  1. Free admission! Did they announce attendance? What is your guess at the number at Owens Stadium?
  2. Remind me again. How many goals have the Zips allowed this season?? 🀭
  3. The announcer said "Ohio State calling for a penalty", when Akron had the ball in the Buckeyes defensive half! πŸ˜†
  4. Reading the preview of Hawaii's game tomorrow versus the Sam Houston State Bearkats, the Honolulu Star Advertiser writer is gushing and flowing in his praise of Antavious Fish. There are two long paragraphs dedicated to A Fish loaded with stories and clichΓ©s about his strength and his nautical name going back to using couch cushions as a tackling dummy at age-3. It doesn't specify, but I'm guessing he leads TSU in tackles so far. Apparently he was prepared to look to the NFL after 2024, until he learned his season at Coffeyville CC allowed him an extra season as a grad student in NCAA football. Partial text: "In the 3-3 or 4-2 front, Fish is a downhill run-gap filler, perimeter setter or 8-yard blitzer. With upper body strength (23 bench reps of 225 lbs.) Fish is a 'corner-turner' who can circle around a blockers punch."
  5. Story time: Dominick Raiola the QB's dad is a friend. 30+ yrs ago I sat at many U of Hawai'i baseball games with him and his two sons, both of whom went on to play center in the NFL. Dominick played football at the U. in Miami and when he learned I was from Akron he talked all about his former teammate Jay Brophy from Kenmore High. They were very close in college and maintained contact for a while after, when Jay played for the Dolphins. Well, I discovered Brophy in a Facebook discussion a few years ago with another friend who may or may not be here on ZN.org. I started a side talk with Jay, telling him I knew his former U of M teammate, and asking if he had any stories about Dominick Raiola. His only remark back was that because of the number of times he was hit in the head in his playing days, he could not remember ANY of his teammates and has difficulty even remembering anything about his football career without being prompted by his friends and family. This reality about what happens as a result of our National Passtime makes me very reticent to adopt any emotional closeness to the sport.
  6. Missed this game on Labor Day. Zips have won 3 of first 5 and are 3-0 at home! No matches until next Friday when they head to Dayton to play a very strong Flyers team that owns a win over #12 Michigan State. Strong competition on the road (West Virginia and Dayton) and very beatable opponents at the Cub Cadet Field. So, it's hard to tell just how good this team will be when MAC competition starts in two weeks. But, there's real hope we'll exceed the coaches prediction (last place) πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ!
  7. I correct myself. He's a Serbian national. And he looks like the complete package! https://share.google/images/o4D2FLB6mnqtJfiXT
  8. Is he Serbian, or Bosnian? Big difference you know...historically! So don't go calling him "Serb" if he's from Bosnia-Herzegovina! πŸ˜‰ Either way...🀩!!!
  9. Will Viking basketball teams be playing in the "open air stadium"?? 🀭
  10. Hopefully our punter is better than theirs! πŸ™„
  11. Biggest game in about eight years for Joe Akron. Don't blow it...Joe! 😁
  12. Akron number one in the East Region. πŸ˜† Have we been in the East since joining the Big "East"? I'd prefer being compared to B1G "Midwest" schools. But call me #OldSkool!
  13. 5-3 final was perhaps an "ugly win" versus a lesser opponent? Zips were outshot 17-10. 6-2 in Corners. But we scored the last two and held on for the victory.
  14. Shootout at Cub Cadet for the Akron women this afternoon. 5-3 lead over the Screamin' Eagles of Southern Indiana. 8 minutes remaining.
  15. The full women's schedule was released this week (or last, maybe) and is highlighted by visits to South Bend, IN and Ann Arbour, MI to take on Notre Dame (in a meeting of the Bransford sisters from Cincinnati) and Michigan. The home non-conference highlight may be a November 24th meetup with Xavier that could provide the team some confidence as Xavier was drubbed in Big East play and finished in the cellar. https://gozips.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule
  16. Lifetime college athletes. Now hear THIS!! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ https://share.google/GqQAUIAUPQoakn0Wg
  17. Akron loses 3-0 to West Virginia, a team often ranked top-20 (but not currently) which was ranked #1 and lost to USC in the College Cup Final a few years ago. Shot attempts 19-0 WVU ... 😬
  18. Ngongang (sp?) is a 21 y.o. freshman with Canada U-20 national experience.
  19. I'm not buying the "Woe is college soccer" commentary at this point. The game has never been more competitive or probably more exciting. Akron, Marshall, Vermont...National Champions? πŸ† Here's one issue that I didn't know: "Colleges will also be able to give out more athletic scholarships, but in exchange, schools are required to further limit the number of players on each team who are eligible for tuition aid. College soccer teams can now hand out a maximum of 28 scholarships. It remains to be seen how many of those will actually be filled out - or how much money each individual sport will get." ...So, more players, but fewer scholarships?? It was just 9.5 before. What is it NOW? How does that effect recruiting and retention? Does that cause more players to jump to the portal? https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/college-soccer-at-a-crossroads-once-the-primary-pathway-to-the-pros-nil-mls-academies-and-court-rulings-now-threaten-collegiate-game-s-relevance/blt5a83f757fbd2d212
  20. Akron held on to win on the basis of that early score by Fragnoli. 1-0. Not a pretty outcome in the home opener versus a lap dog opponent. We play @West Virginia, a national power this week. Yikes. 😬
  21. Luisa Fragnoli scored first for Akron on a long blast in the fifteenth minute to give the Zips the 1-0 advantage over EIU.
  22. Am I correct that the spread on this game has slipped from an opening 10 pts down to 7.5? I live in a Mountain West city ‐‐ Honolulu, and have some sense about the league. The Cowboys are in the bottom half - to bottom third of a league that is clearly top-heavy. I had Akron winning 6 games this season. To get to that summit they MUST win this one first, and if they aren't able to stay close to Wyo then even 5 wins are in doubt. I like the Zips by a TD.
  23. Full non-conference schedule released. 11/3 James Madison 11/8 Princeton 11/12 Penn St Shenango 11/16 @Purdue 11/21 Iona @Paradise Jam (USVI) 11/22, 11/24 Paradise Jam 11/29 Milwaukee 12/3 Bucknell 12/6 @Tulane 12/13 Murray St (Las Vegas) 12/29 Concord 02/02 MAC-SB Challenge
