What else is there to do in Vermont in September? Collect maple syrup? Sing the Sound of Music while they wait for the Von Trapp Family Lodge to open their skiing?

I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Love seeing mid major soccer rise to prominence. This is going to be a good match. Can't wait and Go Zips!

z.i.P.S. Put me down for an emphasis on more promotional items related to soccer. Scarves, bobbleheads, replica 2010 National Championship trophy, etc.

They've matched the 2010 team with six clean sheets out the gate!  We had some truly remarkably talented fullbacks on that team. 'Z' Valentin, Chad Barson and Kofie Sarkodie.  And record-setting GK David Meves in net.  Wow!  Could Mitch Budler be remembered in the same way as Meves?  Dare I ask...Where's the College Cup in December?

Cary (I looked last night out of curiosity myself).

PDF on Buckeye web site shows 2,477

the PDF also shows minutes played...

The Ohio State announcers did not do a very good job of announcing when subs were made.

Tyler Morck and Thomas O' Rourke both played over 50 minutes in the game.

I hope that Matthew Paiva's health is OK.   He has been fantastic this year.  Paiva came out of the game at the midpoint of the first half and only played 36 minutes in the game.

They were too busy trying to run cover for their precious P4 Suckeyes. As the game wore on, the realization that Akron is a more dominant soccer program than Ohio State really became evident in their tone and commentary. It was Louvre worthy.

Poll: Who is the one player everyone is looking forward to seeing the most this year? It can be a new player or an improved player.

Rich Brisco really intrigues me, but if I’m picking only one it’s Eric Mahaffey.

Returning Minutes: Sharron Young - what leap can he take as a Sophomore?

Returning Redshirt: Rich Brisco - does he have the ability and athleticism to go with the 6'8" 240 lbs frame?

Newcomer: Big Stank - how does his game transition to the US?

the most exciting returner is Amani Lyles: he improved so much last season I think he could do it again this off season especially with the 3 pointer.

the most exciting new guy is probably Evan Mahaffey, how does his game translate to mid major play.

The big problem this season is I think we have 12 guys that would play serious minutes at other Mac schools. How in the world is everyone going to stay happy with maybe only playing 15 minutes or less. Groce has a good problem but I still think it is a problem.

    1) Hopefully we remain healthy, but injuries are typically inevitable. The depth we have really protects against the problems last year's team faced when Harris went down early in the season.

    2) If we thought last year's pace was crazy, wait until this year. We're more athletic, more lethal from 3, and bigger. Being 12 deep, we're going to have hockey line changes.

GoZips.com roster is updated w/ Stankovic but I don't think anyone was dropped off.

16 players are listed, which is 1 over the limit.

4 players 6'8" or taller. We had 2 guys at 6'8" last year.

I'm also realizing most of the team wore platform shoes for measurements day. Tavari and Sharron are magically 6' this year.

Past the midway point of the first half, Zips employed a good old fashioned 4-4-2.  This totally took Vikings by surprise.
Remi and Farrell were the two Forwards and they immediately terrorized the CSU back line.  Unfortunately, Farrell soon caught a silly yellow card, and staff removed him (and this formation).

I want Zips to spring this 4-4-2 formation once again.  It probably should never be our base system but it can be a real shock to the opposition.  We should try it again.

What is our base formation out of curiosity?

Part of the issue is that it's challenging to market a sh** product. Nobody wants to watch 3 1/2 hours of bad football regardless of what free giveaways or extra amenities are added.

Minor League baseball isn't much more appealing. Knowing the product isn't elite makes creating a memorable experience all that much more important.

Prior to the Wyoming game, they had the area youth football teams behind the endzone that Wyoming was warming up in. The Wyoming players were high fiving and interacting with the kids the entire warmup. The kids were LOVING it and will remember that for a very long time. Focusing on what's controllable and making memorable experiences for fans - especially kids/families - isn't very difficult. Instead, the University seemingly loves to cater to those already invested in the program(s). There isn't even a family ticket option. I bought a season ticket just to consolidate 4 other games into 5 tickets for Wyoming to make it more affordable for my family (I'm not sure that's a publicly promoted offering, either, but it saved $8 per ticket).

We could make an entire thread of suggestions with ways they can make the games more appealing for people, especially families, regardless of the product on the field. The fact of the matter is, until the suits in charge start thinking outside the box and caring about more than just the donors' experience, Akron will continue to struggle with marketing.

A few years ago, I brought up the Rubber Ducks, who play less than a mile away (a 20 minute walk) from campus.

If you haven’t been to a minor league game, they keep fans entertained. Games, prizes, T shirt launchers, stuff for the kids (get ‘em interested early). There’s games and videos on the Jumbotron when there’s a lull. It’s often silly but in engages fans.

There are simple ways to engage the fans that doesn’t cost a whole lot.

This. Akron being so bad at marketing/fan engagement has never made sense to me. They have one of the top marketing franchises in all of minor league baseball 2 minutes down the road. Figure it out.
