Currently ranked in the top 10 in every national polls the Zips posted a 2-0 victory to defeat the Falcons for the 12th straight time. The Mid-American Conference opener for both teams drew a crowd of 789. Akron has out-scored BG, 43-4 in that 12-game stretch. PHOTO GALLERY “If you look at the shots, we controlled things both halves,’’ said UA head coach Caleb Porter. The Zips held a 30-10 edge in shots. “In the first half if we score on a few of the chances we had, it’s 5-0 and the game is over,” Porter continued. “I was disappointed that we took our foot off the pedal up 2-0. We still got chances, we just didn’t finish them.” The Falcons were able to stay close and generate a couple of good scoring chances. “I think we’re going to take some positives (from the match),” BG head coach Eric Nichols said. “We didn’t come out here tonight to lose 2-0. “But down 2-0 in the first half to a team like that it would be easy to hang our heads and certainly the guys didn’t,” he continued. “From a soccer standpoint we did some really good stuff in the second half, some of the best stuff we’ve done all year as far as ball movement and speed of play.” Akron scored its two goals in a span of 1:41 in the first half. Alfred Koroma, on an assist from Dillon Serna, scored with 27:28 left in the first half. Scott Caldwell then beat a diving Michael Wiest with 25:47 left in the half. “We were bending and in a few minutes there we broke,” Nichols said. “When we are playing Akron we know that’s the way it has to be; you can’t break.” Wiest, who finished with eight saves, had two good saves early in the match. He stopped Eric Stevenson’s head-high blast about eight minutes into the game. Wiest then followed that up with a diving stop to deny Caldwell. “We think Mike is one of the best around,” Nichols said about BG’s goalkeeper. “We knew that if we going to have a chance in his game he was going to have come up big.’’ With just over a minute left in the first half, Akron’s David Meves made the save off a good shot by Danny Baraldi. Then early in the second half, BG had another good chance, but Zach Lemke’s shot hit the post. “They fueled off the last five minutes (of the first half), where we fell asleep a little bit and the countered us a couple of times,” Porter said. Meves finished with six saves, including four in the second half. “Our guys were just a little sharper in the second half,” Nichols said. “We were sharper defensively ... and we kept (possession) a little bit better in the second half. We were able to stream a couple of passes together and get some chances.” When asked if he has seen improvement in Bowling Green’s play in recent years Porter, in his seventh season with the Zips, said: ‘‘I think they are improving, but it comes down to results. At the end of the day you have to get results and at the end of the day you are measured on how far you go in the conference tournament and the NCAA tournament.” Porter is leaving Akron at the end of the season to coach the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer. Akron is now 5-1-2 overall while Bowling Green is 2-4-2.
