Looking at the roster, the team looks a little thin on depth, especially with Dawson out. Kinda has me concerned now, as I wasn't aware that Dawson was out.

I don't know if we know how deep we are - or aren't - yet.

Guys on scholarship wise - we're deep.

Actual contributors - we'll find out.

Groce ran a 7-8 man rotation at best during our special run late in the season last year. We don't need to be deep to be successful. We need 7-8 guys to buy into Groce Ball.

I'm pretty sure the MAC needs to add a 6th team next year to keep the automatic bid. I think a conference can only have under 6 teams one year and keep the automatic bid. So they'll likely just add a new team who is looking for a soccer conference in order to keep the bid. Like when they added Georgia State and Georgia Southern for one year, last year.

Put me in the camp of "the conference with one of the most respected and successful college soccer programs should not be a revolving door with AQ pending year in and year out, and the member school that is one of the most respected and successful college soccer programs should take their ball and find a new conference that will properly support them."

  3. Congrats on winning the MAC Regular Season, Akron! Your prize is to play one more game against WMU because we're a pathetic conference that, instead of just sending our regular season champion to the NCAA Tournament, we're playing a 1 game playoff.

I didn't even realize they ditched the MAC Tournament, and that this was for the MAC Title Game.

    I. Hate. The. MAC.

  4. PCCC and Detroit Southwest Campus in Kevin Connors' Mid Major Top 10 to start the season.

    7. Kent State Golden Flashes

Let's face it, the end of the 2021-2022 season at Kent State was ugly.

A profane social media post leading to the suspension of four players prior to the MAC championship game -- which ended in a 20-point loss at the hands of Akron -- was not the way anyone drew it up. Coach Rob Senderoff called his player's actions "really, really, really dumb."

Nevermind failing to get up for a game at Southern Utah and losing by 4 in The Basketball Classic. Pinky is leading his clown car full of clowns exactly how you'd expect in Clown Town. Never change, Pinky.

  5. LOVE THIS! FINALLY A MID MAJOR CONFERENCE CHALLENGE!

Here are the Sun Belt members...

    App State

    Arkansas State

    Coastal Carolina

    Georgia Southern

    Georgia State

    James Madison

    Louisiana

    Marshall

    Old Dominion

    South Alabama

    Southern Miss

    Texas State

    Troy

    ULM

While the Sun Belt has a better track record on the gridiron, their growth has also created more appeal on the hardwood. We're all familiar with the Blundering Turds. Georgia State, IIRC, played Gonzaga tough in the Tourney last year. The conference added Old Dominion this year, which used to be a CAA powerhouse (VCU, ODU, George Mason, etc.) before going to CUSA and now the Sun Belt.

The Sun Belt, I believe, has the 2nd largest mid-major conference media contract, behind only the MAC. This was prior to their expansion and additional success in football. The Sun Belt will most likely overtake the MAC during the next media deal negotiations, and should only see an increase in athletic success. This is a good conference challenge for the MAC, as the MAC's top basketball schools should beat the Sun Belt's best basketball schools, but the middle and lower tier schools will be very evenly matched.

Took some time to listen to Groce's interview on 88.1 this morning. He said they have 6 guys who are currently bought in to the "Akron way".  Assume thats X, Freeman, Tribble, Clark, Hankerson, and Hunter. Not that the other guys aren't good teammates/hard workers/talented, just that he needs a few to take the next steps to fill out our 8 man rotation. Something to keep an eye on tonight and as the season progresses. Who will step up?

This is the million dollar question that I think we're all asking. There are so many unknowns with the supporting cast, but I at least feel much more confident in the core of this team going into this year compared to the start of last year.

Last year, I went into the season wanting and needing to see a lot of development from guys that had been here for a couple years. I was most concerned about how Ali, Trimble, Freeman, Dawson, and Bandaogo would take the next step after a few years in the program. Mixed results, I would say. The big thing, of course, was replacing LCJ's production, which was essentially everything.

This year is quite different. While technically losing the leading scorer, we did not lose our most important player. I also feel much better about the structure of the program and the team itself, though I am disappointed and a little worried about losing Dawson coming into the season. We have a lot of fun looking new guys to look forward to. I think Hunter has the potential to be the most impactful. I like having a proven MAC shooter in Hankerson. I'm eager to see how the redshirts from last year perform. And I'd like to see a freshman or two get some time. As far as returners, I feel we know what to expect. Rique will be Rique, X can hopefully put a full season together after a slow start last year and an awesome finish, I'd like to see Clarke go from role player to game-changer, I'm hoping Tribble can develop into a stronger finisher and more of a serious threat on the offensive end.

I love the opponent. This team knows how to win games. And their schedule this year is a gauntlet. On back to back nights early in December, they play at Kent and at Bama! This is one of the better nonconference teams to come to the JAR in a long time, and I'm hoping some of the public has taken notice of both the Akron program and what is has become under Groce, and the quality of opponent coming in.

As far as the game goes, I am not going to get too up or too down based on the result in the W/L column with 35 of these things to go. I think it's a fantastic early season test, as is Friday, but I'm not really concerned about RPI and at-large bids in November. Maybe I should be, but I really couldn't care less. As high as my expectations are for this season, I realize that this is a new team that may not be playing the same slow, low possession style anymore. There are new pieces that may take time to make things work. It was a thrill last year to watch the ups and the downs as the team worked out kinks. Groce & Co. put together a masterpiece that came to fruition in March. I look forward to another fun, long, sometimes sad, usually happy journey to Cleveland.

    GO ZIPS!!!!!!

    - Clarke seemed to find a groove in the MAC Tournament/NCAA Tournament. He had some insanely clutch moments and nice performances. We need that to continue, as X being off the ball helped open up the offense.

    - The Dakotas have treated Akron and the JAR well. NDSU as the Bracket Buster in 2012-13 was awesome (still should never have been a T on Zeke), and now the Jackrabbits coming to Akron after a nice NCAA Tournament appearance last year. Their success is so well documented, I thought they had at least one NCAA Tournament win (they've just come close like Akron). Safe travels for the Jackrabbits, and good luck this season regardless of the result. Thank you for coming to Akron.

    - Groce and March is an underrated love story. What he accomplished with last year's team was nothing short of miraculous.

I don't follow the high school recruits or the transfer portal in any sport, although the scouting reports are exciting.

With Coach Beals, I get the impression he looks at this program as one he can build from the ground up his way, with his type of players. And the transfer portal is a big kick in the butt to build the team quicker and better. Possibly there were too many cooks in the tOSU kitchen, too many contributors to appease, too many "suggestions" from the huge athletics department. His string of conference tournament appearances came to an end and I bet tOSU turned the heat up.

Beals seems like the coach that will get this program into a prominent light. I love it.

Heck I'd buy those shorts in every color. Even stuff with the new logo is extremely limited. But that's a whole other discussion.

I've always been frustrated they don't sell jerseys. My only guess is that Nike probably doesn't think it's worth it to produce replicas for smaller schools? The only Zips jerseys I own are game worn ones I found on eBay.

Oh no... How will they ever recoup the miniscule slave labor costs?

This has always been a pet peeve of mine, too. The only jerseys I own are a game worn Bruce Weinkein jersey and the Zips #1 jersey they gave out at a game during the Treadwell years. Would love to see more Akron gear, especially jerseys. And these jerseys are slick. Love the clean A.
