Game 1: Zips @ Youngstown State - 11/12
wadszip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Watching this Kent-Cleveland State game and man is Cleveland State pathetic. Freshman Mitch Peterson of Walsh Jesuit looks real good, though, for Kent. -
I'm still partial to 2003, but this year's WRs are the best the school has had. But it doesn't matter with this defense, which may have just given up the worst TD I have ever seen. First, the guy is open by 15 yards. Second, he bobbles it and barley holds on. 3. It didn't matter as he still ended up running past two defenders for an untouched TD, smh
-
I know the iCoach teams were just abysmal, but is this defense worse than any of his teams? Overall, this version is slightly better since they have some semblance of an offense, but defensively, this is historically bad.
-
Figured nothing could be worse than this Indians game. Then I flip over to this and quickly changed my mind.
-
Akron won't win another game, so it doesn't matter. This team is as bad as any of the other dog crap teams in the MAC East.

Man, I have so much disgust about this football program right now I want to rant. But I'll cool off before I really go off on it. But I will say, I'm starting to be on the side of people that believe that Info was a waste of eff'n money and those funds should've been invested toward programs that actually could do something with it.... IE basketball.

From the looks of this, good thing most of us can't watch it. 5-7 here we come!

I just tried Kodi and it's still giving me "this game is blacked out in your area"
-
Appreciate the response ... and Zach too. I'll have to look into that.

Since there has been some tech discussions on here, maybe somebody could help me out (starting to feel old being out of touch with some of the new technology). Long story short, I want to cancel my cable because all I use it for now is sports, especially since me and the wife just got a firestick and can watch essentially everything else, sans sports, with it. The only reason I'm keeping cable for now is due to having to my account to log onto ESPN3 (Zips football/basketball) and the Fox Sports app (Cavs). Does anybody know if those apps are still available if you only have internet service? Or is that on a provider-by-provider basis? Those two apps (and I stream 80 percent of that stuff anyway instead of actually watching on actual cable) is why I haven't dumped it yet because I have to enter my cable information to get it. Luckily, I live in Wadsworth that has its own city-owned cable company that is pretty "inexpensive," but that would still be a $50 or so savings per month if I could just keep the internet portion and still have access to the apps I stream through my City Link (Wadsworth's cable/internet provider) account.

I'm guessing they are treating the bowl matchups like the bracketologists treat the MAC in basketball, they are treating WMU as No. 1 and in Mobile. Since Akron is tied for the East lead they are assuming they are the No. 2 team and slotting them in Miami. But the bowls get to pick and I doubt the Miami Beach bowl passes on Toledo. Like Kreed said, it's too early to try to guess who goes where. The only thing I think is certain is that if Akron makes the MAC title game, it will not be heading back to Boise. All the other spots look good to me as far as location as they would likely go South, or maybe to San Diego.

Wow, never put it together until that photo that Justin Sampson is Jakarr Sampson's younger brother. Man, they are mirror images of each other, facially. Jakarr has the height advantage, but Justin already looks to have the bigger build.

2017 Commit: RB/LB Marquise Bridges
wadszip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Over the past 12 years, Summit County has produced a ton of RB talent. Off the top of my head: Tyrell Sutton, Hoban: Northwestern, NFL (Mr. Football) Beanie Wells, Garfield: Ohio State, NFL Antonio Pittman, Buchtel: Ohio State, NFL Delone Carter, Copley: Syracuse, NFL (Mr. Football) Bryan Williams, Buchtel: Akron Jordan Mabin, Nordonia: Northwestern, NFL rosters (Mabin played DB in college but was/still is one of the all-time leading rushers in OHSAA history) Tyson Gulley, Garfield: Syracuse Aregeros Turner, Copley: Northern Illinois Vince Lockett, St. Vincent-St. Mary: Akron (Was a RB in high school) Add in the five this year and that's at least 12 FBS running backs since Sutton graduated in 2004 (14 if you count Mabin and Lockett), and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple. BTW, I've talked to a couple people who follow Summit County football way more than I do who have said Marquise Bridges is the best of the bunch this year ... even above the Pitt-bound Sibley or Michigan State-bound Bridges.- 35 replies

Great effort Zips! We're just about 150 yards, two dumb turnover and two touchdowns away from playing a respectable half!
-
I know the Zips got out of a hole last week, but no signs that there will be a repeat this week so far.
-
So, that makes five in the NFL, right? 1. March 2. Pughsley 3. Brown 4. Capi 5. Coe Yeah, it's not Ohio State, but having five players in the last three years land at least $400,000 a year salaries on an NFL roster has to hold some weight. And if those guys stick, I'm sure a couple more will be added next year.
-
And Kansas may only be the second worst team in the Big 12 (Iowa State). Virginia also likely would finish in the bottom two or three of the MAC, so game Central Michigan should win easily if they are as good as what people think they are.
-
To get this back on track. Not good at all. Screw it, might as well just go Texas Tech in the Mike Leach days and throw it 50 times a game. The Oline has been solid in pass protection.

I'm not sure why this is a big deal (nor am I sure why I'm defending a Marshall writer from an article in July. I didn't realize how old that post was.) But it's not wrong. Like I said, it's more of a technicality than anything. But yes, Akron at one point was considered major. Then went down to DIII, then up to DII, then up DI-AA. Then "decided" to go back up to major status (DI-A ... FBS). Here's another technicality, while Akron has been a "major" program for 30 something years, really, it's only year four of the latest version of being major, since Bowden inherited a team that only had something like 59 scholarship players his first year.

The last time Akron had any sort of D1-A (FBS) success, it was on the backs of local recruits under Lee Owens. There was a stretch from 1999-2005 where the team had winning seasons in five of seven years. ... the last two being seasons where Brookhart lived off Owens' local kids. Brookhart then turned back-to-back No. 1 MAC recruiting classes (with kids being recruited by the schools you mentioned) back to the basement. It's not the local talent base, it's the coaching. TB has a track record of winning, so lets see where this (and continuing to get P5 transfers) takes us. Still, if you are going to go after HS kids in NEO, why not Summit County? It's the one major county in the region that actually is growing, and the HS football has been making major strides in the past decade. I'd say it has easily surpassed Mahoning and Stark counties (two of the historical hotbeds) and is quickly gaining on Cuyahoga. Look at some of the HS ball being played here. St. V has won two state titles in D3 and made another finals appearance in the past 5 years (with teams that probably could've competed for the D1 title). Hoban, also D3, won it all last year, and is probably the favorite to win it again this year (just took two-time defending D1 champ St. Edward down to the wire last week, 10-7). In Division II, Nordonia just went to the state finals two years ago. Hudson, in D1 two years ago (with wins over St. Ignatius and Mentor) and in D2 last year, made the final four. Stow, last year, made the D1 final four. This year, looks like they could make it back (with a QB UA is recruiting). The City Series, while not having any elite teams any more, probably is the best city league in Ohio. ... The Cleveland Senate sucks outside of Glenville. Toledo sucks. Cincinnati pretty much sucks. Columbus has a couple good teams ... out what 12? Dayton is OK now that it only has like 3 teams. ... The City Series usually has four teams that can somewhat compete with the suburban/private counterparts ... Buchtel/Ellet then usually two of Firestone/East/Garfield ... with only North and Kenmore being dead weight. That will likely change, too, starting in the next couple of years when the city goes from 7 schools to 5. ... It'll be the same number of athletes, just at less schools. That should lead to an even better on-field performance from the remaining city teams. Look at Buchtel. They are 0-3 but lost by 6 to Beechcroft (which I'm guessing is one of the non-shitty Columbus city teams since they are 3-0). Then lost by 7 to Benedictine (a team that won back-to-back state titles in 2013-14); and then by one to Canton GlenOak ... a perennial D1 playoff team that is 2-1 with a win over one of the best big-school teams in Virginia (a state everybody is gawking over in recruiting) and then a 3-point loss to a historically good program in Massillon. Buchtel is probably a couple extra good players (which they could get in two years ... if they don't go to St. V or Hoban) away from potentially being 3-0 against three solid/very good teams. With all that said, even if you focus on Summit, that doesn't preclude you from going to the nearby counties ... Stark/Cuyahoga/Mahoning/Lorain/Lake to get recruits either. Outside of Stark, all are a tougher sell now, but easier if you continue to win ... and then maybe.

Losing Ball is a death knell to this season. Lets hope that isn't true. This team has no running threat without him (unless you want to start running 10-plus jet sweeps a game with Natson and then watch him go out for the year).
-
Pretty much. IMO, it's much ado about nothing, but it's not really an error. The program ... like schools that have been around for 100 years like Marshall, UMass, Connecticut, Middle Tennessee, etc., did decide to "rejoin" at some point. Schools like South Florida, Central Florida, Boise, etc., never "rejoined" because they didn't have football in the pre division era. It's a technicality, though, I'd tend to agree with the Marshall writer. For what ever reason, Akron decided to drop down when divisions came about, then decided to move back up from 1-AA in 1987.
-
It's a technicality, but Akron was considered "major" way back in the day. ... along with just about any school that had football pre WWII. So, while they never exactly rejoined D1-A, they did move back up to "major" status in 1987. ... After all, who can forget that glorious undefeated 1894 season ... 1-0 with a victory over Ohio State!
