Keeping up with the Three D's (Dambrot, Dru & Duquesne)
Doug Snyder replied to dirtyolcrowe's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
There are many Akron fans who follow and support you father. Many don't post here anymore or can't post here. Don't use this forum as a measure of how much your father was appreciated. He is an Akron alumni, played at Akron and coached at Akron....he sent his kids to Akron and parents were employees of Akron. He is a true Akron Zip and always will be. Even though he is now at Duquesne, like many...I am rooting for him and the other Akron alumni on his staff. Here some facts to think about: (source Pomeroy rankings...average ranking of opposition) Akron 2016/17 (29-9, 28-8 w/o post season) OOC home games 274 OOC All games 194 OOC win games 234 Akron 2019/2020 (14-4) OOC home games 308 OOC All games 212 OOC win games 269 Duquesne 2019/2020 (15-2) OOC home games 253 OOC All games 199 OOC win games 206 Groce must be baking a more palatable brand of cupcake. So....it does does not appear that Groce and Akron are scheduling any better than KD. Keep in mind that Duq has had only 5 OOC home games due to arena renovation. Also...Pomeroy has Akron at 65 and Duquesne at 80 so it looks as if a weak schedule is not holding back Akron. The MAC is way down this year and Akron has a good team....they should go dancing this year. KD left because he could not get in to the NCAA Dance unless he won the MAC tournament. That is hard to do...upsets are common. Here are some stats from the A10: - Since 1982, 46 A-10 teams have entered the conference tournament with less than seven losses. All 46 made the NCAA tournament - In the history of the conference (including the Eastern 8), 38 teams have gone to Selection Sunday with at least 25 wins. All 38 made the NCAA tournament. By the way....the same people criticizing KD also criticize AD Williams. Williams hired the Embick and Groce. Although Arth has not yet proven to be a good hire...he should get credit for cutting ties with TB. Go Zips!! Go Groce!!! Go KD!!! (I post every 10 years....see you next decade ) -
Proenza's Ego is Killing Towson Football
Doug Snyder replied to ZipperRoo44's topic in Akron Zips Football
I feel UA is the one with the chip on it's shoulder. If we really wanted to earn Winters favor, we would have sent Proenza. We would have shown him we were dead serious. Especially after dissing the guy twice before. But we didn't. The Wayne State AD and President showed the guy some love instead. And we still have no football coach. And it is December 22nd. For a guy who did not want Winters...I would think you would be happy. Don't lie about me on this board. I never said I did not want Winters. In fact I said he was an excellent candidate. Here. I have no time to deal with liars. The next time you reply to one of my posts, any post, you will be banned permanently. Have at it...ban me. -

The first meeting should have been as soon as possible after Winters season ended to guage his interest. Since TW and at least one other search member made the trip...it should have signaled to Paul that we were serious. I was told that a contract was definitely not offered...just parameters of a deal. Who knows who to believe. One thing for certain...the negative honks on this site will hammer whoever is available. It appears TW nd Dr. P handled this correctly. Hopefully Paul will send out a clarification because all this speculation is not good for him or the UofA. He did not take any shots at anyone in his letter to the football alumni...but so many read into what was not said. He did not say that he was not running for President either...so maybe we will have a new candidate soon. -
Well, this is going to sting a bit... Loeffler saying no..
Doug Snyder replied to ImAZipFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
How about if you were told about JuCo and other committments you had no hand in picking, evaluating, recruiting, and were told who on the current staff you had to retain? Wouldn't common sense tell you if that's the case then the 2 year plan needs to be extended? Just saying. I really don't want to pick this apart, Paul's still dealing with quite a bit of emotion from quite a few things, but as I said before, he wasn't offered a great deal and said, "That's a great deal, no thanks." If Akron wanted him they should have been willing to match the WSU offer, they didn't. I'm signing off before any more points need counterpoints. I agree Paul's not 100% blameless, he probably should have been better prepared for the insults. Someone else posted on another thread how TW should start off with an apology... not so much. It couldn't have been a comfortable, friendly, safe exchange. Who would want to come to work (and do THAT job) in an atmosphere like that without some level of safety equal to what he would be leaving? You are making more out of this than it is. I am sure Winters would want some recruits...and only 7-9 have been listed. That would NOT be a hindrance. And what coaches would he have to retain?? There is only ONE left. So...this looks like Paul (or you) looking for reasons why he did not want to come. He had a good job and liked where he was....that is good enough for me. All of these other excuses are lame. Most coaches travel to the school for an interview. TW made the trip...that should show that he was serious. If he needed more money or a better guarantee...he could have negotiated for that. But when you are listing "recruits" and "staff that must be retained" you, and he, lose me. I hope these are your words and Paul’s....because I have always respected Paul and would hate to lose some of that respect over an issue where the University was trying to bring him home. One other thing about the recruits. Are you suggesting that Paul wanted the UofA to renege of commitments to the 7 recruits?? Sorry…this is not making TW look bad…but Paul Winters. I hope this is not true. -
He was probably just listening to Frenchy and Dunn. What problem I had was he had a hat on as well. He clearly did not look like a professional. It's not a huge deal but I would have liked him to show some respect towards his teammates and the program. A hat as well? Well, that settles it....someone call the cops. How is listening to music and wearing a hat not respectful to his teammates? Yikes, did it turn into the 1950s in here again? On top of it all, he was wearing neither a tie nor a sportcoat. In all seriousness, slightly older folks are generally dismayed at how casual our society has become. I don't think it's either here nor there, but I see this attitude in church as well. The younger folks dress very casually, whereas the older folks still dress-to-kill; of course they say they're just showing respect to the Lord by dressing to the nines. It's a generational thing. I seriously doubt Harney was intending any sort of disrespect in sporting an iPod & hat. I was just happy to see he could hold the baskeltbal with 2 hands and his pants did not fall down. My standards have dropped quite a bit in this area. It seemed that Harney was trying not to be noticed. He did not come off as disrespectful. From my perspective...he seems like a good kid.

In Monday's game he had at least one move where he finished with his left hand, and it wasn't a gimme type shot. It was smooth. The dude is a beast. Good to know
-
I did not mean to imply that you did. Just that how ironic it would be that our lowest day in football turned out to have a silver lining that also caused our happiest day in football. Life...it can really surprise you at times.
-
I doubt that Tressel will come here. They talked already and he was not interested. But if it did...it would be because we waited for PW long enough for the NCAA sancions to be announced. So...maybe there will be a silver lining in this whole PW episode. Would be a nice Christmas present.

If Tree wants to become an elite player...he needs to turn up the intensity in practice...and spend lots of extra time shooting free throws. Also...he almost always shoots with his right hand. That will become a problem down the road. He needs to learn to use his left hand. But...he is very young and inexperianced. It will be fun to watch him grow. Unlike Zeke...he is a power player wo looks to score.
-
the only thing I see that he needs to fix is he often moves his hips on picks...that will cause a lot of ticky tack fouls. Get in position...don't move the hips. I think he is getting adept at shooting with either hand. he will be a monster next year.
-
To be honest...my biggest fear is that Egner will lose interest sitting on the bench. We have a very small group of front court players and cannot afford to lose someone with Egners potential. He is a team player and has played the role of defensive stopper his whole career. Next year we will have Zeke, a more mature Tree and maybe Harney who can play "big". We NEED Egner to step up and reach his potential as all the others will need the ball and look to score. If Egner can play above his height and assume the defensive stopper role, we will be a really strong team. If he loses interest...I fear he may transfer to a smaller school to start. I can picture he an Henniger regrouping at Walsh or another school and being the stars. We need Egner to grow and polish his game. He can be a valuable force inside for the Zips if he does.
-
Bardo was not athletic. Egner is.
-
You would lose CP for sure and Dambrot would not be a happy camper
-
He is 6'7" and 215 lbs. He is backing up Zeke...so he will always be overmatched physically. His game is defense...he is not an accomplished offensive player...maybe never will be. But he needs to play 5 minutes or so every game to get more experiance as he will be needed next year in a big way. Hopefully he adds 10 or more lbs and improves over the summer. Next year he will back up Zeke and Tree and probably be playing 15-20 minutes a game.

PD Reports that Winters is staying at Wayne State
Doug Snyder replied to Kangaroo Craig's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yea...there are a lot of frayed nerves right now. You are definitely NOT a basher, flame thrower or negative sarcasm. I think G-Mann is just misreading and overly sensitive, You both are 2 of the guys I respect most. Shitty day...I am worried more to come. I have little patience for the bashers, flame throwers and negative sarcasm right now. Go Zips -
Maybe Proenza deserves some blame for this as well. It's easy to see in retrospect that TW is an albatross in this process. Probably should have canned him first and relied on a UA search team. Absolutely, Wistrcill is the albatross. Who in their right mind would want to work for this guy?? Winters no doubt looked at him, then looked over at the highly-respected and class act Rob Fournier...and said: Boys, you wasted your gas money on this trip. Proenza is culpable, in that HE ALONE wanted Tom Wistrcill here. The selection committee for the AD did NOT. I have that on first-hand authority. Therefore, Proenza and Wistrcill SHARE the blame in this entire fiasco. They'd better pull a rabbit out of their collective butts on this one, or both of their heads should roll. Time to let someone with some athletic expertise take charge. Yea...any serious alumni is going to look around campus and say "let's take that ZipRoo's advice and fire Proenza". Keep posting. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn eventually.

+1 Ask Treadwell at Miami. Passed over twice for hs dream job at his alma mater. He said yes without hesitation. He and Bates have a great relationship.
-
LOL You want them to be competitive for all 4 quarters at Michigan in 2013?? We are talking American football and not Futbol right??? Other than that...it is a reasonable expectation
-
Something blew up in the program during the Miami game. I have no idea what, but the whole attitude around the team changed the week following CMU. But you could tell there was a loss of faith in the coaching from the players. Maybe GP1 is right and the whole lot of them should be giving walking orders, but the right coach can come in here and get wins right away. I'm not saying championships (we don't have that kind of talent on the team just yet) but no reason these guys cant win 6 games considering the conference we play in. It would be nice if they would win 6. That would be an 6-4 record not including the "pay for beating" games. I think we should expect to win 3 games and keep expectations realistic. As it is...the new HC must find lots of competent OL and DL to even be competitive. Plus...I think the MA is on the upswing. We will ge a better feel after this year's bowl games.
-
Who would you say was the better coach... A guy who went 5 years of 9-3 at Minnesota or a guy who went 9-3 at OSU?? Perspective...not much here today.

Paul Winters Overall Record (Wayne State)
Doug Snyder replied to afootball's topic in Akron Zips Football
YES Winters is who we want. It is a bit weird that you show up now. So it makes me think you are an existing board member under a new name...a Loefler freind or family member drumming up support...or someone from the administration testing the waters because they decided to go in another direction (highly doubt this last one). In any case...the suspense will not last long. The new HC will be announced within 2 days and I suspect we will see the last of your name here. -
For over 2 years we have read how iCoach has set the program back 5 years or more. That the team has no talent and Ianello was a poor recruiter as well as a poor coach. Now...I am not defending Ianello. But if those observations are correct...then there is absolutely no reason why we would win many games next year. New head coach, new coaches, new systems...will take some time and well as the stated lack of talent. So...my objective is that we should take a deep breath and look at things rationally and GIVE THE NEW COACH SOME TIME AND PATIENCE. And more importantly...some support.
-
]It never ceases to amaze me how some people conveniently use facts. "iCoach set the program back 5 years". Now?? They should be able to win within a few years (or sooner!!). LOL Simply amazing. First, I don't recall ever making that prediction. Either of them. Secondly, what does that even have to do with my thoughts on the gap between the good and bad teams in the MAC? You often appear to be very quick to jump on people around here without checking what you are talking about. What is your objective? Sorry Skip. I was not targeting you...but the board in general. I should have deleted your reference on the post. I can understand why you thought I was inferring it was you who made those comments. You have my apology. Other than your irrational hatred for OSU, I really value your posts.

I agree with G-Mann. This is the first time they have been plaing this late in the year. School is already out and their fellow students are already at home. It is best for the players to get this done and get them home for the Christmas break. The timing though....will be convenient for us.

Paul Winters / Wayne State Title Game Thread

or the crucial 26 yard punt for Mount Union.
