  1. Yeah because then they can run them out through inflated property values, and lack customers.Yep. They will now be paying property taxes on a $3.1 million property. I seriously doubt they can afford that for long.
  2. In 1916, the Akron Burkhardts were founded as a professional football team. They changed to the Akron Pros the next year. The APFA wasn't founded until 1920, when Akron won the first ever NFL championship. This creates a problem, since Buchtel College became UA in 1913, but the Pros weren't founded until 1916. There might have been a few independant professional teams in the area before then, but no real leagues. It was probably two club organizations that played each other.
  3. The stadium design is really starting to fill in. Seeing more steel go up would be more exciting, though.
  4. Coach Boals' name is being thrown around, as you might expect.
  5. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3452523Looks like Tim OShea is leaving for... Bryant University?
  6. http://www.ohio.com/news/20554924.htmlThey say it was arson. This is the building next door to the combination car-wash/pizza-shop on the corner of Spicer and Exchange. Property values on that corner continue to plummet with the shootings, fires, bums, ect. It just throws more doubt into the Sun Bar ruling.
  7. The biggest thing it does is give our program a connection that can be recognized worldwide. People may not have heard of Akron, but they damned sure have heard of Lebron. It will be mentioned by broadcasters every time we play on TV, even more than it is now. I know we get sick of hearing it sometimes, but Lebron is the only real identifier we have on a national scale. It's not like we have a tournament run, or even an appearance, to talk about. We have no marquee players that are going to the NBA draft. It's Nike because Lebron has his contract with Nike. If he had it with Adidas we would likely have seen some special deal with them on top of what we have already.
  8. I want to give out a huge THANK YOU to Lebron! You're the awesomest!
  9. It is a testament to UA's academic progress over the past few decades that we were even considered by investors for such programs as the corrosion program or the coal fuel cell program. It's a shame that neither of those has ever been mentioned in the local newspaper. You wonder why we get such a bad rap from the locals, it's because they are being blinded from the truth by some editor with an agenda.
  10. Just drove past the stadium site. The one last building, the first of my pics, has been demolished, and the debris has already been cleared for the most part. They have parts of a gigantic crane laid out on several flatbed semi trailors.I also noticed that one of the boarded up houses on the far side of Nash has been removed. Greek Village is beginning to take shape.
  11. JASON TAYLOR named the Face of Akron's program.I was kind of hoping for Heisman to be named for the legendary name recognition we would have received, but Jason is a great choice as well and almost as universally recognized.
  12. As always, a great write-up. I am very excited by our kick/punt return team next year. It was one of the few highlights of the team last year. I got stoked every time our defense made a stop because you knew that there was a good chance of something special happening with Jones back there. While I was less excited about kickoffs because it meant the other team scored, I knew that Williams meant there was a chance to instantly even it up.
  13. Got some pics for ya. They had the construction area thoroughly fenced off, so I had to zoom in as much as I could to get these. This is the only building left standing on the block next to the fieldhouse. Dorms will go here.More places where dorms will go. I think they will begin construction on the one that will be on Spicer sooner than anticipated. Here is a pic of the very SE corner of the stands. There are no houses left standing on the former Nash Street. This is the house that is still being sorted out in court. The one that was bought from a Board Member's son. It won't affect stadium construction. Here is good ole' Cam 2. Providing daily progress of the visitor's side construction to viewers like you and me.Here's a shot of the visitor's side. The webcams really don't give you a sense of scale. There's at least a 20-foot drop down to the pit.A zoomed-out shot of the tower. It's about the same height as the firld house right now. It will be double that before we're through. The home stands.A close up of the tower.A shot taken from the corner of Brown and Exchange. Field house included for scale.I have pics of other construction projects around campus here.
  14. I took a stroll around campus today, after managing to borrow a nice (not cell-phone) digital camera. There is more going on than Infocision Stadium in terms of construction. I tried to capture everything that has changed in the last few months. This campus is near unrecognizable to anyone who hasn't seen it in the last four years. This is Auburn. They are completely re-doing the street-level area. I think it might stay as a parking deck like it was before, but it might also become more classrooms for Engineering.Looking North:Looking West:The original part Guzzetta Hall is getting a facelift. I can only hope it looks as nice as the brand-new addition to the building in the back. The Korean War memorial got some new plaques on the marble columns. The Student Union is getting a nice wall of rocks near the entrance by the roundabout. The pile of dirt that used to be Carrol Hall is coming along nicely. The parking lot outside Memorial Hall has been removed, likely for the same greenspace that involves the former Carrol Hall. All sorts of old houses are getting boarded up across Spicer, possibly in preperation for the supposed Greek Village project. These are on the remaining part of Nash Street. They also added another clock tower on the corner of Spicer and Buchtel, by the Chapel, but I couldn't take anymore pics.Be sure to check out my pics of the stadium construction site in the Stadium Cam thread, as well.
  15. http://www.uakron.edu/resources/campusMapNew/UA has taken a step into the future by replacing their old, confusing campus map with one based on Google Map technology. It allows for changes to be made much more quicky (perhaps out of necessity ).They don't have the Rubber Bowl on it, but it would have to be removed next year anyways.

  17. I just drove past the stadium on the way home from work. As of now, what you see as a "tower" is actually only four stories tall. It will be at least double that by the time it is finished. It's not even as tall as the fieldhouse roof yet. This thing will be HUGE.
  18. Holy crap! I wasn't expecting that kind of vertical construction for a few more weeks.Seeing that has me stoked for this football season to get here as soon as possible, so that we can end it as soon as possible and move it on campus! They had better hurry and get whatever it is they planned on doing done, because it looks like some nasty storms are heading that way. A series of 100-foot tall steel columns are not a good place to be during a thunderstorm.
  19. The only thing I don't like about it is the Mayflower still standing there.
  20. I can agree with you, technically. It is probably a bad choice of words.I think that I am only trying to express the fact that the property owner basically has no choice in the matter.Take the money and leave. In most cases, your argument would be valid and I would agree with you. The problem when using it in this particular case is that the Nemers agreed to leave, without a fight. They had the choice to challenge UA's aquisition of the property, but they did not. They only raised a stink when they saw UA's offer for compensation. In my mind, you can't agree to vacate a property and then complain when you find out aren't offered what you think you should be owed. If they were worried about not getting compensated as much as they wanted, they should have fought to keep the U from taking the property in the first place.
  21. This year depends almost entirely on our tranfers coming through. Ryan Bain, Andrew Johnson, and Deryn Bowser will be key. They will make or break our season.
  22. Athlon is crap.Rivals and, to a lesser extent, Scout are far better than these sports magazines, and we all know that even Rivals ans Scout are pretty terrible. The only one of those mags that I consider remotely credible is Blue Ribbon.
  23. Central Hower is still owned and utilised by APS. We won't even have a chance to aquire it until the entire school construction project is completed, which means we have to wait for every school in the city to be re-done. That could take at least a decade.
  24. Akronites have taken the "grass is greener" mentality to the extreme.
  25. http://www.ohio.com/news/19625644.htmlLooks like he was expelled.
