Here is a VERY mysterious tweet I noticed recently, from a Texas-based (edit: Philly actually) NPSL club. They told me there was no connection to Darlington, but the coincidence is just too strange...

Keri was a solid assistant here, but IMO the program never capitalized on her ties to the Internationals and Clubs in the area for recruiting. She was only coach her for a few years, 2012 through 2014, under Vernon. Would have liked it if she had a look for the HC job before they hired Noreen...not sure if she did or didn't. She seemed to connect with the women on the team. Different philosophies than the head coach at the time? Dunno. Played with the Terps at Maryland, to boot. Good for her on the new assignment!
I think that, interestingly -- or amazingly, depending on your perspective -- the Akron athletic department has never seen the advantages to making an investment in the women's game. Not anywhere near the extent of the men's program, but just in hiring a 'name' coach. Not to disrespect the current coach, who I don't know at all, but Keri had won multiple national level awards for coaching at youth level. Likely, she was making more $$$ with the Internationals than UA could pay her -- as is the reality in soccer coaching. I was working with Vernon to bring the team to HI, but then he departed... Oh, well. I understand they are only allowed a trip W of the Mississippi every four years! lol

As long as this thread is here...
TDS tweeted this morning that Cleveland Internationals' Director of Women's Coaching Keri Sarver, the former Akron assistant coach (years -- from about 2009-2014??) will be taking over as the new head coach of the US Women's U-19 National Team. That is pretty amazing, and quite surprising. Keri is a Jackson High School grad and former Maryland all-America who played in the WUSA and other pro leagues for several years, and was in USWNT camps, but apparently never capped for the national team.
The tweet from TDS:
Here is Keri's bio from GoZips.com: http://www.gozips.com/sports/wsoc/coaches/KeriSarverBio?view=bio

Charleston (WVA) is a D2 Championship caliber side.
Think of all the trouble Notre Dame (Cleveland) has given us, two years in a row. And any side playing up a division will come with mean attitude and extreme prejudice.
Expect Charleston to be better than Notre Dame. Zips had best come to play; because an ass-whooping is waiting.
You may well be right, fknbuflobo. Remember the eye rolling when Caleb, early in his Akron career spring sked Rio Grande? I think the game(s) was quite close. Hard to tell in an essentially practice or scrimmage situation. Coaches aren't looking at the same things as "fans". In any case, I credit myself for the clarification on the sked. At first they merely wrote "Charleston" on the tweet they sent, and I asked for clarification -- is it the College of Charleston or Charleston Battery? Ends up -- way lower! lol

Re: Another small PG
Come on Folks, we all know...
"Size doesn't matter"Or even better: "Anyone who saw us play last year could see that our guards were too slow on defense; repeatedly allowing penetration which broke down the defense. We need to be quicker at the guard positions". Welcome back to the future, Keith!

I guess that's another possible factor. I didn't realize that they two cities are only about 4 hours apart.
On the other hand, would he have come to Akron if distance was an issue?
Damn! Only time I took a trip like that was from USAF Basic Training (Lackland AFB, TX) to Tech School (Keesler AFB, MS), and it was under 8 hours, with lunch stop in Baton Rouge. And the next day, had to march in a Mardi Gras parade in Charley Spikes' hometown, Bogalusa, LA.
As far as "distance" goes, I think Akron was the nearest site of a D1 scholly for Antino. Seems like he has vastly improved his marketability in 3 years!

Article from Rob Fulford's hiring at Mizzou. I know two of his recruits, Stefan Jankovich and Webster-Chan who both transferred to Hawaii. FWIW, Chan was maybe the best pure shooter I've ever seen in my life! http://www.rockmnation.com/2014/10/6/6896487/rob-fulford-the-new-breed

I just discovered on Gozips.com that there are already two new coaches listed: Kevin Byrne, former Head Coach at Ohio Northern, an Akron native; and (a GA), Allen Deep, just a year out of Indiana U, Pennsylvania. Imagine there will be announcements soon for these, and this will be a place to discuss incoming and prospective coaching staff hires.

Carlton Bragg, did not work out at Kansas so he's transfering out. Groce almost had him at Illinois. We might have a shot with him now.
There's an interesting note: @HighmajorScoop tweeted in response to a 'X' fan that Bragg is a likely mid-low major transfer. Not sure what to say to that. Has his stock sunk that low after a decent 1st year at KU?

Why would he cancel it. Come to Akron, get a trip to Hawaii.
He would cancel it if he is afraid of finishing in 8th place. Shows that there may be some confidence in house.

So we obviously have a good start to our OOC schedule with the solid lineup in the early season tournament. What else do we know about the schedule? Did Dambrot fill it up or will JG get to put his touch on the schedule?
With the change in administrations, there's no way of being sure if the pre-recorded OOC sched will hold. For instance, that tournament -- the DHC just announced that Utah State is dropping out -- and immediately being replaced by Princeton, a significant upgrade.

Well, he'll have to sit a year. Robert Morris has to be happy as is the Williams family.
To my recollection, Josh was a good student. He may get a playing year for his Masters out of this.
FYI, the dad has an Akron JD. So I would have high expectations from the Williams kids!

Interesting: According to our soccer friend Gauchodan from Santa Barbara, on the BigWest Board, Russell Turner is already the coach at New Mexico. I have not seen this independently.

ZIP....you'd be interested to know that this article even states that Loyer was actually considered a Finalist for our job back then.
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1995-03-30/sports/9503300092_1_hipsher-stetson-akron-job
FYI.....Loyer's son is also an early verbal to Michigan State for the 2018 class. Could dad change that and instantly make him our first big-time recruit?
Thanks for that Skip -- I had to check, because I thought Foster Loyer was a UofM Wolverine recruit (Class of 2018). He IS going to be a Spartan Izzo -- and he's a Big Time Player. And he has a brother in 7th grade. Here's a clip of him talking about his upbringing. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/high-school/2017/01/13/foster-loyer-basketball/96521474/ Clarkston HS -- same as the Fife Brothers went to (older bro played with Fab 5)
Interesting article from the Bobinski files too! Coleman always talked about finding his "battleship" in the middle, but could never come close. Team played in Hawai'i in 1991, and their starting center was a 6-7 white kid from Salem, Ohio. What a nice kid -- the opponents all agreed!

Z.I.P., I don't see on that site where it says he's transferring to Houston. I could be missing it, but I only see where they announce Antino is, indeed, transferring; not his destination. (Though UH would make a lot of sense.)
Sorry -- it was a response to that original tweet (Don't you HATE Twitter!?) Hope below works!

Grew up nearby in Galion.
Played at Akron.
Guard on the 1986 OVC Championship and NCAA Tournament team.
Assistant to Huggins at Akron
Longtime assistant to Huggins at Cincinnati.
That's what you have, in a nutshell, previous to all of his NBA work.
I stated this earlier, but I love everything about the idea of him being the next coach......if it wasn't for the long absence from college ball. So, I think we share a similar concern.
I wrote to AD Mike Bobinsky in 1994 (95?) requesting him to give John Loyer -- the candidate most closely associated with the Akron basketball program at the time -- an interview for the head coaching job after the departure of my friend Coleman Crawford. Apparently he was never seriously considered, because a guy named "Hipsher" was so highly recommended by the coach at Indiana, and the UA President IIRC (what was her name?)
was a IU BB season ticket holder. Can someone pull up the oft-repeated vid of Knight talking to our prez on his phone from the podium at a banquet or clinic? lol
Loyer was the Pistons' interim HC for the end of a season, coaching maybe 20-30 NBA games FWIW. He also is the guy who was pushed out by our beloved former coach at Cincinnati after our BFC committed recruiting violations and needed someone to take the fall for him. He's a winner (Loyer) and high character. However, he has not recruited in MANY years, and likely would command a HEFTY salary, given his pro experience.

Wow! I just think that's a weak hire. Little MAC success, B1G failure.

Besides the search firm hire, late night tweets indicate none of the departed coaches will be interviewed. So says the rumor mill.

Three of the four are in the Hall of Fame. Whatever happened to Billy Turner? St Louis Hawks?

I don't know that they're 5x MAC champion. But see what one major champion can do for your image?
The only MAC team national championship trophy is on display on our campus. Remember Dec 10. 2010? Where'd that emoji go???

KD was the only one who coached. I saw Thomas at times talking to players. I have never been, but from I am told, KD was the only one that coached in practice.
Thomas was the one who brought in players. McFadden may be titled the "recruiting coordinator" but putting down visits on a calendar and actually bringing in players is two different things.
This is an interesting issue that you bring up -- practice culture and hierarchy. I have had the opportunity to watch only a couple of Akron practice sessions, here in Hawai'i prior to tournaments. The first occasion was in 2000, I believe, which was the year KD moved from StV/M to be Hipsher's assistant. I sat down at courtside at Blaisdell Arena with my plate lunch just as practice was commencing. I remember how impressed I was that Dambrot was more involved in running players through plays than the head coach was. Then, when the team returned to the U of Hawai'i in 2013 I was at a couple practices, and KD was fully in charge. Other coaches -- and even GAS were on the floor with the players, but Keith was the only one speaking during the drills and play sets. Also, I was on contact with both Brian Walsh and Steve McNees, as that was just a week (actually just 3-4 days) after coach Peters got his cancer diagnosis, and didn't travel with the team. I guess Brian had more experience with the job, and knew what to do, but Steve was really like a puppy and was leaning on Brian for guidance. I really have the most respect for both those young men as they handled the situation very professionally. They shared the job that Dan Peters would have have had. BTW -- I saw just one media person mention Dan's son as a candidate for the opening. Is the son on Ball State's staff?
