interesting.... Very interesting. Very, very, very interesting!!! Gee I wonder what's going to go there??????

Great to hear.... but the last thing our campus needs is MORE buildings... at least thats what I think. Im guessing such expansion would require the university to purchase more properties surrounding the campus... Campus boundaries will expand for the purpose of new buildings that won't replace old ones. So, existing green space will not shrink. In fact, green space will expand with campus enhancement. As far as old buildings being replaced. Once Memorial Hall goes, look for Zook to go and possibly Ayer and Crouse to kiss the wrecking ball soon thereafter. From the Buchtelite: "Discussions on the construction of a new education building have been ongoing for a number of years. Zook Hall, where the two departments that will be moving currently reside, is outdated and only getting worse." "It was built in the mid-'60s, so it's a very old building. It was modeled after public schools, and schools have changed radically since then," Shermis said. "It has run its course. We used to joke that it was DNR-do not resuscitate."

Hey Jake I heard this new guy is really pushing for UA to build an arena downtown off campusThen they should shoot him...out of a cannon. Fire! LOL!and in all seriousness, UA can kiss good bye any chance of filling any sports venue if they make the horrible mistake of putting their arena off campus. Also, what I am hearing from the UA movers and shakers is that the arena is going on campus. It is what Proenza and all of Buchtel Hall want to see happen.

This guy needs to be empowered to market the campus as a whole and should work directly with UA's department of institutional marketing. If UA sees marketing athletics in the macro sense that it should, there will be a much higher chance of success. Athletics is just a microcosm of the university as a whole. Marketing cannot be effective if it is done in pieces and parts. Students in general at UA are not inspired or energized (they readily wear the logos of other universities while on campus) because UA still suffers from an identity problem. Yes, there has been improvement but not enough. UA needs to make itself environmentally/visually distinct from the rest of the city so that students can have their pride lifted and feel like they belong to a real campus and not some hodge podge Cleveland Stateish look where one can't tell where the campus begins and downtown leaves off. Our sense of sight is a very strong motivator and trumps what people hear or say. This is why billboards and television are excellent mediumsThis not only lifts the pride of UA students but the community as a whole. The people of the city of Akron need to be proud of their university and to be honest they are not and make fun of it more than our rival to the east. I've heard comments out in the bars on the order of, "you don't support the Zips do you?". Akronites still see UA as silly and not a real university (Akron U) and that needs to change before anything else changes. And by the way the term, "Akron U" is not a nick name for The University of Akron. It is the worst kind of insult because it is not used out of maliciousness. It is used out of apathetic indifference for the institution. "Akron U" is another way of calling the university, "Hilltop High."Good luck to the new marketing guy. He needs our support and more importantly, the support of the board of trustees and administration at The University of Akron.

or extra blood pressure pills. I'm at my wits end! I can hardly take it.

I don't know about TV, but ESPN360 will have an internet feed shortly.

Ramsey himself is a thug. Nuts don't fall far from the tree. He taught his team everything they do.

Great game. Go Zips! Ramsey... what an ass. EMU should hang their head in shame over having such a low life coach

What Terry can't get is that no one cares about Terry. It's not about the MAC.

If "response emails" were the only metric to measure MAC fan interest, then Pluto would be correct. On ZipsNation, we have 100,000 posts to-date. Actual posts from real people who want to talk MAC...specifically The University of Akron sports.Let me repeat: 100,000!I posted a short note on the gravity of tonight's game on ZN. I got 56 responses? There are in excess of 200 posts, and thousands of views on the subject of tonight's game on ZN. Seems like there IS some interest? Just because I don't clap like a trained seal the three times per year Pluto writes something about the Zips program doesn't mean there's no interest in the program. The MAC finals will draw roughly 13,000 people to The Q. But because no one writes to Terry Pluto, there must be no interest? He needs to get off his high horse. I tired of Pluto in the late '90s. While Hipsher and Crawford were bringing Akron Basketball to it's knees, he kept writing "The Little Engine that Could" columns about the scrappy, underdog Zips. He never had the guts to call for change. And at the time, his opinion carried some weight. He fiddled while Rome burned. I can see how people in their '20s love Pluto. They're young. Wait until you're in your '40s and you've read his cookie-cutter columns 50 times. Then he isn't so awe-inspiring.I can see why senior citizens love Pluto. He's now a big religious guy. Older people eat that up.He's vanilla. I prefer writers with some sort of opinion or edge. If he's not getting responses, maybe he needs to look in the mirror rather than point fingers? You hit the nail on the head. I call him a lap dog and you call him vanilla which are the same things. When he wrote for the Beacon, he would always homogenize UA athletics. He even watered down the university status of the new stadium and stated that it "is really Akron's stadium". He played right into the hands of our local dinosaurs who blend UA into the woodwork or worse, make it invisible. He never took UA seriously because his puppeteers (the mayor being one) told him not to. He is one of the reasons why people don't take UA seriously. When he does write about UA, he always comes off like the big important man patting the little boy on his head. I always wanted to respond to his articles with: "Is this the part where we kneel down and kiss the hem of your tunic, Terry?"

Anyone need a Can't State joke this week?

Anyone need a Can't State joke this week?
Jake replied to joshgozips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
nail this idiot with his pack of lies and half truths: (Dane did a good job but he needs more)jflush07 Wrote: Let me share some things about Akron:1. They are 4th tier according to US News Rankings, same level as Cleveland State.2. They are open enrollment, means you only need a pulse to get in, Can't is one of 6 schools in the state that have high standards for enrollment, (OU, MIAMI, UC, OSU , Can't, BGSU) 3. Akron along with UC have the highest amount of debt, thanks to their "New Campus" thing. Now they have to do a $500 million campaign to pay it off.4. Akron COPIES Can't in everything, when we hired Carol Cartwright, first lady president in Ohio, Akron hired one months later to be like us, too bad theirs sucked and resigned while our president lasted 13ish years. Can't opened a research park, 2 weeks later, Akron opened one.5. Akron brags about $350 million upgrade to campus, well GUESS WHAT, Can't State is always doing at least $400 million of upgrades to campus at any given time of the year. 6. Can't State campus > Akron's campus...plain and simple.I'll have more as they come...Too bad accuracy isn't your forte. While UA is 4th tier, Can't State is 3rd tier. Not much difference. Akron is 4th tier because it is open enrollment which effects its grad rate. While Can't State has admission standards, they are a hair more than Akron's and are basically negligible. Basically, anyone can get into Can't as well. Enrollment standards at Can't can hardly be described as "high".No university, including Akron has a campaign to pay off debt. Akron made well over its 500 million in its campaign and none of it is permitted to be used to pay off debt. The campaign has been in effect for 2 years and has more than surpassed its goal. It is not one that is yet to happenAnd yes, I'm sure that Akron saw Can't State open a research center and within two weeks and much jealous fervor it got all the planning and bulldozers in line to start theirs. And your comparison between the hiring of Carol Cartwright and Peggy Elliot is as childish and off the wall as the rest of the drivel you post. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------(This post was last modified: Yesterday 07:55 PM by Dane.) Terry Pluto Says Akron vs. K.e.n.t. is Big
Jake replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Terry Pluto is a lap dog and always will be wherever he goes. He's classic Akron dinasour. -
Heaven forbid the student union allows liquor inside. Too must risk. There were also talks of putting a tanning salon in there but too much risk for that too. The Planet Underground Lounge is now open starting at 5pm each night. I encourage everyone to check it out.Too much risk? Are you being sarcastic?...im confused. The sad part is that I am not being sarcastic.Back in my day <insert old man voice> they had beer in the Student Center. No one rioted. No one died. We drank beer, ate pizza and then went on with our day/night.I hear you and back in my day as well. We had beer in the Gardner Student Center and Robertson Dining Hall. And the excuse for poor programming was the same then as it is today. "not enough $$$" to the student organization, which is no excuse. Students should demand bigger budgets. They should also demand that the university's performing arts hall (E.J) program more quality events for the students. That university facility takes most of its budget directly from student fees and uses it to feature programming to the city and not UA students. They try and cover up the crime by throwing stupid halloween parties and stage door shows which serve very few students. Let the food service department provide so-called free pizza and hot dogs to students. E.J. needs to give student big name acts that fill the 3,000 seat house. The only entity doing that now is Live Nation. There is enough money for ZIP Programming Network to put on big events. The problem is that the university gave it all to E.J. Thomas Hall so that Dan Dahl can spend it on the Akron blue hairs. Students should stage a massive protest over this blatant rip off.

If a football stadium located on the southeast end of campus can be dubbed, "downtown", then so can a multi-purpose basketball arena located just east of it. There is more than enough room especially since UA got the land where SkyWay was going to be and it won't disturb a potential Greek Village (that is if there will ever be a Greek Village). It's a win - win. UA gets a true on-campus arena and the mayor and his dinasour groupies can pretend it's downtown just like they pretend InfoCision is downtown."University of Akron approves downtown stadium POSTED: 11:19 a.m. EDT, Aug 01, 2007 The University of Akron board of trustees today approved a plan for a new football stadium, to be built on the southeast corner of campus. Drawings were unveiled at a press conference shortly before noon. The stadium would seat 25,000 to 30,000, cost about $55 million and be located a few blocks from the state Route 8 expressway exits to campus. The university will break ground for the Infocision Stadium and Summa Field in October and the facility should be ready for its first game on Sept. 12, 2009 against the University of Kentucky."Trustees named the facility in honor of the two biggest donors so far. At the request of the donors, UA officials refused to say how much they contributed to the $30 million fund-raising campaign.http://www.ohio.com/news/8850352.html

So even an ON CAMPUS stadium couldn't keepthe big bad city or it's henchmen awayMy controls>Manage Ignored Users>Type in username> problem solved. Looks like a personal problem, bandzip. Might want to get that checked by a shrink, eh?Aren't you the one that always complains about personal attacks?Perhaps I should rephrase. I'm not the one making the personal attacks. I will however respond to personal attacks in kind. Now get over me and quit obsessing.

RHPB makes a big deal about their events, but I mean they are awful...usually comedians no one has ever heard of and singers who best gig ever is at starbucks. It just makes me mad that Cleveland State can get grammy winning artists like Jay-Z and the greatest thing we can bring in is colbie caillat. We have a 5000+ arena and a 30000+ stadium that sit empty during the offseason and collect dust. I know you can't have outside concerts during the winter, but spring and fall could draw good crowds. Speaking of resident halls I just found out today that the new Spicer dorms are only going to be open to freshman in learning communities? Okay first of all why do freshman get the best and newest living conditions? It's not fair to discriminate against us students who deserve to live there. Looks like 4th year at the gooch is coming up!Funny, RHPB has always crowed about their corny events and as always they suck big time. That organization has had its poor reputation since the early '70s. Some things never change. They are so high school it is nauseatingAlso, I heard that the Spicer dorms were going to be reserved for students in athletics and not Freshmen. Something tells me we are both hearing unfounded rumors. And, I agree UA needs more late night spots on the campus. It needs its own operating bar(s) and at least one restaurant to be more student/user friendly. Many parents are reluctant about their kids going off campus for their entertainment. A nice place for food and drinks is in order for patrons after an evening at UA's E.J. I would much rather patronize an on-campus restaurant over an off-campus one after an event at E.J. or InfoCision. On-campus options are a must for those who want to take advantage of them. It would certainly give UA the residential atmosphere it is seeking.

Thanks. I'll look for my info in the mail

Thanks.I have to admit, it was nice to enjoy my bourban and soda in the club level. I hope they do expand the area where alcohol is served this coming season for the sake of students who want to drink. They are allowed to drink elswhere on campus such as in E.J. Thomas so why not the stadium?
-
Amen to that!

I got the survey and I was happy to give my input. I am a club seat holder and I was for the most part pleased to say that I was very satisfied with my experience with parking and overall service. My only objection, and it is a strong one, is that the Akron City Police People were very rude, hostile and even tried to provoke a fight with several patrons. I have to say they didn't try it with me but I saw their behavior with other patrons who paid high prices for club, lodge and suite seats and these guys were loaded for bear. It was as if the APD wanted to make UA's efforts to have a nice stadium and atmosphere turn into a hostile environment. The APD was out to get people and to start fights.

Thanks Dr Z. Let's hope Robin continues to do a more thorough coverage of The University of Akron and features E.J. Thomas and Guzetta Halls as well as the Law School, InfoCision Stadium, the new dorms being constructed around the stadium and the proposed new on-campus (and not off-campus downtown) multi-purpose arena just east of InfoCision Stadium/Summa Field. We have a great and will have an even greater university and campus and l hope the media keeps us in the forefront of our progress.

urbanpreppie (aka: self-annointed public relations expert)- what wall are you bouncing off of with your verbal slight-of-hand?Nowhere have I advocated divorcing UA from Akron. To claim I have, is inaccurate if not dishonest. Also G-mann17, I realize that The University of Cincinatti is referred to as "Cincinnati" and that The University of Michigan is referred to as "Michigan" just as I realize that The University of Akron is referred to as "Akron"...no problem with any of that. Someone is missing the point, redefining my statements and is skewed himself. The point is, those universities are never referred to in an incorrect manner such as Cincinnati U or Michigan U. And this just in: The University of Notre Dame can be and almost always is referred to as "Notre Dame" yet never "Notre Dame U".And, as far as my means are concerned, just what do you think are my means and what is it with this cliché and contrived entity someone has dubbed as "Joe Akron"? I really don't put a whole lot of stock in appeasing an entity who's existence is questionable at best. There is nothing wrong and everything right with UA having healthy, visible boundaries and separating itself enough to have a visual identity ( see InfoCision Stadium). By doing so UA isn't divorcing itself from the rest of the city. To the contrary, it enhances the city. So, my means are no different than the means UA and other respected universities are already using. And why we are on the subject of my means, I'd like to suggest that to focus on my approach instead of the meat of the matter is nothing more than a dishonest way to avoid the truth and the real issue. It is what people do when they can't win the argument...instead, they focus on the emotional at the expense of the intellectual. It would be best if you not try to become my or anyone else's mommy. This is a forum that is clearly open to the blunt and the brazen. So please spare us your preoccupation with your false thin skin as a dishonest means to wiggle out of being exposed for having a contaminated, wrong thinking process.Perhaps someone needs to make himself aware of the difference between boundaries and walls and not jump to conclusions. I'm talking boundaries and not walls. Working closely and in partnership with the greater Akron community and region and not just with downtown is an asset about the university that I support and have never ridiculed. So don't put words in my mouth please. My concern is with those who demand that UA become enmeshed with downtown as opposed to working closely with the entire community and region. And like it or not, the so-called Joe Akrons of the world are going to have to stop being in denial of the fact that The University of Akron is no longer Hilltop High, Akron U. and more importantly, not a community college. If there is a "Joe Akron" as someone insists, then good old Joe will just be left out in the cold if he chooses to blind himself to the fact that we now have a university that is about more than Akron, Ohio just as Ken+ State is about more then Ken+, Ohio and Ohio State is about more than Columbus, Ohio.As the old Florida Orange Juice commercial goes: "We're not just for breakfast anymore."You can't have it both ways. If you want UA to be recognized as real and legitimate, then you must support its efforts to behave in ways that makes it distinguishable. Otherwise, don't complain when you perceive entities such as the ABJ treating UA as invisible or get pissed off when the locals elevate other schools at the expense of UA.And by the way, the individual and corporate contributors of The University of Akron can hardly be described as "Joe Akron" that is if there is such an entity having influence in the first place. And let me clarify that the desire of those within the University of Akron community and Akron community (aka: "Joe Akron" if you insist) to construct an on-campus arena as opposed to a downtown one is not rooted in emotion. Just like the quest for an on-campus stadium, it is a strategic and tactical position aimed at the OBJECTIVE of attracting more students to the campus and the GOAL of building up the global image of The University of Akron. This in turn will enhance the greater Akron community, county, region and state. So, please do not redefine UA's efforts to become a great university as some sort of emotional whim. Now, will someone tell Joe Akron (UA David) to get his parochial, downtown diaper changed and learn to think regionally. That dog known as the "downtown Akron rant" just don't hunt no more!Oh, and by the way... thanks for the instructions on how to ignore a particular poster. I'm finding that it works out just fine.
