  1. Probably when they had MGK in town a year or two ago. The line to get in was out the door and wrapped around the building. In their infinite wisdom, UA decided to hold the event in a small venue that holds about 100 people. They probably turned away hundreds more. My guess is that they were expecting a turnout similar to what they usually get for no-name comedians and washed up pop-stars. When more people showed up they had no back up plan. Edit: The next night Can't State had MGK on campus. They gave him a huge venue, which filled to capacity. He said that Can't State was easily the highlight of the weekend. UA officials has a knack for blowing these sort of things.
  2. Wow...I wish I could have made it to that show. But that was also a couple years TBK were relevant nationally. LOL. What were the other options this year? I didn't even hear about the voting this year(gee, I wonder why only 1,000 students voted...). I have a hard time believing that Owl City could beat out anyone worth a damn. What a waste! This reminds of local politics. A few hundred elderly people vote in favor of a senior center and the entire town is forced to pay for it. The University should either better publicize the voting process or drop the paper thin veil of 'democracy'. To be clear, I said CSU! CSU has like what...500 students living on campus? I know they can get big acts because of locale, but Akron can certainly do as well as Ohio U. Athens is in BFE.
  3. Can someone explain to me how OU gets Kendrick Lamar, Can't State gets Kid Cudi, and even Cleveland State (of all places) gets Jay-Z? Meanwhile, Akron snags....Owl City. I'm not suggesting that any of the other artists are good, but at least they're relevant... Akron is really slacking. They need to get the Black Keys at the Info. Market it as a "homecoming"...Dan and Pat love Akron, and even took classes here. I guarantee they would do it. (charge for non students. The U could make a killing.) Invite Lebron and make it a all around Akron-centric event. I don't know. Anything to fill up that stadium, because football sure isn't cutting it.
  4. They should have taken an audiology course at UA.
  5. After watching a couple sweet 16 games, I came to one conclusion: we need quicker, more athletic guards. And yes, this was true even before the AA fiasco. Bentancourt will be good enough for us to win the MAC every year. But if we plan on winning in the tournament, we need to upgrade at the PG/SG position.
  6. Yes. Isaiah Johnson also had an offer from Xavier. We are at the top of the MAC in terms of recruiting.
  7. LOL. The nerve.
  8. Well, look at how slowly Shaka has moved that program. Next thing you know, he's going to be asking for a practice gym.
  9. Would any Can't State fans care to chime in? Let's just invite the entire NCAA while we're at it.
  10. If anyone said that, they're 100% wrong. Tournament victories are the result of building a strong program. It's the end result, not the starting point. However, if you can win tournament games and hold on to your head coach, you have a very good chance to sustain success. There are structural reasons for that. I've mentioned funding multiple times. But I don't see what that has to do with Akron. Our coaching situation is unique. It seems like I'm arguing with two strains of thought in this thread. One of them is getting impatient with losing in the tourney, and the other seems to be suggesting that winning in the tournament is long shot and we should quit worrying about it. Consider me the "middle ground". As DrZ very astutely pointed out, what happened to their coaches after their tournament success? If we make a sweet 16 run next season, do you think Dambrot leaves? I'm not sure, but the fact that it's even debatable means we have a very unique situation. I'm as hopeful as anyone that this program takes advantage of it
  11. Why do I think complaining and giving specifics is more productive than just complaining? Is that a serious question? 100% Agree.
  12. The X factor this off season is Harney. He has the ability to be a MAC first teamer before it's all said and done. If he can improve his ball handling, look out.
  13. So what are you suggesting? What valid complaint is there? It's not enough to just mope around and say "I want to win in the tourney or else". I think it's perfectly reasonable for zips fans to critique specific aspects of Dambrot's tenure here. The question is why haven't we won in the tournament yet? If we're going to put the blame on Dambrot, it helps to specify problem areas. Is it recruiting? In game coaching? Player Development? etc. I think everyone involved with Akron basketball is "thinking bigger". We're on the cusp of something special. Perhaps it's more productive if we identify what it is we need to do in order to accomplish our goals as a program.
  14. The MAC currently is the type of league where every 10 years or so a team gets hot and makes a run(Ken+ 2001, OU 2012). I wouldn't call it a "fluke" but it's not like national pundits considers either of those programs as perennial sweet 16/elite 8 threats. Actually, national pundits don't consider those programs in the first place. Akron is in a unique position to change that. We have a good coach who is here for the long haul and a supportive administration. No one else in the MAC has that combo. When we make it back to the tournament, I'm going to expect a win. This program needs to take the next step.
  15. Rebuttal #1: UMASS Rebuttal #2: 2-22 in 2 seasons Rebuttal #3: Mediocre A10 teams > most MAC teams
  16. As they should. Going into the season, we had the talent to do it. Thankfully, the OP asked for our opinion as fans.
  17. There's one significant difference between the A10 and the MAC. Money. The programs are better because they receive more funding. They are mostly smaller private schools with no FBS football. Edit: Which is what makes Akron's success pretty remarkable. Akron would have been the 5th or 6th best team in that conference this season.
  18. I'm sure it didn't but my point still stands. VCU seems to have taken it up a notch this season. I guarantee that their tournament success has a lot to do with their continued rise. Success breeds success.
  19. Wow, you guys must be a lot closer to the program than I am. I mean, I can read body language, but... Bentancourt can be a solid PG in this league. I don't think you can take much away from his performance last night. He's a freshman, with no legit backup, in his fourth start, against arguably the toughest press in college basketball. Give the kid a break! And you're right about his English! Hopefully he can make similar strides on the court this off season.
  20. BTW, the top 25 frequently features teams like Kansas, Pittsburgh, Indiana, etc. These aren't necessarily destination locales. 18 year olds dream about playing for Kansas for one reason-- they win. Akron needs to win on the big stage. VCU did, and look at the quality of players they recruit. One year made a big difference for them.
  21. Basketball Expenses (2010): Akron -- 1.6 Mill VCU -- 2.7 Mill Having an extra million sure helps recruiting. VCU has the advantage of not fielding a FBS football team.[please hold any jokes about Akron football ]
  22. I'm satisfied with how we have dominated the MAC over the past few seasons. I'm confident that, so long as we can hold on to Dambrot, we will continue to win MAC championships in the years to come. I'd rather win the MAC and get beat in the first round of the tournament than go to some lesser tourney. Yes, even if that means getting destroyed. We could have played in the CBI/CIT/whatever-meaningless-acronym and probably won the whole damn thing. Would that satisfy the fan base? Of course not. Even the NIT would be a let down for this program unless we made it to the MSG. I didn't feel any pressure to win in the tournament this season. Winning the MAC without our two most reliable ball handlers(AA & Q) was a pretty miraculous accomplishment. When the news came out that Walsh, Forsythe, and Deji were ill/injured, it felt like that might be the last straw. I understand some of you are frustrated with the blowout. That's understandable. Regardless, I can't think of any logical remedies to last night's beat down that don't involve long term, major, structural changes to our athletic department. I think given the resources he has Dambrot has done quite well.
  23. I'm genuinely surprised by the level of stupidity in this thread. I guess that's my problem. Go zips!
  24. With the exception of fouls, everything is going VCU's way early.
  25. I'm hearing Walsh and Forsythe are the other two.
