Super-conference discussion (Akron specific)
Flash replied to LZIp's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I'm gonna have to agree with everyone and say Akron (as well as K.S.U.) will be staying put. Lets be honest, our schools would have to go on an absolute tear with football or basketball. We both already have good b-ball programs but that's still not elevating us to a different conference yet. Our traditions, expertise, and rivalries are in the MAC. This conference can be exciting in football again if we all made Saturday afternoons "a big event" again, like the B1G and, heck, even the Big East do. Thoughts? -
I think they should rename the M.A.C. Center as "the springboard". I don't even know how the program stays at the level they do while these others schools keep plucking our coaches.
-
Take it easy Captain, breath. For some reason I thought it was unique and the intern and I were just joking around, nobody was ganging up on anyone else. This was a conversation post.
-
the eagle is Flashes 2.0 and I suppose you could ask Iowa State the same question as to why our birds have teeth. Rare.
-
Great question, the history has many twist and turns. The name was first suggested in the 1920's by students, it replaced the animal that an early Can't State president raised on his farm...Silver Foxes. The Flash was represented by many things like a Golden Retriever, a Thor-like man with lightening bolts in his hands riding a noble steed. Then in 1985, the Golden Eagle flew in for the rescue. Boston College athletics, at the time, were called the "Golden Eagles" and instead of a name change K.e.nt decided to retain the original name with an appropriate mascot. Since that time, the golden eagle has been the official bird mascot of the "Golden Flashes"

Thats the way of it. I just surprised me because of its uncommon nature.

Well I'll be damned.. A nice intern (an Akron undergrad) in our office by the name of Rebecca actually took time this afternoon to research and tell me where the "Zips" team name actually originated. Our discussion started as one the typical "What's a Zip?" "Whats a Flash?" kind of teasing until we both had to do research to figure out how our respective universities settled on, lets face it, not so common mascots. If any die-hard on this board knows the TRUE origination of the Zips name I'll be duly impressed.

Can't State and Akron now in Horizon League
Flash replied to Zipmeister's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You think that's bad? Sports Illustrated came out with their NCAAB preview two years ago the referred us as the "K.e.nt Zips" I immediatly tossed it back on the shelf -
Both of our fan-bases may grind our teeth and put on a sh*t eating grin as we painfully wish each other well...we both know that is a lie. Secretly we're both hoping the other trips up. BUT... The fact remains that whether we like it or not, the M.A.C. needs to stick together and hope for a good conference showing. (Yes, that goes for both Portage and Summit county) Here's to making waves in tourney season. <-- Lets show 'em we're anything but "mid-major"
-
Congratulations and good luck in the tournament Make the MAC proud and give Notre Dame (maybe?) a run for their money. See you next year. The better you get, the better we get.

K.e.n.t State -- bad stadium Akron -- even worse team ...Call it a draw, at least we can fill our "sh*thole" stadium
-
Fixed my hasty (and embarrassing) spelling mistake, now i'm just going to do what Washington does by denying it and pretending it never happened. Lest we forget the Akron student section once mispelled "Throw" by spelling "TH_OW" on a giant banner. PROOF -----> http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/gr...gid=11279643708

I know i'm going to crucified for this but... Enjoy, Zips http://www.flickr.com/photos/29743439@N07/...ith/5066191891/

We'll be having our Wheel back this Saturday, thank you Don't blow a gasket, I'm just stoking the coals of a heated rivalry.
-
We fans in the MAC can solve attendance issues by ignoring the footprint of the conference we're in, the Big Ten Conference. Lets try and forget about the Buckeyes game (even though this is Ohio) and do what the other 1-AA schools do. The smaller FCS schools just say "Who cares if we're not one of the 'Big Boys' of college ball, we're gonna pack the stadium for our games and scream our asses off like we're playing in the Rose Bowl" MAC football can be great but our athletes need the support to get up for big games. Start getting the mentality that MAC schools dont just go to BCS opponents stadiums for an ass-whooping and a big check...they go to play...and win. This is something K.e.n.t and Akron fans can both agree with.
-
Of course Zips fans are glad K.e.n.t was upset, how else do you think Akron is going to win the tournament? You won it last year and you'll probably win it this year but you'll never get it going through us.I was in that section talking all that trash, I'd probably do it again. We'll enjoy the NIT...just remember, only one of us knows for certain our team is going to a post season bracket at this point. Let's Go F.lashes, 2-0 this season and regular season
-
Alright, if Akron doesn't win the tournament now something is wrong with them because the door is now WIDE open. Ohio stunned the F.lashes in the biggest upset of the tourny. The MAC Championship has just been handed to Akron on a silver platter.Best of luck!

MAJOR props for the way Akron honored Laing Kennedy, I was very taken back...in a good way of course.I just wanted to address the 1% that didn't behave as "good fans" last Friday night. As a K.e.n.t. fan I only ask that the May 4th shootings be untouched when you guys want to "bash the f.lashes." I know its a rivalry what seriously, young people died speaking their mind...is that really something to joke about??In return, start naming things we as K.e.n.t. fans can do better and we'll hopefully refrain from that behavior. Hopefully good sportsmanship can start creeping its way back in to this heated rivalry of ours...our side could use more of it as well.BTW - I was treated well at the game for the most part, thank you. I have spoken my peace.

I go to Can't games on occassion with some unenlightened Can't State friends. The only time their student section is filled is for the Akron game.Na, both student sections were filled last weekend when Miami was in town, same with the ESPN Bracket Busters night. I will admit though that Wednesday games are not quite as packed as weekend matches. They really need to expand student seating in the JAR. The one side below the scoreboard is WAAAAY too small for a student section to affect the outcome of a game (K.S.U. game excluded). I know the MAC Center is soon going to be gutted to have a bowl-like seating arrangement around the court, perhaps Akron should think about doing the same.
-
Whatever you need to tell yourselves....
-
So the game started at 7:00......so when did Buffalo show up?
-
Trust me, I'm happier than anyone that no one has touched that one. As for the other comments, what a awful thing to say
-
Hahaha trust me, there isn't anyone happier than me that nobody has touched that one.
-
Well i guess one of them can write.Yea, now we're talking. I'm still surprised someone hasn't pronouncing "K e n t" as the C-word. Probably giving too many ideas though.
-
I'm here to set the record straight and defend K E N T's honor1. Our student section far from sucks, we fill up 2 large sections directly behind both hoops (Zips fans who have been to the M.A.C. Center can attest this, don't try and say otherwise)2. Yea, I'm sure you'll all hate me just for being here3. What the "rowdies" section needs is to have longer pull out bleachers. I was stunned the first time at the JAR when I saw the limited space they give students.4. You have us beat on organized group, that still hasn't stopped many factions in our student section from getting together and being pretty creative.I offer constructive criticism...though I'm not sure what to expect.
