WOW did that blogger fire up some BigTen faithful! It's hilarious to me to see such incendiary commentary regarding what he had to say. In many years past, BigTen fans would simply approach the MAC like a strange but cute little child, likely worthy of their sympathy more than anything else. "Great game guys. If only the ball had bounced a little differently out there, we would have scored only 45 instead of 70 on you today. Keep working hard little fellas."Everybody who even occasionally watches college FB knows that the BigTen is down, and not just having an odd off year. The conference has fallen far from where they once were, to the point that the last couple of years, early-season prognosticators worried that yet again, OSWHO would weasel their way back to the national championship game, only to be crushed, yet again. Sigh. That says a helluva lot about the Big Ten's stature in the eyes of college FB watchers around the country, that nobody wanted to see them in the big game, knowing that they would be crushed by a better team from (probably) the SEC.Damn I love it. Now I want to see those condescending jackasses in the Little Eleven play more home and homes against the MAC. Won't happen very often anytime soon, I know, but I can dream. :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip

U of A vs U at B Opening Odds
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Looks like Logan has us at 2.5 now. I'm going to predict, mainly because I'm a complete homer, a 10-point victory for the Zippers Thursday night in the RB farewell.GO ZIPS.SeeTeeZip -
Rain and 55 for Thursday
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to Lee Adams's topic in Akron Zips Football
Only Buchtel Field? For a 30,000 seat stadium they'd limit tailgating to that small area? They couldn't POSSIBLY screw it up this bad. I hope you are misinformed.Agreed entirely. Buchtel Field refers to the FB outdoor practice field that makes up part of the Lee Jackson Field complex right? If so, where the hell are tailgaters supposed to park? There are precious few parking spots around that field. It makes no sense. GO ZIPS.SeeTeeZip -

I'm sure there will be an elderly UA trustee or two that will fight having open containers on campus 6 days per year. Hopefully someone overrules such narrow-minded clowns. Pretty much every college in North America lets their fans tailgate. Zips fans can handle themselves just as well as tailgating fans from any other region of the United States. Probably better (if we beat Buffalo, I don't see any of us overturning cars on Exchange).Speak for yourself Cap'n!GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZipper :D :D   -
Care for Some Holiday Gumbo or Jumbalaya?
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
I think the Zips are a team on the rise. They'll beat Buffalo, and I think that if they don't suffer catastrophic injuries or issues, they'll win 8. An 8-win Zips team is a lock for a bowl game. It's a great way to begin the new era at InfoSumma huh?GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip -
How do they keep doing this.....
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football
As I've followed MAC football more closely, I've been impressed by how little it means when, in isolation, a "name" high school kid joins one of these football programs. There are so many things that impact that player's ability to make any discernible impact on the field, including eligibility and academic progress issues, their place on depth charts, their physical growth and determination to get faster and stronger, their performance in coaches' eyes, etc, etc, etc.I think it much wiser to simply watch who actually makes it onto the team, and then onto the field of play when the games begin. There are likely at least a few Bains every year on every team in the country. Besides, in the end VerKlempt U sucks, year after year. I CAN'T imagine how badly they would have been losing of late without Edelman. Next year and the year after, they will suck. If Superstar LB From Wherever wants to join el-lameos, OK. He'll have the normal experience with the hippies at that most bland and unexceptional of universities, a place that oozes apathy and boredom. GO ZIPS.SeeTeeZip -
Rain and 55 for Thursday
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to Lee Adams's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'll be there. I'll predict 15K for the game, but really am already thinking, a lot, about InfoSumma next year. Especially if the weather is bad, it will make it all the more clear that the entire "package" that was the Rubber Bowl was, and not in a good way, of another era. It was a cobbled together commuter football solution for what was a cobbled together commuter university. Akron and the university have come too far to feel too badly about leaving this dump behind. I'm looking forward to taking my last leak in a rusty ceramic trough in a restroom that smells, this time of year, like super-heated piss. Sitting on fraying fiberglass bench seats that are flaking paint onto my ass. All nostalgia aside, this place has always been second rate and damn it we all deserve better. On a brighter note, where do posters think the prime tailgating areas will be next Fall?GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip -
Attendance for RB's last game
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to ZippyTuba11's topic in Akron Zips Football
The Beacon has been running some advertisements for the game, and with the extreme low cost of gaining admission, along with promotions and whatnot, I think there should be at least 15K unless the weather is terrible. Some old timers will show up just because it's the last game there. If there are many news stories on the television news channels then there will be a few thousand more. Regardless I'll be there and hope the team does it up. Don't forget too that there will be fireworks afterward, which will draw some more. Truth be told though, I'd like nothing more than to see a huge, rocking crowd on a chilly Fall night sending out the joint in style and with good cheer (read beer). We can hope.GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip -
I've found myself becoming much more of a "core" Zips fan than ever before. A little background: I graduated from Akron in 1988 and attended games with another board member 3 or 4 times a year while a student. I remember well the days of the OVC, Coach Dennison, Faust coming in, etc. I remember working at a local small business back then when the Zips, under Bob Huggins, played and came close to beating Michigan in the NCAA tournament. They were beating Michigan at half time and the game announcers were stunned. We watched on a little black and white TV, and even the company owner, a Can't grad, was cheering like a teenager. I remember thinking at the time that Akron was sort of small time football and basketball, that the Rubber Bowl and JAR were generally lacking, that it was mildly embarrassing that many of the opponents who came in were from schools I had never heard of before. The games were entertaining, but still I took the whole thing for granted in ways that kids usually do. I got married, moved to the West Coast, was transferred all over the country with my work, turned into a middle aged guy, and moved back to Akron almost 4 years ago.I went to a couple games last year and bought season's tickets this year and for next year at the new stadium. I'm not exactly sure that I can put my finger on why I've become, after all of these years, so "into" Akron sports, but I'm becoming a real fan. I find myself taking great pride in the university having come so far from where it was in those days, and feel hope for what it will become in years to come. I suppose that I feel a combination of "chip on shoulder" about the little-school-that-could coming to roost after all these years, and satisfaction, almost validation, of my own attendance here. Akron has been so hard hit over the years, but has weathered what has been a slow-motion train wreck of regional economic decline spanning more than 35 years, and is hopefully poised for dynamic years ahead. I suppose some of it is age too, but it all makes me wonder what are the common threads that bind Zips fans together. So, enough about me. Why are you a Zips fan?

I would love to see the size and volume/power of the band increase going into InfoSumma. I assume they'll sound louder in the newer and smaller stadium, but man, with the investment and hope that are going into the new facility, how cool would it be to see a very large band, with LOTS of horns, belting out kick ass music with authority. I know the present incarnation plays well and I like them. However, I think that I'll be looking for something that knocks our socks off next year and is fun and entertaining to watch.Oh, and I like the script but it does look difficult to execute well. There are other cool things that can be done, but I'll tell you, when you're on a field and a large band with mega horn power turns and hits you with a blast it can really have an impact. Akron needs a large, loud, raucous horn-heavy band going into the future.GO ZIPS.SeeTeeZip

Lemon's 2 PT Defensive PAT
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
The goodyear blimp was there cause the game was on ESPNU and they need those omniscient shots for breaks and stuff.JSTOUD it appears that you're close to some of the players on the roster. If you have the chance please let Lemon know that Zips fans love the hell out of the way he's played this year. He's become a real presence out there this year. Can't wait to cheer for him and rest of the crew at InfoSumma next year.GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZipper -
Lemon's 2 PT Defensive PAT
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
As he turned the corner coming out of the end zone, I thought for sure it was Williams. Then at about the 50 as he was rumbling, bumbling and frankly, slowing down, I thought "what, a d-back who isn't streaking all the way?" Only then did I realize it was the big man! That was one freaking kick ass play. The Zips did it up last night! It was really a fun, almost surreal night to be there. (1) Wednesday night. (2) Incredibly good weather in November. (3) The band playing Queen and other '70s tunes in the half time show. (4) The Goodyear blimp overhead the entire game. I'm not sure why really, but for me it was just a weird evening. It was, however, a blast.GO ZIPS BABY!SeeTeeZip -
The Last Nice Tailgating Day at The Rubber Bowl

I'll concur with general board sentiment in saying EEEFFFFFFF Testicle Tech. I would be VERY pleased to see the Zippers play them in the MACC and beat them down to blow up their season. After that, the Bowl game would almost just be icing on the cake for me. I will say though that when it comes to getting a little exposure with the people of the Akron area and hoping that they'll be interested in seeing InfoSumma AND the Zips too, a bowl game against a team people are interested in would very valuable. Of course, if the Zippers don't come through as the season gets started again next week, these points will all be moot and we'll be back to gnashing of teethGO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip

The Acme Zip Game
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
UA1987 - Here is my quote:"If you want to continue a discussion on scheduling, please start a new topic. This topic is reserved for the Acme Zip game."Pretty clear. I simply asked you to move the discussion and create a new thread.Since you elected to not start a new topic, but to divert this thread, and because you seem to like attacking me, your post was deleted. This year I personally paid $400.00 in 2008 to upgrade this board and keep it running smoothly. I did so to promote discussion regarding Zips Athletics, and I'm happy to do it. I did not do it to give people a forum to toss around 3rd grade-level insults. Other boards may encourage that stuff, but not this one. If that's a tough rule for anyone to follow, those people are encouraged to participate elsewhere. Thanks,CKCap'n, all joking aside, it's clear to most here that you put a lot of effort into these boards, and we appreciate having this place to get together. We all owe you a beer, and then some.GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip -

Listened on the radio, and thank goodness I wasn't at the game. I'm PISSED. The Zips just beat the hell out of their fans seemingly every week. They should have crushed this crappy EMU team, and instead they played a nail biter that one could argue they shouldn't have even won. This is NOT entertaining, and I'm sick to death of Jacq et al playing down to their opponent every week. Damn it. Seriously, I'm just pissed right now. Can't we crush, mutilate, destroy an opponent, ever? I'm starting to very much dislike Jacq and Brookhart, simply because even UA wins are epic agonyfests. SeeTeeZip

Agreed, but Akron football barely exists with AKRON media either. I'm amazed at how little the Leaking Urinal covers the team. They leave most of the coverage to a student blogger. Now don't get me wrong. He does a nice job, but his coverage is irregular because he's a student. Now that the Leaking is a tiny-town-rag, you'd think they'd wring maximum bang for the buck by covering the teams that are three blocks away. Nope. Rarely are the Zips featured. Drives me nuts.As far as CSU football, I have one thing to say: Yawn. GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZip

Eastern Michigan vs Akron Zips
ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
I say we're going to kick a$$ and picked the number one option. This team needs to decide whether it's a good team or a bad team. They must beat teams like EMU, convincingly. I'm willing that it be so.GO ZIPS!SeeTeeZipper -
I voted combination, although I was away this weekend and missed the game. I just happened to log into ESPN game tracker and saw Jacq's INT in the 4th deep in UA territory, and wondered whether he had just thrown the game away. Ouch.Based on what I'm reading the thing that bums me out as much as the loss is the tailgating and general atmosphere at the bowl Saturday. How many others are thinking of making the drive to see the EMU game? I may have to get up there to see the Zippers notch it at .500.SeeTeeZip

The game appears to be turning into a nail biter! Did Jac just throw an INT deep in Akron territory? OUCH.
