  1. You got chewed out on this board? Why doesn't that surprise me?
    Ha. Sometimes I deserve it.
I think it's a perspective illusion thing. I think there is probably a lot more distance backwards from the bowl to the press box than what appears, and despite how it appears, there will end up being plenty of room for the stands to be just as large as the east side. It'll be interesting.
Indeed, it will be really interesting to see how this pans out. Would anyone be against having the west and east stands equal in capacity?
    I would.
I think the eastside upper deck is larger then the westside upper deck due to the pressbox. It's not a depth preception on the camera. It's looking at the supports on the pressbox side vs the east side. Look at the shot below. You'll notice there more supports on the east side Vs where the upperdeck will hit the pressbox. I believe it was by design to have the eastside upper deck larger.DIZBABSXZFHGMKP.20080925154737.jpg
Actually, as I look at the photo you provided (thanx) it appears to me that there is nearly the same distance from the bowl to the back of the stands (or the pressbox on the otherside). Yes, there are fewer supports on the west side, but that could be due to the pressbox structure anchoring the load at the back of the stands.[edit-add]I was wrong... you were right (those who were saying the west side looks to be smaller).I just pulled up some plans.EASTBowl: 21 rows / 4065 seatsStands: 38 rows / 8699 seatsWESTBowl: 21 rows / 4065 seatsStands: 29 rows / 6518 easts

  2. I know what you guys are talking about. I questioned that myself a couple times, and then questioned it again after they started putting up those angled beams a few days ago.I think it's a perspective illusion thing. I think there is probably a lot more distance backwards from the bowl to the press box than what appears, and despite how it appears, there will end up being plenty of room for the stands to be just as large as the east side. It'll be interesting.

  3. well, like you will give the "liberals" time to evolve into conservatives, I will give you "conservatives" time to figure out that "conservative" doesn't mean what they claim it does.Don't count me in with you guys. I once bought into the "conservative" mythos, particularly in the mid-90s when they actually tried to get a balanced budget amendment passed.Personally, I think it's all talk. Most "conservative" talking-heads only pay lip service to the ideals of less intrusive government, and go right on to pandering to the big elephantLibertarians > Conservatives > Liberal socialists

  4. Until UA gets a journalism school, I will never expect a high quality student newspaper here. Sometimes they surprise me and have a good edition, but usually it comes off as the product of a couple of kids with a newspaper hobby.
I am probably saying something that will be considered ignorant by some, but I doubt you need to go to journalism school to be a good writer. That only takes talent. You go to journalism school to learn the ins and outs of the media business, to get indoctrinated into the establishment way of doing things, and to learn how to produce work that sells.Good writing is good writing.
  5. I think the main point here is that regardless of star rating, Akron isn't seriously competing with any large BCS schools for individual recruits. Those schools are all fighting for the same kids, and in some part because of that, they get rated more highly. You don't see USC and OSU battling over a 1-2* recruit.
I think the main point here (which got lost) is not about the effect of ratings, recruiting, and success, but instead about how likely it is a recruit can be under-rated.... OR, fit into one program better than other one.The off-tangent started with the point that in general you can correlate a statistical accumulative affect of ratings to the overall level of the program, which is probably quite true... but I don't think that refutes the validity to the idea that an individual recruit can turn out to be much better than a rating.... no?
  6. loldoesn't that kinda make a joke out of Can't State anyway?I mean, if they are trying to reach higher and improve themselves by poaching UA students? If I was the buchtelite I'd take their money too.
he's got a point. I see it as more as flattery than a slap to the face. If Can't wants to give us money so they can try to pull some students from us, so be it. It's not like we're losing on this deal. As someone photoshopped in another thread... Instead of can't using their slogan "Excellence in Action", it really should be "Excellence in Akron"...
That wasn't photoshopped, was it?I followed the link to the Can't State site and it actually said that on their page!Or did I get duped and followed a bad link? :o (atleast I didn't get rick rolled)
  7. yeah, maybe this should be locked or merged with the other thread...but yeah, even if they get behind and don't have finishing touches on the press-box interior areas, they will have all the structure and systems in place to hold a game. no problem

  8. We got bleachers!
wait, are you talking about that stuff laying down on the lower west bowl? I'm not sure those are seats.
Just what do you think they are? They already were installing the supports for seats and why would they lay anything else in that area?I'm betting those are the first of the lower level bleachers.
It just looks to me like they have layed beams down there. Some of them are too long and others are too short to actually seem as thought they belong down there.
  9. There's a veritable convoy of trucks on the stadium floor today. Looks like they are delivering more of the precast concrete pieces.
veritable convoy? I'm disappointed! I wanted a veritable cornucopia of trucks. well atleast these guys can get on their CBs and bust a few police blockades.... CONVOOOYYYY!!!
  10. Well i'm sure he wont get into anymore trouble considering pot is legal on kents campus right?
I know you were just kidding but let's be honest here. Pot is widely used throughout UA's campus. As are other drugs. It's college. I've never been to Can't's campus so I wouldn't know the atmosphere there, but I'm willing to bet they use as much or less pot then students at UA. I know it's been a running joke(Can't is a hippie school etc) but I can't lie, I've never seen someone do as much acid as this kid a few doors down from me. Does that make Akron a bunch of hippies too?Just putting a long running joke into perspective.

  11. Woah..I just checked out the website...I am also looking for rooms off campus next year. These prices aren't too bad compared to other places. This is actually cheaper than what I heard people were paying at Fir Hill! This definetly deserves a closer look! Thanks everyone for the info!
No, I don't think you guys are understanding the pricing when you say the prices aren't too bad. The 599.00 a month for the 4 bedroom apartment is PER PERSON, because these types of places give out individual leases per bedroom. That's why the smaller the apartment is in terms of bedroom and how many roommates you'll have, the higher the price goes. 650 for 3 bedroom, 699 for two bedroom, etc. If you guys think that's reasonable, you must be richer college students than I was!
Yeah, I realized that about a few hours after I posted that. Because of the twelve month lease, it ends up being more expensive than living on campus! I'd be surprised to see this place get many leases.
If the accommodations are nicer, then it could carve out a nitch. However, I think you might be right. Why would you spend more money only to be farther away from your classes? If you want to be that far away from campus, you can always rent rooms off campus and spend a LOT less
  12. 24-team playoff, 11 automatic berths for conference champion, 13 at-large.That's my vote.
Yeah, I think it needs at least 24 teams.I always hear about 8 or maybe 16, but playoffs like that doesn't solve the problem of giving a shot to the undefeated outside teams and you end up with the same situation as before with the same lot of teams getting their straws picked at the end of the year.
  13. must be a slow news cycleThere are only a couple of things that need to happen here:1) The trustee should be investigated to see whether he simply gave inside info to his son and his son took it u pon himself to seek the property, or if the trustee actively suggested or conspired with the son. There's a difference... though I doubt the trustee did anything and it would probably be hard to find evidence even if he did, but it is something that should get cleared up.2 ) The actual sales transactions of the home does not need to be reversed, but some compensation should be required.... a ) from the trustee's son to the university ... for most of the profit that he took b ) from the trustee's son to the original owner... not for much but a punitive/compensatory act (purchasing a property with prior knowledge that it was worth more... some people wont like this, but I think it's different when you have specific insider info)But I don't think this whole thing is a big deal.As soon as I heard that the stadium was going to go there (that was well over 2 years ago now, wasn't it?) I took a quick look around to see what properties were up for sale in the area. Not that I wanted to sell anything to the university... I was actually looking to see what properties would have their values increased because of the changes. It's called prospecting. It happens a lot in real estate. It's not unethical unless you have insider info. When I got it, it wasn't legally insider, because I didn't talk to anyone who had specific knowledge that wasn't public. The trustee's son did. That's the only problem. It's not the end of the world, but it is wrong.

  14. I went to the Car Care Bowl yesterday. BTW, it was one of the best college football games I have ever sat through in person.Anyhow, here is an idea for tickets for next year. The ticket I had yesterday was shaped like a helmet and was pretty cool. Certainly it was something I have never seen before. UofA should look into that next year.
Okay, great idea. And it inevitably brings up the question: What should Can't State's tickets be shaped like? :P
