  1. Although I hate to admit it, you were right. It is wonderful.
  2. He's right on both counts...but it seems, equins, that you use our forum to build up YSU (once again, a great school and great football program) to pass off "compliments" to make us look bad and build your school up. if you really want to do that, go do it with the hundreds of other YSU fans on your own forum-Oh yeah, there aren't any. We have fans from Toledo, Can't, and other Schools that post here and although they trash talk, they still don't down our school as much as you try to.
  3. Integrity isn't the issue here...remember, that's how the stadium was paid for...through donations by these companies. And since our Almni don't have deep pockets or sheer numerical alumni sizes like OSU, Ou, or Miami, this is how it had to be done.I could very easily see the plaza being named after an late official/benefactor however- (not Gardner...the theater in the Union is named after him)
  4. That has already been taken care of...look to the highest bidder...which IIRC, is either First Energy, Summa, or Infocision.
  5. I almost forgot NIU!! Thanks! EMU, I don't know a lot about their situation, but NIU's convo center was built too big and is located in rural/suburban Dekalb county- there's not a strong population base. It also is not used very frequently due to the location and proximity of other venues within close range. All I'm saying is, UA can/will be able to bring seats due to the better-as-of-recent-years record, and a strong population base. 19-21K avg. in the first year? Likely.50K? Not until we have some better records and a stronger fan base, which this new stadium will help bring. Give it time.
  6. I'm not arguing with you at all! :-) I just want you to try and understand that a good reason that attendace has been so low are the reasons I and others have stated, and a new stadium will help bring in more people. And that's the bottom line! JK.
  7. The team's record as of late has been much better- even last year's dissapointing season was better than when I was growing up in the 80's/90's. You seem to keep ignoring the one thing that many of us are saying- PEOPLE DON'T COME TO THE RUBBER BOWL BECAUSE OF IT'S LOCATION. With a more centralized location in a better facility, people WILL come. Especially with 7-11K living within walking distance. Look at what new facilities did for the Aeros and Cavs, for one. Name a new facility built in the last few years where this has happened.
  8. 30-35K is better. 50K is overreaching, at least for now.Our football attendance sucks for the following reasons-1. The overall decrepitness of our stadium2. Distance off campus3. Location in a sparsly populated part of Summit county. 4. Not on any main drags5. hard to get to.6. A lack of community visibility because of all these reasons and a piss-poor record (until 2002 or so)Our metro population is 700,000. Our city population is 210,000. Our student population is 23,000. 2,000+ live on campus and another 7-10K live within walking distance. The stadium will be visible off Route 8, and is on a major throughfare, and is ON CAMPUS. This new stadium will bring 30-35,000 easy.It also looks like it could be expanded later, which would make a lot more sense.
  9. Comparing Youngstown and Akron is like comparing apples and oranges. Y-town has its own TV market which can focus on its area. Akron has one paper, and a tv news operation that's only been on the air since 2002 or so, and now is only on cable. Because we share with cleveland in one of the largest TV markets in the US, Cleveland sports will always come first because they make up the majority of the market share. Not only that, people in Akron for some reason refuse to view it as more than a "commuter school" (and sadly, many of our students..STILL) and feel that Akron's wasting it's time trying to "aspire" to something better. Case in point? Look at some of the backlash in the papers about UA buying the Quaker. It's ridiculous. It's probably not going to happen to the degree that we overtake billing on those guys. If akron had it's own market (and was thought to be starting one in the 60s) it probably would have changed the coverage/visibility/tradition. At least not yet. The winning is part of it, but a lot of it is community perception. And both of these things will change, but they will TAKE TIME. YSU, I will admit does have some really nice things going for it. It is the brightest spot in town (Chevy Centre withstanding) and they do a lot of things well, have great community support, and is a good school and they don't deserve as much bashing as we give them. Are they better than Akron? Never. Akron hasn't begun to show it's greatness yet. The best is yet to come people.
  10. Yep. A hotel is not doing well if one of two things happens...A. They get soldor B. The flag is pulled. (Flag=chain name)The conventions at the Knight center are a majority of OH/PA/MI ones, usually 1-2 days, and not big at all. So if people want to stay downtown they'll stay at the Radisson-but because of our lack of "chain" restaurants (I kid you not) Fairlawn and Green are more attractive places to stay for families of these conventions. What it does mean is that the Radisson will REALLY have to step it up now to take larger groups. I do anticpate, with all the new developments on campus and activity to go on at the stadium, a new smaller hotel would likely open close to or shortly after the stadium opens. The school I work at now, Pitt, has not one but FOUR hotels near their campus. And I couldve sworn in one of the blueprints was a 100 room hotel on the stadium plaza.
  11. ...and that's what needs to change. I for one am SICK of the people in these committees and sadly, many of our citizens that think the only frickin' university in ohio is OSU. (This is, in NO means a bash at OSU).It's time for us mid-major schools to stand up to the good old boys...and seeing this press might just help. And by the way, it's spelled seismic. :-)
  12. After last night's game, I just kept shaking my head at the win, and through most of today as well. I took my early evening nap with the assumption of waking up before work, checking the standings of NIT, and prepping for the game.I keep wondering if I'll wake up. Reiterating all the stuff that everyone has said, this is probably the darkest day of NEO sports, period. It proves that once again, when it comes to hard-working traditional universities, the big dogs don't give a flying fig about us. Period. (and that's not just athletics too). What kills me is the community reaction will probably be along the lines of either:"I knew they were going to lose" (I heard this last night, sadly)"Aww that's too bad. But that Ohio state-""Who cares?"
  13. Are you kidding me? Wow. The MAC gets no respect. But we all knew that already.
  14. Why am I NOT surprised that he came around? Regardless, this was a hard-fought game on both sides. I enjoyed the game (except the last few seconds, of course.) Well, bring on the NIT. And Miami, win it for all of us underdog, high-talent, overlooked MAC schools. and as usual,
  15. Where is he? Crying in his beer, I suppose...
  16. My first year as an Orientation Leader in 2001, we used to take all of our groups to Porky's in the JAR. He will be missed.
  17. I have seen Stambaugh stadium when driving through Youngstown...Look, It works there because it stands out above Y'town's short skyline. Akron needs something that will stand out, yet NOT detract from the other new buidings and fit the character (and remember that there MAY be other projects in front) of the rest of UA/University Park. Once again, Stambaugh will not fit at Akron. Period.
  18. Simple...our proximity to Cleveland.Until 1996, remember Akron did have a ABC affiliate, channel 23, and even after the PAX change, it ran local news until about a year or two ago, when the NBC deal ended (The news is produced by Channel 3-now runs on Cable 23). It has long been speculated that if a second station were to to have set up shop after 23 did, Akron-Canton would have made it's own television market over time, because there are some cities/towns (Mansfield, Carrollton, Alliance, etc.) that have trouble getting Cleveland stations. In fact, Canton's 67 also ran local news too...anyone remember this? And get this...If you think Y-Town having a full market is crazy...Lima Oh, has affiliates For NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox (the ABC one lauched this year)BTW, for the old-timers, how was 23's coverage on Zips Sports back then? I honestly feel that if we still had a BROADCAST television nightly news focusing on Akron, The ABJ would shape up its local coverage.
  19. 1. Yes. Stranger things have happened...remember you're talking about a team that lost to Army at HOME last year and ended up winning it all. 2. Maybe...aren't four MAC teams eligible for bids this year?3. Sigh...let me be blunt. Although Akron is finally moving out of the dregs to become a major market University in all facets, the Community and Student support is NOT going to be to where we can average 15K per game. There is too much of the following things,,,-bigger, more established/recognizable teams..you have the Browns, Steelers and OSU. -apathy...The students that come to Akron, many of them have NO sense of supporting their school at all because they couldn't go to a "real school" (now before you bash me, this is what I experienced firsthand) 4. Yep. Be prepared for a LOT of Can't supporting, probably more than when we started doing well last year. 5. I won't make one, because as we can see, anything can happen! :-)
  20. What have you heard the Community say about UA? I myself have gotten a mixed bag...some say great things about how the school has changed and that it's a great place, some have said they think the University is spending too much money trying to "take over," and some don't even consider it a real school at all. Idiots.
  21. I work nights at an area hotel, and we see the papers at 3 am...Be surprised and pleased. Very surprised and pleased.
  22. I think David Giffels' column was more aimed at how the students don't care about this case, but cared about their St. Patrick's Day plans. Having worked in campus involvement for 4 years, it's a problem we face every day... much of the students have zero interest in anything campus related. People claim that no one tells them of stuff, even if its advertised on every board on campus, over the radio, in the paper and in zipline. If students don't hear what's good, why would they hear what's bad?
