Or, they could combine with the rest of G5 schools and start their own division. They could have more leverage negotiating paydays against P4, a playoff and national championship.
In what world does removing themselves from D1/FBS give them more leverage in paydays against P4?
The only way for G5s to gain leverage against P4s, outside of the NCAA making a rule that P4s have to pay poaching fees for player & coach acquisitions (which is a pipe dream) is to break away from the NCAA entirely and form their own league. Otherwise, you're stuck at the hip to a large extent.

Zips opt in. Huge news! Although I have no idea where the money will be coming from.
All but 10-15 programs in the country operate in the negative. Nobody knows where any of this money is coming from.

Replacing Texas St with LaTech is exactly why the MAC and the Sun Belt need to combine.
Create a North Division and South Division to keep travel school-friendly, and possibly shed some dead weight along the way (directional Michigan's minus Western).

As I understand it ... pairings are supposed to be based on projected NET rankings for the coming year. If that's true, then the schedule-makers expect one team to get a lot better and another to get a lot worse. As for 'name' recognition, I don't believe that figures into the NET rankings. While I certainly hope JMU ranks as a Net 125 team or better by the end of the season, not sure I'd bet on it. I will bet the Zips being NET 125 or better.
These folks better figure out how this game is being played; it's based on NET, not name. Just look down the road. Kent lucked into a NIT bid based on NET, over a MAC team that beat them three times and finished ahead of them in the standings. In a 1-bid league like the MAC, the NET still matters.
James Madison finished 158 in NET under a 1st year HC after their roster was decimated by the Portal. That's pretty damn good. Very valid to believe they will take a pretty sizable leap this year. Arkansas State has a new coach this year, so it's very valid to believe they will take a step backwards. I never said name recognition was a factor in the matchup, just that I'm happy with how this matchup came to fruition. The difference between any of the top 5-6 Sun Belt teams at home isn't that big of a deal because of how NET punishes home opponents. The bigger factor in NET is the road matchup in the Sun Belt Challenge and we have a long ways to go before that becomes a relevant discussion.
Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75.
Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135.
Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240.
Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353.Unless you're playing a team receiving Top 25 votes, you're likely facing a Q3 opponent at best at home. The Sun Belt NET does not matter for this home matchup, so give me the best name recognition possible to hopefully put more butts in seats and open some eyes of the general public with a win vs. a team they've heard of.

Personally, I'd swap Ark. St. and JMU ... plus Marshal and ODU.
I see the argument for keeping JMU, somewhat, but the purpose of the challenge is best vs. best so a home and home rematch with Ark. State, with a chance to avenge that OT loss, is my preference. I'm also guessing, If I'm Miami, a game vs. Marshall would hold a lot more interest for multiple reasons than ODU ... as for UMass, as MAC rookies, who cares what team they draw. ODU should suit them just fine.
This looks like matchups were pulled out of a hat with no real thought at competitive pairings. The only teams with legit NET competitive pairings, in my mind, are S. Alabama-Toledo and Troy-Kent.
Did you know every single team in this challenge has the same NET ranking at this moment for 2025-26?
JMU is one of the biggest mid major brands in college athletics at the moment. This is a very, very nice draw.

Some great match-ups.
JMU/Akron
Troy/PCCC
ODU/Miami OH
Ark St/Ohio
S Alabama/Toledo
Marshall/UMass
These conferences matchup so well. Great annual challenge - one of the few things Commish has done well.

Seems like the better opponent, based on NET, would have been a return game by Ark. State (NET 94). Zips opened at Ark. State last season and lost in OT. Essentially would have been a 'home and home.' Nothing wrong with that. Would have added a little buzz for the opener, IMO.
JMU (NET 158) is not bad, considering Miami drew a dud in NET 293 Old Dominion. So it could have been worse.
But it also could have been much better.
This is the single best matchup for the home game we could have gotten. Joe Akron knows who James Madison is (most likely) and that's more important for the home opponent than NET.

Looks like we have our first Sun Belt matchup in place - James Madison. Nice home game for the schedule.

I don't know if this is the right thread for this, but it deserves eyes. Pretty strong finish by Akron in the Director's Cup. This is based on the finishes of every sport throughout the athletic year.

Texas State to the PAC12. The MAC/Sun Belt Challenge needs to become simply a new conference.

having watched a lot of Pacers this year, I think Rique really fits in with their style. Hopefully he gets a 1 way deal next year, I think he could flourish
They're going to automatically have an open roster spot as well since Haliburton will be out for the year. If he can continue to get stronger down low and further develop his outside jumper, he will definitely be a prime candidate for a legitimate NBA contract.

What is a two way play and why can't they play in the playoffs? Explain it like you were talking to a third grader.
Smart. Keep the explanation just above the average Kent intelligence level.
It's a contract that allows players to be based in the G League, but go up and down throughout the regular season between the NBA and G League. They are in addition to the 15 player roster, which is why they are ineligible for the playoff roster.

6'5" G/F from St. Ignatius. Love seeing the NEO kid stay home.
Much like the Columbus duo, not a whole lot out there about RJ in terms of other offers.

I just wish he was able to participate in this Championship series.
The dumbest rule in the NBA - outside of their apron salary cap crap - is the banishment of two-way players from the playoff rosters. The dude averaged a double double in the G League as a rookie and wasn't able to participate in the NBA playoffs. Dumb.
Nonetheless, the Pacers are 1 win away from securing him a ring.

I saw Terry Weigand in one of the Zips "wacky Wednesday" photos.
I posted a week or two ago asking if anyone had heard any assistant coaching news. I was referring to this, because there was apparently an Assistant Coach job opening post on UA's website, and there were rumors that Weigand is back in the Akron Blue & Gold after taking a year off. No idea if his appearance in the Wacky Wednesday photo is confirmation that he's on the staff or just hanging around the program, but I would love it if he were part of the staff. When I did the kids camps years ago, he was one of my favorite coaches. His demeanor is terrific.

I'm not even opposed to sin taxes. To me this just more so shows where the priorities lie for the state. Instead of investing in improving their education system, which is ranked in the bottom 10 nationally, they're prioritizing paying 18-22 year old kids who can throw or catch a football.
I suppose it's an easy sell to those politicians voter base who care more about sitting in front of a TV watching football than they due about developing well paying industries in their communities.
Ironically, the politicians largely ignored the ability for the athletes to earn external income for decades.
