in the camp of kicking an extra point and tying it up and trying to win in OT. Momentum is an awesome thing in football.Plus we get a "free" practice out of the OT, good for a young team and an inexperienced coach. Going for two was a lazy way to make dinner time. Interesting take. I don't know of any coach who would consider this as a factor. At this level, all it should come down to is which scenario the coach feels his team has the best chance of winning. Period! -
Not true. ..... So you're telling me you honestly believe that most of the critics on this forum would have praised Ianello for going for a tie if the Zips had lost in OT, and most would not have criticized him for not going for the 2-point conversion?Given the momentum of the game and that we were playing at home AND that we have a reliable kicker (a made PAT didn't used to be a given), in my judgement, the most probable scenario for getting a W would have been to take it to OT. Even if we had won with the 2 point conversion, I would hesitate to say I'd support the same call in the same situation in the future.

NCAA trying to kill college soccer
UAZipster0305 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
The foreign trips for all sports I can understand. However, killing only the spring schedule for soccer is crazy. It only amounts to a handful of games anyhow, so what is the harm? What is the rational behind this?Would the NCAA consider eliminating the football spring games? I highly doubt it. They are a big deal particularly at schools like OSWho.I wonder if the NCAA has a vested interest in permitting the rise of soccer from rivaling basketball and football?...Or in preventing the prominence of "otherwise inferior" schools like Akron where soccer is successful on the national stage from distinguishing themselves?Z.I.P., do you have any insight on this? -

This is precisely why the coach should never "chase" the points early in the game. A 2-point conversion should be limited to specific situations late in the game that the coach has a predefined chart based on point spread (e.g. 2, 5, 8, etc.). -
Another tough tie: 2-2. We had WF on the ropes and couldn't close the game out. The inability to close out a game is this team's weakness. The home unbeaten streak continues though.

This is an exciting game. Great home opponent late in the season.

I'm pumped about this one. Great match-up! Let's see how the guys from NC play in the cold.

2-18 record on aggregate. I'm tired of this "process." -
Second round of conference expansion is beginning.

I don't think the two are connected. Cincy has been very good the past few seasons. Except for getting blown out by Florida in the Sugar Bowl, I can't remember them getting blown out by anyone. Historically, Cincy has been a bad program and will find their way back some time soon.I don't think it's noticed as much in NEO as it would be in SWO. -

Cincy is really in trouble. This is too bad because I feel they are a better fit for the Big 12 than WVU and have a natural rivalry with Louisville. Also, as Cincy's prominence diminishes, OSU's grows. -
God Bless The ProcessI would love for someone with nothing better to do with their time to do the following content study. How many times since taking over the Zips has Coach I or the AD used some form of the word "win" in a public statement? Coaches need to publically talk about their desire to win and what it takes to win. When the "process" is the key element of public discussion, it becomes the theme of the program. Of course we all want the Zips to get better and there needs to be a process to do that, but winning has to be part of the process or everyone is spinning their wheels. Winning needs to be talked about in public and the "process" should be talked about between coaches behind closed doors. When Marshall was in the league, they publically stated they wanted to "win championships", whether MAC or a bowl championship.I like to listen to Brian Kelly after a loss. Everything he talks about is why his team lost and what they need to do to win games. It isn't process or any of that nonsense. It is a discussion on why they lost and what creates losing. He then discusses his faults and his teams faults and what needs to be done to win. No process....winninig.Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly embody everything we want in a head coach. Yes, they had their success in the MAC and moved on, but I can't really blame them. We'd be lucky to have such a problem. These guys made immediate impacts on their schools' W-L record..no kicking players out of the program, no discussion of the process and building for the future, no excuses...because they are good COACHES.

Way to go ladies! Hopefully the poor performance against Miami and the poor luck of losing to UB isn't repeated. We are as good as any team in the MAC if we play to our potential. -

Piss away, MDZip. Welcome to the club. I have spent all day studying in an area of the country where it has already started snowing!I wore shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops out to dinner last night. It's a little cool today so I'll probably replace the t-shirt with a sweatshirt tonight.I knew there was a reason I didn't like you! -

The real problem here is that D-1A football and basketball serve as minor leagues for the NFL and W/NBA. There isn't a lot of money in any of the other olympic NCAA sports. Soccer and hockey aren't popular enough in the US and MLB has it's own minor league system. If D-1A football and basketball were removed from the NCAA and transitioned to minor league professional sports, you'd see a return of the student-athlete and the original intentions and dignity of the NCAA would be restored. But it will never happen.I think the MAC is now officially screwed, but I also believe the NCAA is going to have a lot of logistical problems with this. They just crossed a threshold that was formerly black and white and now introduces every shade of gray and colors. IMO this is analogous to the Catholic church no longer saying life begins at conception but at some random time afterwards. This really is Pandora's box for the NCAA. -

Nah, what did Joe in was that he trusted without verifying, a common mistake across the generations.Another common mistake across the generations is to trust in the belief that everything in the past is inferior to everything in the future or vice versa, again a case of trusting without veryifying....and trusted his nephew assuming blood runs deeper than cash and power. -

Looks like WVU to Big XII. I guess schools with low academic standards like Baylor and Texas will have another friend to play football with.Want to know why teams like Missouri, WVU, etc. are passing on the Big Ten? It has nothing to do with academic standards and the Big Ten passing on them. If it was, Nebraska wouldn't get in. It's because the league is crap and schools want to be part of something bigger, not smaller. Adding Nebraska to the league does nothing more than add an average Big 12 team to the league. Granted, Nebraska is still better than 90% of the Big Ten, but the rest of the league isn't very good.Academics have noting to do with the moves conferences are making. You honestly believe that WVU and Missouri took a "pass" on joining the Big Ten? Wow. They would kill to get an invite.Maybe pass isn't the right word. They looked at better options. Missouri was always rumored to join the Big Ten and they didn't because the SEC is a better league. WVU didn't go crawling on their hands and knees to the Big Ten. Outside of Notre Dame, future Big Ten expansion will be adding garbage to an already bad league. Certainly not a Leader in college football. They aren't the Legends they proclaim to be either. -

Besides the Zips, the Lobos haven't played anyone. Also, NIU is #16! Looks like the MAC may get 2 teams in.It is definitely good for the MAC to get two teams into the Tournament; however, the last thing I want is to see a Zips-NIU match-up in the Regional. We will likely play NIU in the MAC Tournament and a third time would be really lackluster. It's also very hard to beat one team three times in a season. NIU is too good and we are too inconsistent this season for them not to beat us once given three attempts.Part of what gets me excited about the Tournament is that the match-ups are forced in that big name programs such as UNC/Duke/UVA/UConn/Stanford/Cal who would not play us at home are now forced to do so. These are big name schools, which in the public's eye puts us on par with them. NIU is just another directional state school in the MAC to the lay person. -
I am relaxed. I thought my response was pretty balanced. And, I'm still not buying any MAC "building process".Always the bad guy / troublemaker, huh, GP1? +1 to MaxZIP on taking wins however they come.
