http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/9144381.htmlGovernor brings message to UA He's touring the state with his education plan By Beacon Journal staff report Published on Tuesday, Aug 14, 2007 Gov. Ted Strickland hopes to present a 10-year master plan next year for the fledgling University System of Ohio, he said during brief remarks at the University of Akron Monday. In the new blueprint, Ohio's public universities and community colleges will be encouraged to pursue initiatives that distinguish them. Strickland stopped short of saying he would ask some colleges to abandon programs to avoid duplication and reduce costs.''That would be premature,'' he said to an audience of about 75 political and education leaders in the Goodyear Polymer Center.Strickland's visit was one of several he's taking to explain his proposal to Ohio's 13 public universities and 24 community colleges. He emphasized the need for collaboration and the need for STEM that stands for science, technology, engineering and math programs to make the state more competitive in a global economy.UA Provost Beth Stroble said the university ''was doing STEM before STEM was cool.''She outlined steps UA is taking to expand STEM education, including the Governor's Summer Honors Institute for Gifted Students. The 16th annual residential camp for 60 students pursuing biology, computer science and engineering technology was held last week.Strickland said he found it a ''little troubling'' that some fear STEM studies would come at the cost of the arts. Students should have access to all kinds of learning, he said.''Do not let the world squeeze you into a mold,'' the former minister said, loosely quoting Romans 12:2.UA President Luis Proenza vowed to ''set the pace'' for the governor's education program. But that didn't stop him from taking a cheerful swipe at other Ohio universities. He said UA is to Northeast Ohio what Ohio State is to Central Ohio and the University of Cincinnati is to Southwest Ohio.''May Ohio State learn to keep its place,'' he said to laughter.

David Lee Morgan or Rasor would do well in that spot in terms of Zips coverage, but Pluto was the sport's page personality. He wrote on everything sports related. Don't expect them to replace him with solely a Zips writer. In that case, I just hope that whomever does replace him realizes that not covering a sports team located across the street from you office is just plain stupid. UA is slowly taking over the city's economics, skyline, city profile, and research and developement, and is even becoming the major defining thing about Akron. Why not sports, too? It all starts with getting the community to care about the Zips and to show up to games. We could go 10-2 this year and it wouldn't make a difference if the media doesn't let anybody know about it.

http://www.ohio.com/sports/9144481.htmlAn article I saw on the front page of the sports section about our QB situation. I think we'll be fine with whomever makes it, but I think one will transfer when it happens. We will have to adjust the offense to better suit each QB's talents, but it's not that big of a problem. I think you'll see a lot of running. "Run the ball, stop the run" will be our motto this year.

Yes. The best on the team. Tell me who did a better job in that game. Anderson, who only completed less than half his passes and didn't have a good drive until he played against the third stringers? Dorsey who only played against the backups and gave up a stupid safety? Quinn, who just chatted with players on the sideline and didn't bother to watch the game?Frye isn't a great QB, he's very average. The rest of them are worse. And don't give me any "But, but, but, Brady Quinn" stuff; starting him now would be the biggest mistake the Browns could make since giving up high first round draft pick to acquire him. He hasn't been through a week's worth of practices with the team, learning a new offense, and still getting to know the players on the team. He may be ready later, but certainly not during the pre-season or the first few regular season games. The reason the Browns are the way they are is because both the fans and the staff put all their hope on unproven quarterbacks who all too often turn out crappy regardless of their individual talent because the talent around them is never adressed. This past off-season, they actually focused on the biggest problems on the team which were the offensive line, the cornerbacks, and the offensive coordinator. Give it a few more pre-season games.

Maybe because the mistakes he made were rookie mistakes?Problem is, Charlie isn't a rookie and shouldn't be making those mistakes anymore. True. Charlie shouldn't have run at the end of the half. The fumble/TD thing was as much Harrison's fault as it was Charlie's, but it shouldn't have happened. The running thing is just Charlie's nature; when he was at Akron, it was his job to score by any means necessary because much of the players surrounding him couldn't, and the same was true at Cleveland for a while. How many rushing TD's did Reuben Droughns have for the Browns? This Browns team has gotten better. The O-line has improved even with their injuries, and K2 and B. Edwards have matured a bit. Jamal Lewis seems like a better RB than Droughns. Frye isn't the only option out there on the field, but he has yet to realise it and makes mistakes trying to do too much. All that being said, he is clearly the best QB on the team at this time, and so should start. Will Quinn become better than him eventually? I have no idea, Quinn has only been in practice for less than a week. Frye is still the man, for now.

Patriot Bowl seats for Season Tix holders
ZachTheZip replied to doccomet87's topic in Akron Zips Football
I've commented on this in other threads, so in summary, the seats suck. I think all it means is that they are expecting a large walk-up crowd of Clevelanders, which is unlikely. I am really concerned as to where they put the AK-Rowdies. It would make sense to stick them in the Dawg Pound or behind the team benches. I have a funny feeling that they will be placed near a corner of the stadium or in the nosebleeds.I'm sure everybody will have ample opportunity to move to better seats once it becomes apparent that attendance is not as high as some officials have far too optimistically predicted. -
Let me know how it goes. I'll be sitting at work, staring at the wall. Such is the life of a college student; you have to work when you get the opportunities.I usually try to ask the coaches and players some good questions, ones that make them think a bit. Sometimes it takes a fan's question to get them thinking about something they may have not noticed in practice. You guys will have to take my place tonight.

I think he had 3 tackles. He wasn't too bad. I hope he makes the team.

Akron always plays their best at OSU, it seems. It will be a lot closer than most OSU fans think. OSU has a better kicker and punter as far as I can tell, but I'm liking Gary Pride as a kick returner that can really give you the occasional big return. OSU won't expect him since he is a frosh. OSU's QB may suprise a lot of people, but who is he going to throw to? A new QB and new recieving corp usually means lots and lots of running. Wells is not as good as people in Columbus seem to think. I grew up watching this kid and saw many of his games at Garfield and unless he has changed completely, he is not ready to assume the main RB position at an upper Big 10 school like OSU. Look for our linebackers to stuff him pretty well. He will get his yards, but there will be no big runs and few game changing plays coming from him. We'll all see what happens next month. For now, lets focus on blowing out Army and finding a way to get a good crowd into Browns Stadium.

I am not a math major, nor do I fully understand the QB rating system. However, that can't be right. Frye is 12-15, Anderson is 7-16. Neither of them threw a TD or a pick, yet Anderson has a higher rating. ???? Heh. I just realized that I reversed the completions and the attempts. I had Anderson going 16 for 7. lolHere are the fixed ratings:Frye - 100.56Anderson - 58.33Dorsey - 81.71That better resembles how it looked like each one played during the game. Frye was clearly better than the competition in this game. Sure, his mistake at the end of the half likely cost them 3 points, but it's preseason and it's not like the others did much better.

Special teams will decide this game. If our defense holds Wells reasonably well and we avoid giving up the big play, the Zips can run the ball all day long with our relatively deep stable of running backs. Wear away the clock and get good field position or possibly return a kickoff/punt for a TD. Score your field goals. We could put a nice scare into them. On the unlikely chance we win or even go into OT, I will be very interested to see the effect it would have on the local community and fan support.

http://www.aroundtheoval.com/story/2007/8/8/225536/0410So here's the upcoming game from a scarlet and gray perspective. Lots of backhanded compliments.

I'm interested where they are going to put the students that bother to show up. (It might be just me and a few friends). From the looks of where they put you season ticket holders, I may end up in the nosebleeds at the corner of the endzone. Still, it's better than sitting right behind a light pole on the visitors side like the student section at the Rubber Bowl./Hope the toilets don't explode again.

So what? Every year UA is ranked in the middle third of the rankings, and by the end we move up somewhere around 60-70 spots. Its because we're in the MAC. After last year, I don't care about RPI, SOS, rankings, or any of that crap. They mean nothing. The Zips just need to win their games. It's that simple and it's been that simple all along. No complex formulas and "who on our schedule has beat who" crap. Just win the ****ing games!

Does anyone believe that he was only joking?!?!? I think this may be the way Crennel has been coaching since arriving at Cleveland YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING !?!?!? Umm... Wow. Just Wow.
-
That sucks. I liked Hakes the most. I guess JD's choice just got a little easier. We will have a #1 QB and a backup, or possibly a 2 QB system like Florida had last year with each one bringing something different and playing more depending on the situation. KC and Rodgers will be in the mix next year, so I expect another QB to leave after this season.
-
Yep. We're the "little engine that could". There's no way we can compete with any team, but we keep on playing anyways. We should abolish UA sports alltogether and donate our facilities directly to the city. Why even bother? All hail the Don! He is obviously the reason UA has grown so much better over the last few years.
-
I'd go watch the practice today and see who's missing, but there's this really nasty thunderstorm right now, so practice may be moved indoors. (I could never dream of saying that until the field house was built. I love that place!)
-
I forgot about him. Hakes really is the odd man out. A team needs to condition a starting QB every two years, or four if they are really good. Otherwise it's not worth it to sit for three/four years just to start for one. Getsy was QB for 2 years, Frye for four. It makes the most sense to have the QBs on a cycle like that. If not, there is always someone who gets screwed out of playing time (whether they deserved it or not is a different story). I'll count this as a rumor until I hear it straight from JD's mouth.
-
If it's true, it's not suprising. Someone was bound to transfer. Or become ineligible. I can't see Matt Rodgers leaving, he can redshirt and start when the others graduate. If true, It is probably either Jackson or Jacquemaine. One would have to change positions or ride pine for the rest of their career.
-
I'm going to get my Army ticket tommorow. I'm still a student, so the rest of the home games are covered for me.

The Rubber Bowl can't be completely torn down without compromising the structural integrity of the hill it was built into. In fact, the reason it was built is to hiold up the hill for the Derby Downs. The road above the stadium would collapse, the Derby Downs would be destroyed, and a whole mess of problems would be created. It is a serious problem. It would take the combined might of all the Engineering students and professors to figure out how to bring it down safely without anything else coming down with it.

It's behind Crouse now, and it has pretty much doubled in size. It's near the main entrance to the Student Union.
