It never ceases to amaze me how some people conveniently use facts. "iCoach set the program back 5 years". Now?? They should be able to win within a few years (or sooner!!). LOL Simply amazing.

What if JT didn't get that gift pass interference call in the championship game? Think his legacy would be different? What if?? What if there was no pass interference?? Think people would have respected him more??

@ Zipboy Great post...welcome back -
Guilty. That is why the phrase is in quotes. It is the term used by KD. The point is...you had McNees, KcKights, Roberts, Linhart, Bardo and some others that understood basketball and had years of playing experience. But...if KD wants to call it "Basketball IQ"...it works for me. I do think these guys have the ability to learn...just they have a lot to learn.

When I was in Miami for the Zips-Redhawk game a similar program was airing featuring the Football coach and others. Hopefully we can expand this to include football and soccer at the minimum. Good job UA, TW and all involved. Let's keep moving the ball forward. Go Zips!!!

I respect your opinion. Will you support him if hired or continue negative bashing like some?? And one other question...were you a "no" when Tressell was hired at OSU from YSU?? And did you support him after he got there?? (well...technically that is 2) -
I understand we want to protect Zeke and keep him in the paint. Here are some things to consider: 1. A good man to man is the more difficult defense to beat. 2. To be fair to Zeke...he needs to learn to play man to man if he is going to succeed at the next level. 3. When Zeke goes for the block on shots 6-8 feet or more from the rim...he is out of position to get a rebound. If we don't get the rebound and the other team puts it back in from close range...we lose the impact of Zeke altering shots. We need a coordinated effort and strong play form Tree and the Serb to be really good and effective. We should get better as the team gets to know each other and they learn what to exect from KD and their teammates. I think mixing zone and help schemes are beneficial and KD will know whenis the right time. But I think this team is not as experienced or does not have as high of "basketball IQ" as past teams. That will dictate going a little slower as guys learn the system playing with each other and understanding their roles. The good thing is we have lots of solid players and they are good guys who have the ability to learn. Now..we will see about their desire over the next few months. I disagree, this team has very high IQ but is a little young and lack time playing together... Really...tell me a little about the last few years teams.

Paul Winters Doesn't Want to Win at Akron

Twitter Tom passed on every available coach in the nation when he selected Iannello. By your logic, we shouldn't consider any of those 100+ coaches because...well...we didn't select them 2 years ago. Obviously, TT had no clue what he was doing 2 years ago and shanked his first tee shot deep into the woods. Just thank the Lord that that drive was so aggregious that he was given a mulligan. What in the world are you talking about? That is not my logic at all. He didn't INTERVIEW 100 guys 2 years ago. He interviewed this guy 2 years ago. He didn't deem him good enough for the job. I would like to know why HE thinks he is good enough now. Some guys you hit on, some guys you miss on. As an example= Gene DeFillipo at BC hit on Jeff Jagodzinski a few years ago= 2 ACC Championship appearances in 2 years. He then flies off the handle, fires that guy b/c he wants to better himself (interviewd for Jets HC job) and hires a guy that he passed over 2 years before...and the ship continues to sink at BC b/c of this hire. Not saying I think that will happen here, but that is what BC did= they went with a loyal guy, safe pick, bleed maroon and gold...and passed over MANY candidates who wanted the job (Mike London of UVA for one). He has NEVER answered the question= what made Frank Spaziani the right pick 2 years after passing over him. So, in this case, I would like to hear TW's answer. The problem is...you are asking at the wrong time. PW has not been named coach. I think it is a very fair question AFTER PW is announced (assuming he is). It will be interesting to hear the answer. Unlike many here...I do not believe TW and Ianello were buddies prior to UofA. I do believe he was acquainted with him and knew his work habits. I think he was greatly affected and influenced by the success of the Wisconsin model built by Barry Alverez and his recommendation. Now...if he hires Winters, he will be hiring a guy that was fired by Barry (per the author of this thread). I think Tressel would give Winters a strong recommendation...so maybe TW learned a lesson?? So...yea...I think it would be a great question. -
I coined the phrase, "The Graveyard of Coaches" a couple of years ago. Not exactly true today, but it was then. Dennison never sniffed even a 1AA job....Faust, enough said....Ownes, Ashland. It deserved the phrase. Howevere, Brookhart and now Coach I are in D-1A programs. No longer the graveyard in my mind, but still not the best of career choices. http://buckeyefansonly.com/woody/ See paragraph 5. I did not think you were that old. But if you say you coined the phase...who am I to say you are fibbing. I'm missing something... oops paragraph 7

Enough already. EVERYBODY knows you don't want PW. Stop derailing every thread. Last warning. -
Interesting quote in there.... When other MAC teams were beating Akron senseless the past two years, it looked to me like it was a coaching issue as well as a talent issue. I think you're right. It was some combination of both. I know some people like to bash on ICoach, but I believe he was seriously lacking in adequate personnel in a number of areas. He may have been a bad coach, but no coach can win with bad players. I thought when you have a great recruiter, getting good players is not an issue? He only really had one class. The first class was only partially his. He wasn't a good coach, but I don't think his first class is that bad considering the state of the program. +1 I think he probably is a good coach...just not a good HC. He appears like a bright guy and I was hoping he would figure it out. Our best and most cost effective option would have been for Ianello to figure it out and be successful. He wasn't...time to more on. Time will tell the quality level of the recruits he brought in. I think there is more talent than people here think. For sure...next year will be difficult. Hopefully we can be competitive and win 3 games.

I used to sit on conference calls with my phone on mute laughing at Six Sigma black belts saying things they had no idea what they were talking about and everyone knew it (Hint: This is when you know it is time to exit corporate America and start your own business). This reminds me of those phone calls. Please explain what a "charismatic difference-maker" is.?.? You exiting ZNO?? I will miss you...like this toothache I will have fixed in the morning

Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?
Doug Snyder replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Solution Already been there and done that. But when someone replies to his post…it is public again. But I am way more concerned with the many guests who stop in to ZNO to get information. There are many people I know who do not want to post here because of the civility issues (not being judgmental, just stating fact) and others who are occasional readers. In that group I think are potential recruits, recruits family, administration and casual students. I can understand the criticism of many posters after Ianello was hired. Surprise pick…alienated fans and alumni soon after hire. I get it. But Winters is supported by over 60% of the posters here and I don’t think the other 40% are against him…just “for” someone else. I only see 3 who are openly who oppose Winters being hired. So…if Zach goes on a crusade this time he will look even more like a petulant child who did not get his way. Hopefully he will take a deep breath and realize he does no one any good by his negative posting of the new coach. I am hoping some of his friends pull him aside and tell him to back off. Many student posters here like him so he can’t be a bad guy….just immature. One thing is for certain…we need success NOW on the football team. If Zach, CK, GoZips and others are correct…then Ianello set the program back 5 years . Patience will be needed in the first few years. And we need to support the program and do whatever we can to help moving it forward. One more thing to consider. Paul Winters is a UofA alumni and should be extended respect due to all Zips. He is one of us and I think he has earned it. -
+1 Give him ...or anyone...a hall pass for next year and let them do it right. How many times did we get burned down the middle on pass plays this year. And the safeties?? Freshmen. Looks like they had some talent but they were freshmen!!! Bring in some JUCO linemen and redshirt ALL the freshmen. That strategy will simply not work at the D1 level. Telling all the freshman that they have to sit out would be the kiss of death for recruits. Read comments from recruits....many kids go to places that they think they can play right away. Working in the pro's is one thing, they dont have a choice where they get drafted. Players at the D2 level typically don't have the options to go to other schools, so they go with the program and sit out the year. Turner Gill redshirted his whole freshman class this year at Kansas. And he got fired. True...but it did not seem to affect recruiting. And I am only advocating redshirting the freshman class in his 1st year. After that...maybe 80% would be redshirted.

Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?
Doug Snyder replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
There is a former coordinator out there who once had his offenses in the Top 10 nationally. This former coordinator has also taken a laughing stock from one of the worst teams in their division to the brink of playing in a national championship game. This coordinator has also coached in the MAC so he understands how difficult it is to win somewhere like Akron. Rumor has it, he has close ties to Akron as well. Not another William Riker. 1-9 and 3-7. He was a whopping 4-16 in his first 2 years. How does he follow that? He goes 6-5 in year 3 and follows that up with an impressive 3-8. I am sorry, but if our new coach is 13-29 after 4 years he is as good as fired. We would be screaming from the rooftops to get him out of here. Oh yeah...and this isnt against the SEC, it is D2 ball. I've thought about this as well. He would have never made it to year 5 if he was in the big leagues. Then, just two seasons ago, he finished in 8th place in his conference. How would that have been viewed by Akron fans? And this is the resume of someone you leap-frog up two levels to the big time? When he was a huge part of a staff that failed at this once before? If some people insist that we pull out the good time periods of his time at Wayne, it's fair to talk about the bad periods as well. And some of it was very recent. OK Let's discuss the bad years. Would you hire a HC for Akron knowing he would have one fantastic year and one below average?? In a NY minute. But I think Akron will have sustained success and Winters will be here for 10 years or more. -
Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?
Doug Snyder replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Last year, Miami did exactly what Akron is likely to do. They had an exhaustive search 2 years ealier and came up with Haywood. The #2 guy was the alumni favorite who played and was an assistant at the school (Treadwell). When Haywood left, the search started again (2 years later). So...why would the names change that much?? Some may be taken off and a few others added. But in 2 years, many of the names are basically the same. And Paul Winters has done great in the last 2 years. If they liked him 2 years ago...they have to like him more now. And if they have looked at 4-5 other guys but still like Winters better...then Winters should be the primary target. My prediction... Winters is named HC on Monday. My only hope is that he plays an aggressive game on both sides of the ball. No more CBs playing 25-30 yards off the WRs (OK.. a little exaggeration but not much) -

Doug Snyder replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I can't speak for everyone, but you are oversimplifying the reasons many believe he would be a good coach. The reasons I believe Paul would make a good coach go beyond he is an "Akron guy". Brings along echoes? Echoes actually have to be heard. We are in a situation where nobody is listening and regardless of who they bring in, winning is the only thing that will get them listening again. +1 -
Is Our Head Coach "Search" a Sham?
Doug Snyder replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
True. But can you imagine the firestorm of press coverage that would follow his return to a D-1A program? If there's any chance of getting a big name, with big-time head coaching experience, I'd say that a guy who has already been here at some point in his career would be a logical candidate to pursue. Bowden may be just the jumpstart we need to get our program rolling again. I can see the "Welcome Back" marketing theme already. And maybe we can borrow the old theme from "Welcome Back Kotter" as the background music to the YouTube videos that are sure to follow. And you don't see the "Welcom back" theme working if Winters is the coach?? You really are wearing blinders.
