I don't think reducing capacity is necessarily a bad thing if its made up for in other ways. Student population is about half what it was a decade ago and "Joe Akron" doesn't come out to support the Zips like they did during the Dambrot years, though we've put together some of our best teams during Groce's tenure thus far.
Reducing capacity in certain ways is acceptable, you're right. I just don't think simply replacing wooden bleachers with plastic seats/bleachers is an acceptable method of reduction.
Also, are we not going to have seating behind the baskets?

If that rendering is what we'll get, why bother? I don't see any benefit aside from a slightly better sightline without the railing. This most likely reduces capacity (right side upper level would no longer be bleachers) and simply copies any modern high school gym aesthetically.
I hope this is an "under promise, over deliver" situation.

Anybody with recruiting knowledge know if any of these players come with any expectations?
Also, how did we land Greg Beals?

I don't recall this being posted, but this is the first time I've seen it. Will get you pumped for Monday:
Special team. 2019-20 and 2021-22 are my 2 favorite Akron squads of all time. What that team did last year to pull together through all the adversity and not only beat KSUcks by 20(!) in the MAC Title game, but also come within a couple of baskets of knocking off UCLA in the NCAA Tourney - legendary team.
The newcomers this year need to understand what happened last year. The sooner they figure that out, the sooner they buy in, the better off we'll be in the long run.

I watched the end of the Kent - Ball St game. On a 4th down play Schlee scrambled out of the pocket and would have picked up the first down by a good yard or so had just kept running or dived forward. Instead he slid giving himself up about 1/2 yard short of the first down marker therefore handed the ball back to Ball State to run out the clock.
One of the worst displays of situation awareness I've seen in a football game.
Zach Gibson - is that you?

I can confirm that we beat IPFW 2/3 halves that we played.
We were away this weekend but cannot confirm the opponent or outcome yet.
Rumor has it that it will be X-Garvin-GT2-Rique-Sammy with Trendon, Nate Johnson, Amani Lyles coming off bench.
I'll try to find out who we played this weekend and deliver updates.
8 man rotation... Any idea who could step up to make it a 9 or 10 man rotation?
Prather Jr., Mosengo, T Johnson - any of these 3?

Blindside block was BS! Did 13 get a penilty for each word? He may have been out of line, but 2 fouls?
When you're the backup QB on one of the worst football programs in the country, the only thing you should be saying to the opponent is Good Luck.

Count in me in as being a big fan of the MAC as well. Just wish the conference collectively would elevate in football and basketball. Money is obviously a large part of that and a lot of the conference members having enrollment decline doesn’t help. Additionally, I think I read somewhere the B1G’s new TV deal is paying $70mm per team, while I think we are getting something like $500k per team. We need to renegotiate that to at least a few mil a team. Don’t see any reason we shouldn’t be able to do that.
I would’ve really liked to have us add any combination of JMU/Marshall/WKU/MTSU.
These two issues are why I want out of the MAC. The only thing Steinbrecher is ahead of the game on is cancelling a MAC basketball tournament. At least 3 or 4 of the conference members' best sports either aren't supported by the MAC or are dying off in the MAC - Men's Hockey and Men's Soccer. Football and basketball are down, and the gameday atmospheres blow for the most part (doesn't even show well on tv).
More than half the MAC doesn't carry their own weight and there's awful leadership at the top that isn't very open to adding talented schools to create a higher level of competition. Not a recipe for success as the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve and pass the MAC by.
The conference still uses commercials from 10+ years ago that, at best, were shot in 720p.

That goal against Michigan by Perry was unbelievable. Going down 1-0 early in that game was a gut punch, and to even it up prior to the half was HUGE.
Side note: that year (2010), I had my cousin in the family gift exchange. He was a budding Akron fan, and enjoyed their soccer program. I ended up taking a ball to a game and someone on the team was kind enough to take the ball into the locker room and have the entire team (I believe including coaches) sign the ball. Little did anyone know that I'd be giving a signed ball by National Champions that year as a gift. Nagbe, Kitchen, Kofi, Gavin, Caldwell, Mattocks, etc. That is the college soccer equivalent of a signed football from practically any Saban-coached Alabama squad. One of the greatest teams ever to grace the sport.

It is a nice touch, the old bulbs had many burned out and they had some kind of rusty gunk gathered in the bottom. A very rustic look indeed, it was time for a little face-lift.
Inside, allllllllll of the old banners are gone, with some newer ones finally rolling in. It looks like a bit of a mess with the faded carpet walls, but I’m hoping it comes together and think it will look nice once it does. Zips volleyball is home Friday and Saturday if you want to stop in and see the new look, court, etc.
Guthrie has a vision, finally beginning to play out so far beyond the hiring of Moorhead, etc. The new branding and his philosophy on what he wants the place to look like will be quite different from what we’re used to. He’s a bit much for some people and I don’t agree with every thing he does and says, but it’s a nice breath of fresh air to have an AD being proactive and trying to change things that haven’t been working. No matter what happens on the field or in the court, it’s awesome to have a guy in charge that’s involved and wants everything to be better.
I'll beat this like a dead horse, but I full-heartedly believe Guthrie is trying to get us out of the MAC. I think he wants to make Akron an attractive school to root for athletically. Football just needs to win, and that beautiful stadium should start filling up. Basketball has a winner, but needs an improved arena experience for fans. Soccer is soccer - We are Akron. We are Akron. We are Soccer Kings.
Building an athletic department that goes from the MAC to say the American Athletic Conference is the type of resume builder that will land him the AD job at his Alma Mater - Syracuse.

If I get the chance to look up from keeping my head down during the walk to the JAR to block the freezing wind, I'll get to admire these lights through watering eyes.
In all seriousness, that really does look nice. Looking forward to what Guthrie has in store for the interior.

Seems a little odd for a guy to get 2nd team All-MAC when he's never played a conference game and had so-so results and injuries during his time elsewhere. I get he's a highly touted recruit, but I feel like there's got to be someone more deserving based on conference results.
Do you think some donor paid off the legal system to get this guy's charges reduced/dropped for him to be 2nd team All MAC preseason? He's probably calling the commish as we speak, telling him if that poll doesn't change, he's cancelling his season tickets, and that'll leave EMU with 3 total fans.

Until JoeMo gets a roster full of his guys in here and establishes chemistry and culture, we will have to play a near perfect game to have a chance at winning. That's just how it is this year.

Have been hearing a lot about the Cant receiving unit this year. They have 2 guys ranked in the top 50 for rec yards.
Rank # 10 Date Cephas he is a Jr with 44 receptions for 687 yards and 3 TDs.
Rank # 31 Devontez Walker he is a So. with 36 receptions for 544 yards and 5 TDs.
As for us
Shocky is ranked 23 with 42 receptions for 579 and 2 TDs. and George is # 77 with 41 recs. for 441 yrds and 0 Tds
(fyi for wondering minds - Mumpfield is ranked 261 24 recs for 257 yrds and 1 TD. )
There are 2 departures from last year's team that never made sense to me: Mumpfield and Gibson. Unless they were told to leave, how could either look at JoeMo's history/system, and say, "I don't want to be part of that?"
I think both would've thrived under JoeMo but ce la vie.

Football went digital for tickets and basketball is still printing them?
Basketball still has wooden bleachers that destroy the lower back. Keeping it old school with tickets, too.
Regarding this game, this is quite the home/season opener. SDSU is a perennial tourney team with some notable March Madness upsets - EDIT: THIS IS ERRONEOUS ON MY PART. They've only ever come close to upsets, and have 6 first round losses since 2012 (their first NCAA tourney appearance). No idea what to expect from the Zips, but I'm hyped for this game.

So you guys expected a head coach to come in (late in the recruiting/transfer season) and BUILD (not rebuild) a 25-30 FCS player lineup in nine months in the shadow of the B10.
I want this team to win as bad as anyone else, but this isn’t the NFL. JoMo didn’t have high early round draft picks that NFL teams use to make turn around crappy teams in a moment. Or waste like a certain pro team up north.
I do expect a bowl appearance and MACC appearance in a couple years, and upset a program or two that has a $100,000,000.00 budget. In other words an FCS power.
I still think we have the guy to do it. I expected one, maybe two years of gaffs and wrong decisions, then wins. Lots of wins.
I think part of the disappointment in the results stems from the lack of awareness of just how depleted this roster was of FBS talent. Personally, I thought the majority of our issues were coaching under Arth & Co. Turns out, he brought his FCS recruiting with him and depleted this roster worse than Ianello.

How did he slip through the cracks? Incredibly surprised he doesn't have more offers, especially more prominent ones.

Two steps ahead of ya. Tennessee has the talent to overcome miscues; we're not there yet.

I can't believe we lost on a fumble return for TD on a run that would have put us in make-able, even for our kickers, FG range. I knew we were on the way to winning that came. But in the end we lost because our OL is a sieve. Too many sacks and pressures. No holes for the running game. This year we are losing because of poor execution. Last three years we lost because of zero coaching. Execution can, and will be, fixed. Jo knows what he is doing. Trust the process.
