  1. This is such a good opening game. JMU brings a solid G5 brand into an arena that lacks opponents with solid brands. I really hope UA marketing is getting the word out that this game is just a few weeks away. We need a solid 4k+ crowd.

We match up well with them. We're bigger, but they're going to be a handful athletically. Our guards need to take care of the ball and we need to make our shots. Do that, and we'll be 1-0 with a nice early-season resume building win.

They don't really have any natural rivals of any sort, and they're going to likely get more money (and less travel in the Horizon League) with overall increased attendance (likely no real change in other sports, and no Tuesday games for football).

It just wasn't a dumb decision by any stretch of the imagination.

The Horizon League is basically the TEMU version of the MAC. They avoid potential trips to Buffalo and UMass, but the rest of their time will be spent in Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania - AKA The MAC. We will see how much money they end up making with whatever deal the new Mountain West gets. I highly highly highly doubt it's significantly more than the MAC's next deal at this point, and their travel is going to be insane. That conference is coast to coast with little to no name recognition.

All they had to do was try to be competitive in basketball and they would've had some rivalries. Their negligence was their downfall. My imagination must stretch beyond your comprehension, because it's still a dumb move.

The Mountain West also got raided. Nearly all their top teams are going to the PAC-12. It might still end up being better than the MAC, but I don't think it will be by a significant margin.

They can have, though, fun playing at Hawaii's new stadium at 2am in football and battling with Doug Gottlieb for last place in Horizon League basketball.

What a dumb decision. Good riddance.

Personally, have no clue. But since the recruit is a PG perhaps Medley is the guy. Have to look at their roster to see who really is a PG now.. Sullinger and Bekelp (?) both graduated. Maybe it's the freshman G. from St. Ignatius. Again, don't really know.

Regardless, bummer for the player(s). I hope they take this time during recovery and rehab to also reflect on their poor life decision to commit to Kent State.

Like most recruits, I would take that 6-3 with a grain of salt. As for need, there are rumblings on their board they have had some backcourt injuries that could be season-ending. They may just need bodies. As for eligibility, ask Ali Ali.

Do we know if it's Safford (again) and/or Medley?

I'm not subscribed to the Ohio State Golden Flashes Beacon Journal, but this quote is certainly something from PCCC's press release

"When we came back to campus this fall, we saw a real need for help in the backcourt and were fortunate that through our contacts to find that [heck of a job on the grammar and proof reading, PCCC] Omer was available and wanted to come to the United States for college," said coach Senderoff.

What a vote of confidence that is for the pre-existing backcourt. 22 year old freshman with very limited pro experience. He played in the Israel-Winner League last year:

    Games - 14

    Minutes Per Game - 3.4

    Points Per Game - 0.6

    Total Points Scored - 6

    2P - 1/6 (16.7%)

    3P - 1/6 (16.7%)

6'3" is decent size, but if these stats are supposed to be a big improvement to what they think they already have, ooooooof.

Don't know if Kent will be there for the long haul -- too many freshmen and backcourt is suspect -- but they will be a tough out by the end of the season, no matter what. They really haven't spent much on transfers, although they have a few. Seems they have put more resources into freshmen, a couple with some A-10 type pedigree. The trick will be keeping them - if they are as good as recruitniks say.

I think UMass is the team to watch. More size than any MAC team, which may offset the 3-point shooting from Akron and Miami. Anxious to see what they really look like. Also, while not a contender, hearing a lot of really good things about Central Michigan as a team to keep an eye on. After that, the usual suspects.

Bold strategy given their recent success, or lack thereof, with freshman. They had one quit the team last year before the season started. Can't remember the last standout freshman at PCCC.

Good call on UMass. I don't care about their down years in the A10 recently. They have more money than anyone in the MAC, a better coach than anyone in the MAC not named John Groce and maybe Travis Steele, and the MAC is a significant step down from the A10 after the first few teams.

Great PK save by Mitch Budler...late in the 2nd half.

The through ball by the Cornell player was one of the prettiest passes I've ever seen in a soccer match. Chest-high bullet volley that split the Akron defenders to give the Cornell attacker the advantage.

What a save by Mitch to prevent that from being the highlight of the year for Cornell.

I've only lived in two states, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Naturally I have grown to DESPISE both OSU and PSU. Probably more excited about Penn State losing to both Oregon and UCLA, than I am about the Zips win today.

All these cocky and arrogant people who have never attended those schools are insufferable. I always say I'd rather watch Akron lose every single game than be a bandwagon fan of a school I have no connection to.

This is how it should be. Hopefully the football team can keep this going. A competitive football season into a NCAA tourney run for soccer, into one of the most anticipated Zips basketball seasons could really be the momentum athletically the University needs to get back on track.

  10.

In the world of NIL, we should be asking recruits to rank the top 5 players of all time at their position. Any type of reward for this level of stupidity should be punished similarly to Akron's academic postseason bowl ban.

Who knows how he is as a student, but he is certainly not a student of the game. 😂

Massive match tonight. I will have the guards on in one ear bud but hopefully that doesnt affect attendance too much! Weather should clear up

No offense to Zips soccer, but I hope anyone interested in the Guardians is at that game instead. My kids and I are going to the Guardians game - gotta let Skubal know he's well loved in Cleveland. We're actually sitting near where Lane Thomas hit the grand slam.

Weather should be great, though, and the student turnout needs to be good tonight. Every match is big when you have a championship-caliber team. Right the ship tonight and let's get back on track. Go Zips (and Guardians)!

I am looking at tickets for this season. I was thinking of buying 1 season ticket and splitting it so that I'd have tickets 2 to half the games as me and the soon to be Mrs. will only be able to attend select games.

I've heard some on here say that option exists, but I don't see it advertised anywhere. How does it work and are there any restrictions? Like will I be able to get extra ticket(s) for the Kent game or is that game restricted?

This is the way and @Zips1991 is spot on. It's the best kept secret in Akron athletics, although it looks like more and more people are utilizing this trick.

I bought a season ticket for football solely so I could move all but 1 game to the Wyoming game. It ended up being quite a bit cheaper for my family to attend the Wyoming game, and I still have a ticket to the Kent game, plus the parking pass.

I also did the same for basketball this year, but haven't figured out which games I want to attend. With 3 kids (6, 3, and 5 months), it's the most convenient way to attend Akron sporting events.

You can email Matt or call the ticket office and they've been very good about making any changes in a timely manner.

    Early congratulations on the marriage!

I still think that donor money would be better spent on NIL. Donors only have a finite amount of money they're willing to give. $1 million in additional NIL could greatly revamp our offensive and defensive lines. Probably make both units at or near the top of the MAC.

Not trying to stir the pot at all, but why would anyone think that getting rid of joe is going to solve anything?

The issue with JoeMo goes beyond the X's and O's. He's a poor leader of men, doesn't adapt, and seemingly has zero issue using excuses as a crutch. NIL won't help with the intangibles he lacks as a head coach. @catdaddyp has broken down the talent on this roster that JoeMo consistently underachieves with. We need a coach to say to Hell with the BS, we're going to win some damn football games. Someone has to possess this type of attitude that's required to hold those above him and around him accountable, and turn around this program.

You spend others money so easily.

That's an absurd statement. The University of Akron is a public higher education institution that literally does nothing but spend others' money, and they do it poorly. I was merely pointing out the importance of a donor stepping up and funding the termination of JoeMo so the program can move forward, just like we've seen at a number of other schools. It would be awesome if the football program could find their Bud Wentz, someone who is so passionate about the Zips that he does whatever it takes and is creative in boosting the football program.

I haven't read the finer details of Joe's contract, but it appears his base salary is $620K and he still has two years left on his contract. That's 1.24 million in total. The buyout language in his contract says we would owe him 75% of that total. That would amount to $930K.

I can't see how Akron could financially afford to pay that when we couldn't even afford a training table that costs $3k-$5k. Furthermore, it's not like we have Nick Saban waiting on the sidelines wanting this job. The Akron job is among the bottom 5 jobs in all of FBS as we have poor funding and little to no NIL in a day and age where money means more than it ever did.

Hell, if the University just gave Moorhead $465k in NIL each of the next 2 years (amounts to what his buyout would be), Akron would probably be in a better position competitively than paying that to him to not coach. The reality is whatever coach we bring in is setup to fail and in 2 or 3 years we will be asking to pay his $1 million buyout as well. At some point this chain needs to be broken.

To clarify, I'm by no means trying to defend Moorhead. I just realize Akron has much deeper problems and trying to slap a bandaid on it by bringing in a new coach is simply not going to work. If they want to compete they need to better engage the community and in particular wealthy alumni and local businesses. These are 18-23 year old kids who are now hired mercenaries. They will go to the highest bidder and frankly we can't compete financially without external help.

Joe's firing needs to be on the donors. Kaulig or someone needs to step up and fund the buyout.

  15. It is so fitting that Akron and the Cleveland Browns are partners. Last Sunday, the Browns held the Bengals to 7 yds of total offense in the second half and lost. Last night, the Zips held UAB to 0 second half points and lost.

When there's no mental pressure on Finley, he's a fine MAC QB. The moment any weight gets put on his shoulders, he folds like a very cheap lawn chair. He brought the Zips back from the dead in that game, but once it got within a score, he panicked in the pocket, missed his reads, etc.

Someone on the Zips fan Facebook group stated they were at the game and heard tons of chaos on the Zips sideline. JoeMo was yelling at people and there was tons of confusion with play calls.

JoeMo has to go. Let the interim coach get his feet wet vs. Duquesne. This program needs a glimmer of hope and that can only be accomplished with a HC search. UAB and Wyoming were the cornerstone pieces of a successful season this year. Two pathetic G5 programs with semi-decent name recognition, and we flopped vs. both. Bye Joe.
