I don't think they've shown the formula necessarily. Not everyone has the size or physicality to pull off their game plan.

WMU also had the mental/effort edge. They took it to us from the get go and put us in too big of a hole to climb out of. Skill wise, we still scored a goal despite being down 2 players and them packing the box.

  2. This is the perfect game at this point in our schedule. It's not too easy where we'll be complacent (at least I hope not), and it's not overly difficult where we won't be able to fine tune the lineup & rotations.

Things I would like to see...

    - Amani Lyles have a nice game down low. With Hunter being somewhat of a threat from beyond the arc, we need another bruiser down low to help Freeman in the paint.

    - Double digits from at least one of Nate Johnson and/or Hankerson.

    - Aggressive drives with more control from Tribble. I don't need him to be a shooter, but I need him to have better control when he takes it to the basket. These "living on a prayer" shots after he gets into the paint are momentum killers.

    - Find at least one more person to enter the rotation to help keep legs fresh. The margin of defeat on Friday was due to fatigue.

I try to reserve my "sky is falling" until about 1/3 into the MAC schedule!

After last year, I think the "sky is falling" card needs to be reserved until we're down by more than 1 possession with 1 second to go in a MAC tournament game.

Anybody who has seen the team in practice - thoughts on Ryan Prather getting time as a freshman? He was pretty highly touted with offers from schools like Wichita State.

Best deal around.  Another area school in the area that specializes in inappropriate pregame videos changes $170 for inferior basketball.

Is that not the going rate for the circus? Their profit margin increases more by not having to use makeup on Pinky.

To provide equality for women, an equal number of athletic scholarships has to be available for both men and women. So, D1 schools that have football have to offer more women's sports teams to make up for the large number of football scholarships. You can't exempt football and provide equality.

Simple solution. Offer women's football too. Eliminate the head-count method and just go sport for sport.

So now you're going to hide behind semantics.  Your hatred for the MAC is duly noted and has been.  The headline simply means they are dropping mens soccer, not "sponsoring it".  The MAC, no matter how badly you hate it, has been trying to provide men's soccer as a Championship since Akron joined in 1993. That season, there were only 6 MAC teams, Akron, WMU, EMU, Miami and BG, and CMU.  CMU dropped out in 1995, and the MAC got Kentucky to make it 6.  NIU joined the MAC in 1997 and there were 7 teams.  1998 saw Marshall and Buffalo join the MAC in soccer.  making it a robust 8 teams.  Miami dropped mens soccer in 1999, EMU dropped mens soccer in 2000.  Marshall left the MAC in 2002, leaving Akron, WMU, BG, Kentucky, NIU and Buffalo.  Marshall rejoined the league in 2003.  Kentucky and Marshall left the league in 2005, and the MAC went out and got IUPFW to make 6.  2007 saw IUPFW leave, and the MAC got Hartwick so they could have the required 6.  In 2009 the MAC added Florida Atlantic for soccer.  West Virginia joined in 2012 and we were back to 8 teams.  Hartwick and Florida Atlantic left in 2014.  2017 saw SIU Edwardsville added.  When WVU left, MAC added 2 schools, they left, and the MAC added Chicago State.  It would have been very easy for the MAC to drop mens soccer many times throughout the years when the team roster dropped near or below the NCAA required level, but they didn't.  You can't force your member schools to carry a sport.

No, my first sentence was in response to the second sentence in your post: A conference doesn't "sponsor" a sport.

The literal verbiage used by the MAC was "sponsor," hence why I used the term "sponsor."

I'm well aware the conference can't force its members to carry a sport. However, this isn't equestrian, field hockey, or other obscure sports like that. This is soccer - the world's sport - in which they have a perennial national contender as a member. They're also close to dropping Track & Field, which they have a perennial national contender as a member. They don't sponsor men's hockey either, which 2-3 of their full time members are national contender in. I don't know how good the swimming & diving is as a conference, and I don't know about any other sports in which their full time members have a program that is a perennial national contender (i.e. OU volleyball). I won't bring up rifle cause that's incredibly obscure (although I'm damn proud that Akron could shoot the nuts off a squirrel at 50m).

Yes, I hate the MAC. You're right, that is well documented. I think it's also pretty well supported by the constant failure by the MAC to grow, become an attractive G5 conference for other schools to be full members, and support its current list of members, especially when it comes to their best sports.

What is a D1 conference without men's soccer and soon to be Track & Field? That's pathetic.

Also, regarding the game, WMU embarrassed us and earned their NCAA tournament appearance. Congrats to them.

The thing that worries me about Hunter: He kills it in practice! That’s a verified fact from Groce and those close to the program. It hasn’t even come close to materializing through 2 games. Not time to panic yet, but he must be better.

Dailey and Trimble were the same way, which is giving me early season PTSD. I talked to someone in the travel party earlier today (same person who told me before he played that Trimble was the best shooter to ever step foot in the JAR), I straight up asked if Hunter was another Maishe Dailey, and this person said that’s it’s a possibility. He absolutely brings it in practice, but has looked completely broken in games. Too early still, but not looking great.

So take this with a grain of salt?

It's not the MACs fault that their member schools don't offer men's soccer. A conference doesn't "sponsor" a sport.  If a school chooses not to fund a program, the MAC can't prop it up by funding being offered.   It has everything to do with Title IX and football budgets.  Look at most major conferences and the mid-majors and well, and you'll see a handful of men's sports, and a plethora of women's sports.

Headline from the MAC's official press release: MAC to Suspend Sponsoring Men’s Soccer Following 2022 Season

The MAC has had West Virginia, FIU, etc., as men's soccer members and failed to keep them. From what I know, the MAC has 3-4 full time members with mainstream sports that contend for national championships every year, and none of these sports are now sponsored by the MAC - Men's Hockey and Men's Soccer. Title IX is an issue, but the culprit for their own problems is the MAC. It is an atrocious DI athletic conference.

this was not a participation trophy game

if the zips won, they would be a top 16 seed

they would not have to play on Thursday

they would get to host a home game on sunday against a team that had to win a game on Thursday game

    this game mattered

Congratulations to Western Michigan.   They came out on fire in the first 5 minutes and made the zips pay....

Charlie Sharp of Western Michigan, Clapier and Shokalook were the 3 all MAC forwards

Charlie Sharp had a monster game...he had an assist and a goal....

Charlie Sharp was the man of the match today

Zips had 11 corner kicks.     They did not put much pressure on WMU on the corner kicks.

My comment was more directed at the fact that WMU found themselves in a MAC Championship game because the MAC cannot properly sponsor soccer.

Maybe we need the Thursday game. We have not looked as sharp as of late.

    The proverbial early season take:

So after yesterday,  looks like EMU, Toledo, and PCCC are the teams to beat.   Zips will be lucky to get a top 4 seed in Cleveland.

Last night was a bad loss that killed our chances at an at large bid.

Doubt anyone will show up for Morgan State game and probably get skunked in Cayman.  Not a great day to be a Zip.

The Bears of Morgan State come into the JAR Tuesday night to face the Zips.

The Bears were predicted to finish 4th in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Poll.  6-4 senior guard Malik Miller was named to All-MEAC second team.  Last year, Miller led  led Morgan State in scoring and rebounding (12.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg).  6-6 grad student David McCullough has been their second leading scorer thus far, averaging 17 ppg.  The Bears also added transfer Khalil Turner, a 6-8 junior who averaged 14.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.9 blocks at Miami Dade College in Florida last season.

The Bears are 1-1 going into today’s game against VCU, having lost to Xavier 96-73 and beaten Penn State Greater Allegheny 130-49.

Do you think they market this to their fans as "Men's Basketball program beat PENN STATE Greater Allegheny 130-49" ?

Indeed, but we significantly out kicked our coverage in landing JoeMo. If he can’t turn around this program, who can?

I’ve posted more in detail about this in other threads, but considering the competiveness in conference play this year,    We are probably about a dozen players away from 6-6 next year, and based on how the staff has recruited this cycle, they know it. Thank God for the transfer portal.

    Is it even that many?

Also, Mike Dawson would’ve been a nice help tonight. Next man up, just gotta find out who that is.

I came back to the thread to post just this.

By the way, with the Akron Soccer news, did anyone notice the court we were playing on? It rhymes with Fig Beast. 😉
