  1. Well this countdown thing couldn't last forever. We're #91!!! We're #91!!! We're #91!!! We're #91!!!

    Link

On another note, The Sporting News predicts in their pre-season magazine that Nicely will be the "next big quarterback" from the MAC and he will eventually have an NFL career. In spite of this, I believe they pick the Zips 6th in the MAC East.

Your link doesn't seem to exist.

Hmmm you're correct. They must have taken it down temporarily because I read the full article earlier. They mention all of the expected (scheme switch, QB named in August, Lemon ordeal, Ianello's recruiting reputation) and some it up by saying we should expect some "rookie" HC mistakes in this year of transition. If you Google "JD Brookhart" and look at the "News" options only, the Orlando Sentinel story picking the Zips at #91 will be first in the list of three. I'll bet they'll have it back up tomorrow.

    Here is a new link.

I particularly like the video "discussing #s 91-100. However, it's incorrectly titled. It should be "Discussing #93, the Maryland Terps."

  2. Like it or not, LeBron brings more national and international attention to Akron than any other individual in the sports world.

Now, you can say that sports in general should not be that big a deal in the overall scheme of global priorities. But if you follow that route, then why waste time on a sports forum like ZN.O?

For those who do believe that sports can be a positive force in the world, I just don't understand why anyone in the Akron area would not be interested in doing something to try to convince LeBron how much it matters to people in his hometown to keep him in the area year-round. But maybe someone has a good argument for why it would benefit the area if LeBron moved permanently to one of the coasts, and sports fans around the world could go back to ignoring Akron.

Or maybe some here think something should be done to try to demonstrate to LeBron how much his hometown appreciates him and wants him to stay, but just disagree that this is the right way to go about doing it. If so, I'd be interested in seeing some positive alternatives to this event at Infocision.

My initial take on this is that it's the right thing to do, and the right place to do it. Sure, some sports fans around the country will mock the event, but mainly because they want LeBron to ditch Akron, move to their part of the country and play for their favorite NBA team.

Right on. I also don't understand why it would be bad for (potentially) 20k+ getting a glimpse of our D-1 diamond that would otherwise not enter the doors. A lot of folks don't even understand that we ARE D-1. This could open up a lot of eyes as well.

  3. Well, I haven't posted in a while but I thought I'd chime up on this one. I'm THOROUGHLY disgusted by this decision. Do I see the logic in it? Sure, who doesn't? But what a kick in the junk from the administration to some of the biggest fans of the school and of athletics. If anything, you divide that lot and make separate entrances maintaining a portion for those of us who can't afford to donate major monetary amounts but do support the school in other ways such as ticket and merchandise purchases and general exposure from such things. My UA flag flies year round outside me house, and yep I'm outnumbered by the Suckeye flags even in my North Akron neighborhood. Tom, get on the ball and make an adjustment and quit trying to take advantage of your most ardent supporters when there's plenty of room for those donors all around the stadium in "less visible" areas(read: you won't see the empty spots when they abandon the team when it gets cold and/or does poorly).

  4. You must all be joking, especially cornbread. There are no players who are more important than the team. I saw Devoe play too and was not particularly impressed. If he has decided that he doesn't want to be a part of the team going forward, good for him and good for the team. JD had a great knack at bringing in players who simply did not pan out and there is no reason to take the side of any of them over the new coaching staff. People who try to undermine new staff, as they are just beginning to build their program, are simply cancers. For cornbread, are you, presumably as a grown man, going to take the side of a few young kids over the grown men of good reputation who were hired to mold this team?

These players are essentially still kids and need to get with the program or go away. Devoe will move along to another school. Good for him, good for us and good for the program.

Until I see how this team performs on the field I will support Ianello and his staff 1000 times over any individual player or small group of players. I simply don't care what a young 18 or 19 year old kid thinks about the coaches. To each of these pampered athletes I say take your scholarship and work your ass off. Play the way you're expected to play and work within the system, or get the hell out. When you become a star and help to define a winning , entertaining program, we'll talk. Until then you simply aren't important individually.

Right on. Coach Ianello said recently that he'll staying away from tape to discern his opinions on current players. These guys will have to show on the practice field where they should be on the depth chart. If they really want it, it should show on the field and then on the depth charts. Work hard, prove you deserve it, and you'll keep your place. Think you're entitled to that spot and don't show the effort? Ride the pine or take a trip to 1AA. GO ZIPS!

  5. Egner's shooting was a bit off in the first quarter, but how about those two blocks? The first one on the 6-9 Xavier recruit was good. But that second block near the end of the quarter was about as athletic as anything I've seen in the NCAA tournament.

Keep the observations/score updates going for those of us not near a TV. Thanks!

  6. Wow. Sort this by "Margin" and the Zips are 3rd from the bottom...not good.

The "margin" heading is useless. How many schools are there that are hemorrhaging money but report their student fees as revenue to they break even? Akron doesn't do that, and so it makes us look much worse than we are.

Wait, so you think that all the other schools are fibbing to make their basketball margins better but Akron is the only "honest" school out there and therefore looks worse? Man...and I thought I wore Zips-colored glasses... B)

  7. CNN list of revenues and expenses across all D-I basketball teams.

It reports that Akron basketball brought in a total of $424,875, but had expenses of $1,603,402 for a net loss of $1,178,527.

I'm not sure how accurate this thing is, though, because too many schools posted a net of $0 where expenses exactly equaled revenue. Each school reports their expenses a different way, so there's no real way to gauge this. For comparison, Duke lost more money than any other school.

The only real valid comparison among the schools is in the expenses column, since revenue can be easily fudged via institutional support. A school can simply throw a bunch of general budget money at the program and call it "revenue" to even things up if they're in the red.

Here are the expenses for the MAC basketball schools. This is a good way to see how much each school cares about basketball:

    Toledo: 1,934,500

    Ohio: 1,787,577

    Akron: 1,603,402

    Ball State: 1,514,612

    WMU: 1,496,071

    Can't State: 1,420,842

    Miami: 1,343,259

    EMU: 1,271,105

    CMU: 1,270,715

    Buffalo: 1,207,151

    BGSU: 978,966

Wow. Sort this by "Margin" and the Zips are 3rd from the bottom...not good.

  8. I, for one, appreciate all the hard work and money the mods spend to keep the site running. Never really had a beef with them on either side of the censorship coin.

+1 also. I've had the pleasure of meeting CK and ZW on a couple occasions, and they're great guys that share a passion for our Zips with a lot of us that frequent the Nation daily (multiple times  ). Anyways, we have the best set up on the web of any team in the MAC, and better than some of the Big 6. Myself just being around active on the site for just over 3 years, I've seen it grow exponentially. I was member 374 back in February of 06, and I'm sure we're pushing 10k now (maybe the mods can clear up a ballpark registered user number?). That's a big jump. I'm not sure how long ZN was around before '06, but still. We're proud, growing, and as fans, Zipsnation is actually a very big part of it. Heck, we've gotten pub in the PD and the ABJ! :D

  9. McNees has taken a lot of crap on these forums, but he is still one of the most exciting players on this team. You never know when he is going to get hot from beyond the arc, but you sure know that when it happens you don't want to miss it.
Right on. You know, I said to my friend in the stands that after the after the game Steve had vs K-SU-C-K-S that he was going to go off for 6 3s vs EMU. Even though he only hit 4, I said I'm still right because that last one was worth as much as 10 3s.
  10. You know after our loss to Can't last week I had to walk in front of their small crowd at listen to them talk so much crap to all of us. I would LOVE to see those idiots right now! I bet they were making fun of us because we went to OT with EMU, but hey at least we won...
Of course Zips fans are glad K.e.n.t was upset, how else do you think Akron is going to win the tournament? You won it last year and you'll probably win it this year but you'll never get it going through us.I was in that section talking all that trash, I'd probably do it again. We'll enjoy the NIT...just remember, only one of us knows for certain our team is going to a post season bracket at this point. ;) Let's Go F.lashes, 2-0 this season and regular season :champs:
Well, a win tomorrow would get us a trip to our 4th straight championship game. Now granted, we've only won 1 of the 3, but I'm pretty sure a couple years back we made our way to the championship through you. Thanks for stopping by!
  11. I'm the slap dick, thanks for the new moniker. I think that I'll use it myself.I never said that you are moron by the way, just said that saying Can't is not a good team is a moronic statement. I am sure that you fine guy. Yes,I do watch every game from the third row so I get a pretty good view. Can't State is a good team and was a very good team last night.Have a wonderful weekend ! :)
It was nothing personal. Where I'm from you disagree with a guy you call him and his mama every name in the book, and an hour later your best friends again. I'm sure you're a fine fellow yourself when you aren't blinding yourself to the reality of what a good college basketball team means outside of our pathetic conference this year.Do not be surprised to see Can't bounced by 20+ in th first round of the NCAA's. You heard it here first.
I will buy you a cold one if Can't State gets bounced in the first round by 20 provided that they don't play a top ten team. If that so happens to play out just PM me and I'll meet you at the pub of your choice. You have nothing to lose.
When did K-ent get awarded the MAC Tournament Championship?
