  1. "When a team is bad everybody knocks on your door, when you start to get good nobody answers the phone." They might knock on your door when your a bad team, but not to come play you at your house. Think of all the marquee programs in this country (ie Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, Indiana, UConn, Syracuse, Etc.) When was the last time you saw one of those programs come to the JAR? I remember seeing Purdue a few years ago, but I think that was only done as a favor because we helped them out with a scheduling problem. I think it was still a two there and one here deal. There's also the issue of guaranteed money. Once we get to the level of national prominence, we still have to deal with the issue of playing in a small venue that does not generate much money. Right now the only option is to schedule those types of games at Gund Arena. That's what the Rock-N-Roll Shootout does. I think we may have played in that event once or twice. When we start to get good people will be calling us. Their initial offering, like Louisville's this year, will be to come to their house only. If our program ever reaches the level of say Gonzaga, we might then start to see some of those games make it to Akron, but not many in a band box venue such as JAR Arena that holds 6000 fans. Heck, Cleveland State built the Convo and they still can't get many quality opponents because they still suck and so does their attendance.
  2. I'm wondering if the reason they had to schedule these cupcakes at home is because they couldn't get any quality opponents to come here even on a 2 for 1 deal. Maybe the only other alternative would have been to upgrade the quality of opponents at the expense of having very few non conference home games. Unfortunately, I don't expect to see Louisville coming to the JAR anytime soon.
  3. According to my sources, "Close to the fieldhouse" is a good guess. There currently is a parking lot there and also the Phi Sig house. Look for those two things to go away. Also, expect to see a new Greek village with brand new similar looking fraternity homes also adjacent to the new stadium. Right now I can't reveal my sources or comment any further, but this is what I have heard.
  4. This sounds like a talented football player. Does anyone know what his measureables are?
  5. This makes so much more sense. Had they left the game on Wednesday, no one would have showed up due to work and school commitments. The university keeps saying that they want more student envolvement at the football games, but then they schedule games during classes. I agree with the 25K plus figure. I see that as a real possibility now. What's our other option, stay home and watch the Detroit Lions? Yawn.
  6. Interesting read. In the Mid American conference, two schools that come to mind when discussing winning football traditions are Miami and Bowling Green. I believe Akron has been a member of the MAC now since the late 80,s and has not won a single football title. Did they share an East crown once, but lose the tie breaker, or was that in hoops? Good news for us Zips fans is that we have reason to be optimistic and hopeful that JD and KD are the college equivelents of Bobby Cox. Of course if they are, they'll be promoted to BCS size schools before too long. Miami and BG have had that problem, but they somehow always seem to come up with a replacement coach who is just as successful as the guy who left for greener pastures. I guess that goes back to the winning tradition thing again. We need to build a winning tradition here.
  7. This guy is real quick. The story doesn't say anything about his size though. My guess is there must be a catch if he was passed up by the BCS schools. Maybe grades? Discipline problems? SHAWN BAYES LATEST Can't STATE FOOTBALL SIGNEE Tennessee native was former state sprint champ Can't, Ohio -- Wide receiver Shawn Bayes (Memphis, Tenn./Craigmont) has signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to play football at Can't State University, head football coach Doug Martin announced today (May 31). Bayes, a former state sprint champion in Tennessee, is the latest addition to a recruiting class that has centered around speed. “One of our main goals at the beginning of the recruiting class was to add more team speed,†Martin said. “We feel that we have done a good job of that and Shawn is a another fast player who adds depth at the receiver position and can be an impact player because of his great speed.†Bayes earned all-state honorable mention honors as a senior receiver and defensive back when he scored seven touchdowns and intercepted 10 passes. He recorded 15 interceptions and also rushed for 548 yards in his career. In addition, Bayes also was a track and field standout, winning the state championship in the 200-meters as a junior and finished runner-up his senior year.
  8. The Zips don't play Western or Eastern Michigan next year, but they do play Can't at home and Middle Tennesee State on the road. So your right, there are seven very winable games. There are three very touch road games against Purdue, Miami, and Bowling Green and one tough home game against Northern Illinois. I would be happy to see six or seven wins. There's an outside chance at eight if they can win the other home contest against NIU or steal one of the very tough ones on the road (Unlikely, but stranger things have happened).
  9. OSU - The NCAA version of the Baltimore Ravens. Let them keep recruiting thugs. Eventually it will catch up with them. Hopefully by 2007 when we play them.
  10. I voted for #14. That celebration after the Marshall game was something we'll cherish for years to come. I have faith that JD will give us more memories like that one.
  11. How many more yards would Frye have had if Edwards was his target here? Might we have won the MAC last year? One can only dream. If edwards had played here instead of Michigan, and put up the same numbers, he would have been a second or third round draft pick like Frye. It would have cost him some money initially.
  12. Finally a plate with the UA athletic logo. I may consider buying one now. No way was I going to get that one with the University seal. Nothing wrong with the seal. It just wasn't the right thing for a license plate. People following in their cars will now be much more able to relate to the school with the "Roo A' logo on there. Props to Ohio for finally getting it right!
  13. Hopefully that MAC gets that third bowl in Toronto that they have been talking about. With the new rules it is going to be the only way our conference gets at least three teams bowling every year. Maybe an outside shot at a fourth at large, but only if a similar scenario like last year presents itself again. Counting that 1AA win is going to make it very difficult now.
  14. I'd say that's a fairly good overall assessment. I am surprised that they didn't mention Antwon Hight as one of the top recruits. Many sources have listed him as a top recruit for the Zips.
  15. Just checked out the roster on Cleveland Browns.com. Frye is indeed going to wear #9 and Josh Harris is listed as wearing #5. Kyle Richardson has 10 and Derrick Frost has 3. I think it was Kenny Roda on WKNR that interviewd Frye the other day and said that Richardson had #5. My guess is that even if Harris doesn't make the team, Frye will stick with 9 just because that the way he is wired. Based upon what he said during his press conference, he really doesn't care much about what number he wears. He's definitely a throwback. Hopefully the second coming of Unitas.
  16. I heard during an interview with Frye that #5 is currently being held by the Punter.
  17. Does anyone know how fast Arthur is in the 40? If he has good speed, then I have no doubt that JD can turn him into something close to Larry Fitzgerald or Antonio Bryant. Also, I hope that Getsy has quick feet because unless the OL has vastly improved with a bunch of new guys, then he is going to be on his back a lot.
  18. I looked on line for the tailgate option, but could not find it. Could someone help me? I noticed that if you order the family pass (4 general admission tix), it says something about a special tailgate area. is this what they are talking about? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  19. Oh, and by the way Puck Fittsburgh! Their dominance over the Browns is another thing that is going to end. Nothing lasts forever. In the 50's and 60's they were were the Browns bitches. Things always come full circle eventually. Rothlisberger is going to feel some pain!
  20. I am also a Browns season ticket holder and this is the most excited I have been about Browns football since before the original team left for Baltimore. I do have faith in the new regime. Just look at their free agent signings and draft so far. I can't argue with any of the moves that they have made to this point. Have faith Browns fans. #5 is going to play a big part in the ressurection of that franchise.
  21. This is a perfect situation for him. He gets to learn behind Trent Dilfer, a guy who has a super bowl ring and only wins everywhere he has been. The Browns are now loaded at all of the offensive skill positions. At WR they have Braylon Edwards, Andre Davis, Dennis Northcutt, The Kid from Pitt whose name escapes me at the moment (He's probably the #2 receiver). At TE - K2, another potential all pro. At RB - Suggs, Droughns, and Green - All solid backs. They also upgraded their OL in free agency by adding Cosey Coleman and Joe Adruzzi to complement Verba, Tucker, and Faine. This is a much better situation than the one that Tim Couch had. and definitely better than what Alex Smith is going to have. Plus, I think he'll love playing for Romeo Crennel who is loved by his players and does not have an inflated ego like Botch Davis. In two or three years he'll take over for Dilfer and begin his hall of fame carreer.
  22. Here is a link to an NFL network video on Charlie Frye and the NFL Draft. It includes footage from last season, the senior bowl, and the combine. It also includes an interview with #5. Its about four and a half minutes long. I love the NFL Network intro. It really gets you pumped up anout Charlie Frye and Zips football. If you don't have Real Player, you may need to download it in order to view the movie. Here it is. Enjoy! http://play.rbn.com/?url=nfl/nfl/open/nflf...ontextwidth=417
  23. I hope your wrong Racer, but unfortunately If you put a gun to my head I would probably predict it the same way. In order to draw a nice crowd, both or at least one team would have to be playing for something by then. Last year JD, along with Superman worked their magic and kept us competitive throughout the year. I trust that JD will have them working harder than ever this upcoming season.
  24. Check out the fan poll. Right now its running in favor of Charlie Frye at about 39%. It looks like most Browns fans would like to see #5 in the seal brown and orange. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/
  25. OL and WR. QB is talented, but inexperienced. Defense overall looks good, but could be lacking depth on the DL.
