  1. Lee, Lee, Lee. Take another happy pill, OK? "all the JCs" is what - two or three? (Deonte Ball unsigned verbal) And one of those has MONSTER HANDS!
  2. You know what? Fox Sports is still using the 'A-in-Motion' as our logo on the team page. How many years...
  3. My sympathy to the Steiners. He coached since Year One at Glenoak. Does anyone remember when Glenwood and Oakwood split? That was a long time ago -- in the 70s I think.
  4. Lee Jackson Field? Is that the (football) pitch you had in mind?
  5. Since the MLS regular season starts the last week of March, you can surmise this game would be vs the Crew reserves --except for one thing. MLS has eliminated the MLS Reserve League competition, and reduced roster sizes from over 30, to something like 24 or 21(?). So I suppose this is how MLS will be getting PT for the subs this season. If it were a pre-season game, there would be a chance of seeeing Evan Bush in a Crew uni, as I expect them to try him out. But by April, who knows.
  6. For the record, the DoD has gone to Force Protection Conditions, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta. Trust me, I'm typing this while in (Exercise) Charlie, hoping I don't get caught!
  7. This is more than a trivia question. It displays the recruiting expertise of Caleb Porter:Which two Akron Zips have brothers playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy?Answer: Blair Gavin and new recruit Zarek Valentin, brothers of Julian Valentin (ex-Wake Forest), and Michael Gavin. I said previously I briefly spoke to Blair's bro at the Pan-Pacific Cup. Only I didn't know who he was at the time! So, Caleb has recruited players whose brothers were all-Americans at Indiana and Wake Forest. Not bad.
  8. First time I've read this. Put me down as one for Zipswin! If we don't have a chance against the Sucknuts, then why are we taking the field? My custom bumper sticker would read, "I'm rooting for the AKRON ZIPS and whoever's playing the Columbus State Suckeyes"
  9. WOW! I bet this would be really nice -- if it worked! But, it doesn't fit on the page (and doesn't even allow horizontal scroll); There are no links to anything except the few stories they allow; The top banners are doubled -- why?I'm sure I will find more problems. And I'm sure this will all be somewhat fixed. But probably not in time for the opening of Infocision Stadium. Put this on your resume, McAthletic Director.
  10. Top Drawer Soccer shows that 2010 college soccer recruiting is under way, and already Coach Porter has a verbal commitment from the captain of the US National Under-17 team, 5-11, 150 lb fullback Perry Kitchen of Indianapolis and the top-rated Chicago Magic FC. Perry has been a member of the US National U-15 and U-17 teams. I think the U-17s are currently in Spain (OK, correct me if I have the wrong country) in training. NOBODY in college soccer will have the back line that Akron puts on the field in the future. As for the Class of 2009? Holy Cow! At this time, no one with the possible exception of UCLA is even in Akron's field of view. The ACC schools so far have small classes showing. Akron has gotten commitments from four of the top twenty-five players on Top Drawer Soccer's Top-100 list, including #9 Scott Caldwell of Braintree, Mass. another US U-17 player, along with Chad Barson of Dayton and Ohio Premier who is ranked #10, and CVCA student and ex-#1 recruit Ben Speas, who fell on the list after his injury took away his senior season of HS soccer. Also, Eric Stevenson of Columbus is ranked #25. He of course also has US international playing experience, as does Zarek Valentin who has been playing for both the U-17 and U-20 USA teams. And to top it off, we have incoming GK David Meves, who is ranked #55 nationally.Coach Caleb Porter is winning the game of Can You Top This.
  11. They're now saying on Gozips.com that Will Fleming (and Joe Pachuca) did not enroll at UA until this current semester, therefore still has five years of eligibility. Can anyone say "Impact True Freshman"?
  12. I think Tonga has 3 to play 2So, you think he'll red shirt this year? I really look forward to Phil da Tonga Terror teaching da haka (or will it be da ha'a?) to the Zips. That should be worth the price of Admission to the Info. Don't stain the new field brown Golden flushes!
  13. Gozips.com has now corrected that Weaver and Tonga(nator) have two years -- not three -- to play for Akron. Thanks for your expertise, UA SID.
  14. To pdt, and 72:First the game was not moved from Lee Jackson because of the grass. It was the poor drainage UNDER the grass that made the field unplayable. I haven't done any research, but I'd bet very few Div I soccer programs employ field turf. A good field turf field can be as good a field as top-flight agronomy grass, but the soccer world still looks down on it. When they go to turf at Camp Nou (FC Barcelona), field turf will have come of age. Our sport takes its cues from FIFA, not NCAA.72, leaving the MAC at this point will make little to no change in Akron's image in collegiate soccer. It will take time to become a household name, no matter what league we are in. Only difference would be (possibly) the impossible jump to Big-10. However, Akron is on the verge of knocking down the door to college football (oh, I mean soccer for those few) supremacy, and that will impact the UA athletic program across the board.
  15. Interesting. Last night when I checked Scout, they had Akron below #110, like in the bottom 5. It is a crap shoot, monster hands or not.
  16. Sorry for reframing the debate, but: Buffalo draws @Vermont (on ESPNU)! The two would have met in the final of the Rainbow Classic here in H'town, if UVM hadn't played their worst game of the year vs Colo State in the semis. UB is a good but far from great team. The same goes for the Catamounts. Prediction: Vermont 71 Buffalo 65.
  17. Thanks for making me feel better, QZ. I posted the previous thread. Hope she finds her way to the right locker room!
  18. I'm afraid to imagine what HIS hands look like.
  19. Not 81-0. The 99 game scoreboard read 35-0 PSU after one quarter however.
  20. In this case, it might be favorable for Akron to face a better team than JMU -- one who like Nevada two years ago would lead to their coming to Akron in the fall of 09, in a 'trap' they may not be aware is awaiting them. IOW -- we might be better off playing a team we have little chance of beating THIS year, in exchange for an opportunity to beat someone nationally ranked or 'name' in the NEXT year (of course to acquire such a foe we need more 'W's for the ESPN selectors). I don't know who that might be though. Any ideas?
  21. Hey Dude. I bought mine before the season. Next time you're in the islands, come on over and I'll model it for ya. Do you prefer boxers or briefs?
  22. Are you talking' bout the same Brett McKnight whose been playin for Akron all this season? I don't think that was the same Brett McKnight, homey! Let's keep this one.
  23. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/extr...grid/index.htmlThat's way longer than the one in the magazine (which doesn't arrive in HI till Friday); And I can't believe Steve isn't tuned into Dizzie Rascal! My answer would be "what's an iPod?".
  24. 230 pounds, and can't beat five seconds for 40 yards? Why did we offer him, exactly?
  25. It felt strange reading this story. I remember watching Benny Dargle -- now coaching with Cleveland Soccer Club -- play for Akron in the 70s, but somehow I had the idea he was older than that (sorry if you're reading this big guy!). Benny was one of the best American fullbacks in the North American Soccer League and also played for Cleveland's last professional soccer team, the Cobras. My best memory of the NASL was the final Soccer Bowl championship. Not sure what year that was (maybe 1982 or 83?), but the Sounders played the New York Cosmos, and Akron's Benny Dargle was assigned to mark whoever was the star of the Cosmos and the NASL at the time. I also can't remember who that forward was -- I think either Giorgio Chinaglia or Franz Beckenbauer -- huge stars of international football before finishing their careers with the Cosmos. It will be fun to watch whether Stevie Zakuani becomes the second Zip to star in the Pacific Northwest.http://soundercentral.com/museum/1982%20up...enny_dargle.htm
