  1. Pat Kirwan from Sirius radio is out at Browns camp today.Fantastic show, can't say enough good things about it.If your a Browns fan and you missed it, you really missed out. They interview everybody live, Romeo, Bryalon, Baxter, Savage, McGinest etc...To keep this Akron related I'll give you quotes from the Frye interview.-Year one you look at your first option and you think too much, now hopefully all the film study on the off season will keep me from thinking.-My junior year at Akron I called 80% of the plays at the line.-I'm expecting to get blitzed a lot. We have been working on that. I have a blitz tape in the computer right now-I'm not really a practice guy, I like game time, I like taking off the red jersey-I had no freedom on checkdowns last year, I might this year-Mo has me working on 3 step drops and getting the ball out quick. A lot of short stuff-My biggest challenge this year is to not be late on my throws. I was late a lot last year-I ended up going to Akron because I was 6'2" 170, but I wouldn't change anythingPat's comments before and after the interview-Charlie's body type is like Chad Pennington, not impressive, but he has put some muscle on this year-He throws with his arm and it might get tired. He doesn't throw with his shoulder and his non throwing arm.-He needs a three step drop. They should run a lot of bunch formations to help him outMcGinest on Frye-I don't know much about him-I talked to him about the way Brady took over the team-He is a fighter, He has weapons around him so he won't have a lot of pressureBaxter on Frye-He is coming along well-He is not afraid to sling the ball down field, he keeps the defense honest
  2. Dantonio Bearcat through 2010Football coach's deal was extended by Goin last yearBY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITERAlready the rumors have begun: If the University of Cincinnati has another losing football season, new athletic director Mike Thomas might be looking to get rid of Mark Dantonio and install his own man - perhaps Akron's J.D. Brookhart - as the head coach.Don't believe it.The UC coach, who signed a five-year deal when he was hired to replace Rick Minter in December 2003, has five years remaining on his contract after former athletic director Bob Goin, who hired Dantonio, quietly extended it before he retired at the end of last November. And that's OK with Thomas."The confidence that was placed in Mark is consistent with the confidence that I have in Mark," Thomas said Thursday. "I truly believe and hope that Mark is coaching here for a long time."Dantonio, the 50-year-old former Ohio State defensive coordinator, says he intends to be at UC for the long haul. And his contract extension makes it likely that he'll have all the time he needs to attempt to build a successful Bearcats program."I want to be here," Dantonio said. "I am not interested in going to another school. ... I have not applied for another job. I don't want to, or I wouldn't have come here. My children are here. I'm not interested in moving them into different schools. That's where I'm at."Goin actually extended Dantonio's contract twice. He added a year after Dantonio's first season in 2004 and then again after last season's 4-7 team."At Cincinnati, five years isn't going to get it done," Goin said. "I felt really comfortable with him there, not just the way he coaches but the way he relates to the players."I knew we had a problem (last year) but he never let it get away from him. He wasn't a screaming maniac."The school didn't announce the extensions, Goin said, because "that wasn't earth-shaking to say, 'We want you to be here a longer period of time (than the original contract).' "Dantonio is now under contract through the 2010 season. He makes a base salary of $175,000, but also receives $130,000 for his television and radio shows, $60,000 for public and alumni relations activity, $60,000 when total home attendance exceeds 40,000 and $75,000 for every year he remains at UC through 2008. He can make more money with various incentives.Dantonio inherited a senior-laden program when he took over at UC, and those players went 7-5 and won the Fort Worth Bowl.Last year, with a team dominated by freshmen and sophomores, the Bearcats were expected to struggle. And they did.As Dantonio begins his third season with the arrival of players on Sunday, only 20 remain on the roster from the Minter era."I don't feel like the clock started running until we got into the Big East (in 2005)," Goin said, "and we had these (new) facilities done. I think his clock is running now. He's going to be successful. We're very fortunate to have a guy like that leading that program."Dantonio was very close to Goin but says he also has a solid relationship with Thomas."I've enjoyed being around Mike Thomas," he said. "He wants to win a championship in every sport. That's what I want. From day one, our goal was to win a championship here. How long that takes - is it four years? Is it five years? Whatever it takes, we'll get there."Source (click here)
  3. When Penn State lines up on defense this season, the Nittany Lions could have a new look. The 4-3 alignment that has been the scheme of choice for the past several seasons could be replaced by a 3-4 alignment once coach Joe Paterno gets a good look at what he has to work with during training camp. One look at the Penn State defense on paper suggests that a move to the 3-4 could be a possibility. Penn State is loaded with talent at linebacker and is thin on the defensive line.More on PSU (click here)

  5. Don't buy them ahead of time.Wait until you get here. Get here early enough to tailgate.Meet a few of the Akron fans. Ask around and you might find a REAL good deal in the lot.Stop back at zipsnation the week before we play you.
  6. Nice article.Welcome to the site.
  7. I think they USED to be big rivals. Since the Browns come back in 99, I think the Browns have only won twice.Good competition makes for good rivals, plus the proximity in cities. Competion has lacked for a decade.Maybe it will be back some day.One of my favorite quotes about the Steelers Browns came from Chris Spielman in an SI article when askedabout an upcoming game. Paraphrasing: SI Writer, you played in OSU vs Michigan and Browns vs Steelers, what is a bigger rivalry game? Chris, neither compare to McKinley vs Massillon.
  8. I'll be "in the hunt" for free tickets in the K-ent parking lot. Now I get K-ent's slogan for the year!
  9. More comments from BJ readers that I found at the bottom of the article:CommentsI disagree when you say that this schedule is a disaster (Maybe if Can't or Buffalo were playing it). You obviously do not have much faith in the ability of this team. After the first two contests, every game is winnable. Miami and BG, the two big boys in the east are at home. Toledo will be a tough game on the road. Cincinnati was not very strong last year. UA definitely was better than them even on their turf. Even with two losses at the start of the season, I think the Zips will still win at least 8 games (All 5 at home and at least three on the road). They will repeat as MAC East Champs and will again go bowling. * Posted by: Craig SpringfordThe real tough part of the schedule isn't the reoad games but the undesirable weeknight games that the MAC office stuck Akron with again this year. Hey MAC, these are the defending champions! Show a little respect instead of the usual second-class treatment. * Posted by: Anonymous *Not a bad article. I would like to see the next one talk about the attendance needs and how Akron must average 15,000 per game. Tickets are cheap for D-1A football. Season tickets are cheaper than one game ticket at Happy Valley where Akron will be playing it's season opener! * Posted by: AnonymousTime for a new stadium near Canal Park and the University. * Posted by: Anonymous *The schedule is a real doozy. The Zips have become a lot of fun to follow, and I wish them well. I think the program will really blossom when we get a new stadium on or near the campus. * Posted by: Anonymous *"Getsy is the first-team preseason All-MAC quarterback choice and rated the nation's 10th-best quarterback by The Sporting News." If Luke and his recievers gel early, this schedule could help his possible future worth if he decides to continue his carreer past college. With comparisons to Leftwich, Big Ben, etc. already out there, I'm excited to see him against a defense like Penn State. GO ZIPS!!! * Posted by: Anonymous *Tell me something I don't know if I didn't pick up the schedule and read it myself. * Posted by: John David
  10. I uploaded the "top ten" when ESPN's Chris Berman is talking about Akron sports. They show Hixon's catch at the MAC championship game in the clip.My favorite part is when Luke pumps to move the safety up and then goes deep. Hope this helps. This will be up for 7 days or 100 downloads

  14. Ex-Ohio State running back transfers to Jackson StateAssociated PressJACKSON, Miss. - Former Ohio State running back Erik Haw says he will transfer to Jackson State, a Division I-AA school.Haw, a 6-1, 212-pound sophomore who has three years of eligibility remaining, rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries last season for the Buckeyes. Haw said he decided to transfer after learning he would likely be low on the depth chart at running back going into this year.Haw said he picked the Tigers over UCLA, Arizona State, Rutgers and West Virginia.By transferring to Jackson State, he is eligible to play immediately instead of having to sit out a season if he went to another Division I-A school."I wanted to play right away. That's the biggest reason I chose Jackson State," Haw said.Haw went to Independence High School in Columbus, Ohio. He played in four games with the Buckeyes in 2005.

  18. Erik Haw, RB, Columbus Independence (Insiders #58 RB )Haw (5-11, 210) was a finalist for the Ohio Mr. Football award after rushing for 3,030 yards and scoring 29 touchdowns over his team’s 10-game regular season and three playoff games. Ended up averaging over 8 yards a carry. Earned co-Ohio Associated Press state offensive player of the year honors in Division II. Haw turned 40-yard times of 4.21 and 4.28 seconds at the OSU camp last summer. He was immediately offered and accepted on July 3. He was also interested in Michigan. Haw was ranked as Ohio’s fourth-best prospect by Ohio High. He is ranked as the nation’s 11th-best running back by SuperPrep and No. 18 nationally at the position by ESPN.com’s Tom Lemming. Holds a 3.0 GPA and scored a 17 on the ACT. Kirk's Analysis: Star ranking: Nationally, Haw didn't get the rankings he should have since he didn't really explode onto the recruiting scene until the summer of '03, but Ohioans know that he's one of the best. He's a blazing fast back with great tools and strength. He can be a workhorse or a game-breaker. He's experienced a meteoric rise since June of '03, and you can expect that to continue. When talking to him, there's a sense that there's something special about Haw as a player and person.Predicted top 5 "breakout" player in Big Ten last year????Spring "star" in last years battle for starting job???Michigan RB knew about it in FebruaryFebruary 22 2006 06:50 PMJust as soon as the recruiting season has wrapped, it has already started. And, with that, you have new information surfacing that makes you scratch your head. Case in point is an article today by Michigan scout.com site, GoBlueWolverine. In getting updates on '07 prospects, they interviewed(premium link) Warren Harding (OH) RB, Daniel Herron who had this to say about the Ohio State running back situation:"They're pretty loaded at running back and they just got that Wells dude, But they told me they have two running backs that are going to transfer."
  19. Is Akron #1 right now
  20. Here is a pretty good fact sheet on the subject Eminent domain is not magic. The University can not just wave a magic wand and say "eminent domain"and they receive the property they choose. It may wind up in court taking more than a year.

  23. sounds familar Bearcats' Nike logo outadidas inBY DUSTIN DOW | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITERUniversity of Cincinnati fans, donning themselves in swoosh-covered apparel for years, had better get ready to change logos. The Bearcats are changing looks. Cincinnati formally announced its multi-year, multi-sport partnership with adidas Monday, signaling an end to Nike's domination of UC men's basketball jerseys. The agreement - which has yet to be signed - means Cincinnati's men's basketball team will play in adidas-designed uniforms and shoes beginning in 2006-07.ADVERTISEMENTThe deal also provides adidas gear for 14 other UC athletic teams, with football and men's and women's soccer continuing to play in Nike until their separate deals run out.Consumer apparel with the adidas logo is expected to reach stores before the beginning of the basketball season. The deal gives UC a means to market itself in an aggressive campaign planned by adidas that includes yet-to-be finalized uniforms."We're going for something completely unique," said UC senior associate director of athletics Mike Waddell."Something that's not currently in the adidas uniform template. And we want to capitalize on our incredibly popular C-Paw brand."The C-Paw logo brought in an average of $47,123.53 in annual royalties from Nike from 2001-05."We expect there to be a seamless transition," said Derek Hughes, spokesperson for Collegiate Licensing Company, the nation's leading collegiate trademark and licensing company."If adidas can continue to get products to the marketplace, it shouldn't have any affect on the fans. Especially if the selection is still there from the retailer standpoint, we anticipate minimal fan impact."The selection will be there, Waddell said. Because of the growing relationship between UC and adidas, he said the adidas logo and image would be more associated with UC athletics than the Nike logo has been. The agreement also differs from the former UC-Nike partnership in that all of UC's athletic teams will benefit; before, Nike products were limited in general to basketball, soccer and football. The adidas deal is being negotiated with the entire athletic department. Nike's agreement came through former coach Bob Huggins. New coach Mick Cronin, who had his own adidas deal at Murray State, has shoe and apparel endorsement deals built into his contract with UC.Nike won't be prevented from making Cincinnati shirts or hats as long as UC receives royalties for the products.
