  1. Caleb Porter had some of the same issues this year. With lots of new players you will get some growing pains as everyone learns to play within the system and the coach learns who plays well with each other. I expect some to be dissatisfied with their playing time too. KD now has 11 guys he needs to get minutes for...I don't envy KDs situation.
  2. +1. Additionally, with Campbell being a Mount guy, I'm sure he also understands defense. MUC almost always has an incredible defense. Howevrer, most people don't know it because MUC's defense is always overshadowed by their even more incredible offense. Buuuuut, you've got to have the horses to plow the field. The first couple (few?) of years are going to be tough no matter who gets the job. Not a "dark horse" anymore?? I like him...but I worry about his ability to build a staff and function as a HC. Will be lots of on the job learning and there will be some mistakes. I am not sure the Akron fan base has an appetite right now for the "patience" part that will be required.
  3. Point taken, and it looks like they took a slight step back in that regards with Beck in charge in 2011. It's Martinez who is pretty imaginative If we're looking for a coordinator who will (eventually) score lots of points, put an exciting team on the field, and (hopefully) put people in the Info, I still like Campbell the best of the names I've seen so far. I like Campbell too. But he is very young and it is doubtful that he would have a list of contacts to put together a great staff. Who ever gets Campbell will put in a year or two while he gets up to speed. Any first year head coach will be learning on the job. I am not sure we have the patience for that at this time. The guys I think are ready for the job are: 1. Pat Hill 2. Paul Winters 3. Chuck Martin The next group of guys with potential (possibly more than the first group) are: 1. Matt Campbell 2. Mike Bajakian I am sure there will be more names come up...I am open to someone I have never heard of.
  4. Like him. An Akron kind of coach. Like him too. I like the names that are popping up. they are looking on the offensive side of the ball and seem to be looking with someone with roots in either the MAC or Ohio....or both
  5. Based on what I know; gczip22 probably has the most accurate "read" on the situation. It is time to stop the rumors, guessing, second guessing and fear mongering. Coach Dambrot has enough on his plate without ZipsNation kin back biting him. Good news is that Tree might play Saturday. No guarantees on this; just a hunch. Hunch: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hunch noun 5. a premonition or suspicion; guess Sorry GoZips... it was there...had to take it I get what you mean though...let's leave this issue die. It serves no ones best interest. If RootForRoo44 still has an issue...he can discuss it in person with the GA. Both will be better for it and hopefully both will learn from it. Go Zips!!!
  6. Would you want really want him to agree with you that there's no pride/leadership? And how exactly does a member of their staff defending their players mean that this team is in big trouble? C'mon now...listen - go here (http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?showtopic=24982), take a few deep breaths, and relax. No, my biggest issue is that this defense of the team was the biggest showing of team pride that i've seen all year....and it came from a grad assistant. And disagreeing is one thing, writing an essay on why i'm an asshole is ridiculous. I just think it's a good example of where this team is as a unit. Someone needs to man up and take responsibility. And trust me, i'm very calm and relaxed. I have plenty of faith in Keith Dambrot getting these guys ready eventually. Problem is, if we keep tanking it and don't figure it out sooner rather than later, we can say 'bye-bye' to the first round bye in the MAC tourney. I know I know, "we've been in this situation before"...not exactly. This team is different from the other early season slumps. These guys are losing the ENTIRE game, not just for stretches of each game. They are being out-hustled and out-played by teams on equal or lower talent levels. I can handle a team losing with some effort, i can't respect a team that goes down with a whimper and beats themselves. I already had to watch a team this fall do that for 12 games. Well.. technically 11 Don't out the guy but send the letter to KD. The grad assistants are there to learn and this may be a learning experiance for him. If KD is not aware of the letter...no learning will take place. Just my opinion...
  7. Donations from people who want to see this program succeed. Why do you believe that the athletic department is a closed system that can only spend what it makes in ticket sales? LOL Other peoples money
  8. For the rest of us, the game will be shown online on ESPN3. If you're like me and your internet provider doesn't cooperate with ESPN3, I believe the NCAA sight will once again be streaming the game. Just click on the appropriate game in the bracket. Puckers in North Canton on Cleveland Ave. has ESPN3 and will show the game if you ask.
  9. There are obviously some red flags regarding Pat Hill. But he had FRESNO rated as high as #8. He is worth a taking a look and kicking the tires. CK and others may be right...he has lost the fire in the belly to compete. Maybe there are other issues...California schools have come under extreme budgetary pressure as the state is almost bankrupt. I am assuming those things can be determined during the vetting and interview process. IMO...he should go through that process to see if he still has the fire...he would be a great hire he he does. Akron is a far better launching pad than Fresno State.
  10. Same place that all those who believe in entitlements.... OTHER PEOPLE
  11. I don't see keeping our 3 or 4 commits as a major priority. And I don't see Ianello dropping from HC to Recruiting Coordinator. Beyond that, I can't see a new HC wanting the old HC on his staff. Unless we get Charlie Weiss. Supposedly we have 9 verbals. I see what u r saying but I would probably do this if the new coach was ok with it rather than paying him for nothing. Would be difficult for an ex HC to sell the team to potential recruits. And did you ever sell something you did not believe in?? Even if you have good intentions it will come off as insincere. Ex-coaches are like ex-girlfriends and ex-wives. They may be good people and may not have been 100% at fault...but it best to cut ties and move on.
  12. Who's this new thumbnail chart for? The coach who can only beat the likes of Lake Erie High School. I was comparing the teams that an experienced D-1A coach like Hill has beaten, compared to the types of schools that compete in D-II. If you've ever been there, you'd see what I am talking about. Feel free to keep setting those sights high And if you bothered to check into it, you'd know that Lake Erie didn't join the GLIAC until 2010. They're a far cry from Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley etc. Why no mention of Wayne St beating three consectutive ranked teams, one of them the defending national champs, and all on the road? Why confuse a good story with facts??
  13. Claiming a player is "lost" is an old ZN.O catch phrase. It's one of those things Zips basketball fans say when they think they can see into the mind of a player. When you see a Mexican wondering the borders of Alaska with tunnel building equipment....you can safely say by observation that the dude is "lost". May have worked in the old days...works quite well today. Give the guy a compass and send him on his way south. No need to explain about CG. If he is out of place he either is lost...or incapable. He is very capable in my mind. People often take a little time assimilating into a new system or environment. Before…the play was in practice or Canadian games with only part of the team. These games are for real and the coaches have different expectations and the refs call the game differently and the opposition is unknown and unpredictable. I believe he will get up to speed and be productive.
  14. When I hear KD talk about "Akron basketball," this policy of giving it all on the defensive end of the floor is what I think he's referring to. KD always says "it starts on the defensive end". I think he expects defensive effort and smart play within the system. From what I see....Gilliam seems lost at times and presses and forces some shots. He does not seem to move well without the ball...but I am not sure what is expected of him with the guys they have on the floor with him. I can guarantee KD will never be playing like the old Loyola and UNLV style. Gilliam should have done his homework if he does not like the "defense first" style of play. I hope we do not lose him and he starts to get some rhythm and more PT soon. He seems like a good kid and has talent. But this is a young team with some undisciplined guys who need special attention...we can't afford to have a bad attitude in the locker room. I'm not sure what you meant by this comment to this post but if I interpret right you are saying what you think you observed and this is not fact. In your opinion you may be correct in your own mind but I assure you this is not the case in terms of Gilliam being lost Now you may be correct in that the shot selection may be questionable and he is struggling a little but that is part of the game. I don't think speculative judgements clarify how someone feels or doesn't feel if a person is unhappy. You don't understand that coaches find players and not the other way around. Players don't just get to choose where they will play or school they want to go to unless you are in the top 25. Coaches camp out in front of the homes of these players and promise the world and don't deliver and it happens all the time (not saying this is Gilliam's case). Although I have a lot of experience 1st hand I'm always looking to learn about a new system, thats why I enquired about "Akron's". Sometimes a situation can be can be good and sometimes it can be bad for players and has nothing to do with researching a school prior to going there. In terms of attitude in the locker room there is no evidence of it there or anywhere. Being dogmatic and making assumptions is not healthy discussion. Sharing constructive thoughts on the other hand is... You seem very close to Gilliam...probably a family member. I normally do not engage in back and forth debate and would never with anyone as close to a player as you are with CG. I have the highest hopes for CG and think all the guys on this team are "good guys". This is a unique team in that regards. Go Zips!!!
  15. Uh....I don't think we want him. He is almost a copy of Ianello. Strict disciplinarian...had practices at 6AM. Pissed off all the alumni and student fan base. Ran basically the same offence...just realized that he had no running backs and weak line...so he ran the pro from the shotgun (GP1 will dispute this...but those are the words from MH's mouth). I hope we do not consider this guy. I want someone like MH's replacement...someone who WANTS the job he has and loves this university. Next....
  16. @ hoopster Probably one of the best post I have ever read, Thanks for takig the time and joing the forum. You bus analogy was right on. One thing I wil add... Diggs transfered because his school dropped basketball. His motives are obvious.
  17. I agree with you about seeing more of Gilliam. He's getting very frustrated and finding it hard putting on a zips uniform. Then it's a good thing he isn't a Zips football player. Although....I bet he would be pretty good. He is built like a rock. We need a tigh end right??

  19. He was brutally honest. Sounded like GP1 was analizing the loss and play of his team. Refreshing. The interesting thing he said was that only 6 guys were playing well right now and that the 2 seniors have not come through yet on the offensive end.
  20. I am even more impressed with Pat Hill after conisidering his students success in the classroom. It will be interesting to see if the same people who claim they want a more difficult OOC schedule will make any comments about Fresno State’s record. It appears rather unimpressive until you consider who they played. Pat Hill would move to the top of the list for me. He spent enough time in Ohio to understand the culture here. His success on and off the field are what we want and need as a HC. But if he does not want to consider Akron...no one should criticize him. People make life choices and should not be criticized because they do not match what we want or need. And Paul Winter would still look good in my eyes. Pat just looks better right now. "Pat Hill currently has 17 wins over BCS automatic qualifying conference teams, which is tied for the most wins for any non-automatic qualifer with Utah." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Hill
  21. I voted for the Ladies. And I know you are aware that I go to the women's events. I missed this last Saturday because I ended up going to a wake for a friend in Massillon. But I will be there at all the remaining games before we return to Bali. Having written that....even though I have an interest in the women's sports, my # one love is MEN's college basketball. Even though I played baseball and football and SUCKED at basketball....I find college basketball the most exciting to watch and follow. Men’s football and soccer follow. That does not mean I am slighting the women's sports...I am not. I think women’s volleyball and tennis or far more exciting than the men's. Many men (especially older men) do not have much interest in women’s' sports. There was very little women’s sports 20-30 years ago. And if you don't have sisters or daughters playing, there was never any reason to get interested. So...in summary...give the guys on the board a hall pass on this issue. Many have no interest or reason to have interest in women sports. Interest will grow slowly as a result of sisters and daughters playing the sport. If you can get students to Zips sporting events you will be the first to do so and probably hired by the administration in a NY minute.
  22. I have a solution for you... http://www.case.edu/provost/ugstudies/enteringtransfer.htm http://www.mountunion.edu/admission YOU can join the OAC
  23. This thread just shows how frustrated we are as fans. We all know that the initial post is not worth the time it took to read it and certainly not worth a response. I remember a valued mentor of mine once advising me.. "Never swing at pitches in the dirt". I am pretty sure this post and thread would apply. And now I feel I just wasted valuable time writing this post.
  24. False. Coaching is just like playing. The cream of the crop rises up through the higher ranks. There is a reason guys like Les Miles, Jim Tressel, Nick Saban, etc...are where they are. The same thing goes for NCAA coaches moving up to the NFL and failing. Every level is different and you can't always predict success at one level to the next. Thank you. This is what I have been saying all along. I think for the most part, coaches that are buried in obscurity are there for a reason...nobody wants them. And college coaching is a pretty tight fraternity. Guys that are doing a great job tend to get noticed, and get frequent offers for better opportunities. So once again....if Winters has been pursued at any higher level.....even a I-AA school....I'd like to know about it. Winters is black and has that working against him at the D1 level. Historicly, black coaches have had a difficult time getting HC opportuunities in DI. That does not mean just because Winters is balck that he is being overlooked...but the simple facts are that he probably has had fewer opportunities Here is a question for you. How many black HCs are there in D1 and how many have been considered for the open positions over the last 3 years??
  25. The game they won on Saturday was high scoring. I think they actually kicked off more than twice
