Leaders do not make statements that make 80% to 85% of their athleties feel inferior. That is what Guthrie did when he told every non football player that they had to accept the fact that Akron is a "football" school. Georgia is a football school. Georgia swimmers have won many national titles. Georgia tennis players have won many national titles. Georgia tennis players and Georgia Swimmers respect Georgia football players because they are elite star athletes that compete at the highest level. Georgia elite athletes in their top non football sports respect that Georgia is a football school. Akron mens basketball players and Akron men's soccer players compete every year to get into the NCAA tournament. Those athletes do not want to be talked down to and told that "Akron is a football school" when they know that Akron football will win 1 to 3 games every year. Another Great example. - I worked for 6 years in Bloomington when Bobby Knight was coaching Indiana University (IU)men's basketball and Jerry Yeagley was coaching men's soccer at that time. IU was also doing great in swimming and diving at that time. Did IU football bring in more revenue than basketball and soccer? Yes !!!....However, the IU Athletic Director was a man of dignity and he appreciated all student athletes. The IU athletic director would never have told national championship winning athletes that they had to accept the fact that IU was a "football" school. Guthrie's bold statement was offensive and showed poor judgement and a tremendous lack of respect.

Can anyone refresh my memory? Was the Ohio State game originally scheduled to be played on Sunday? Was the game first moved to Tuesday with the hope that it could be played on the Akron Campus? My memory is that by Tuesday...the field was still not playable so they moved the game to Wednesday. Did Northwestern end up having 3 days more rest than Akron? I think that Northwestern won their game on Sunday. Was the real temperature for the Ohio State at Akron game in the neighborhood of -5 degrees ? (maybe colder) I flew fron Nashville to Cleveland Tuesday night to spend Thanksgiving with my parents. When I got off the plane, my first question to my parents was "Did the Zips soccer team beat Ohio State on Tuesday night? " (I had told them that the game would be on 1350 radio). My dad smiled and said "The game has been moved to St. V on Wednesday and your mom, you and I are going to the game". It was a bone chilling to watch 1:09:55 of soccer action ...but it is one of my fondest memories with my parents in their later years (my mom passed away in early 2010). There was nothing better than watching Caleb Porter teams in tournament action during Thanksgiving week. Thanksgiving week 2009 - My mom's heart was too weak to go to tournament game in 2009. My dad and I watched the Zips beat Indiana in 2009 NCAA action during the week of Thanksgiving (My mom was glued to the radio...listening to the great Steve French broadcast the game).

Guthrie is always the hero...when he is telling the story !!!! You can believe what you want to believe. Other athletic directors considered him to be a narcissist and a snow boater. You are talking about the same athletic director ......who at last year's student athletic meeting....told Caleb Borneo and other student athletes....that Akron is a "football" school and that athletes in minor sports needed to get used to Akron being a football school. That arrogant comment by Guthrie did not go over well with men's soccer players and men's basketball players and other fine student athletes. Chuckles talked a good game and claimed credit for everything. As YipaZip accurately said in the 2nd post in this topic..............................."Hopefully the new AD cares more about soccer. " Personally, I hope that the next AD has a smaller amount of arrogance and narcissism. I also hope that the next AD does not call in "sick" on senior day when he is out secretly interviewing for another job (and violating terms in his contract).

very wise advice from a dedicated fan.....who was passionately follwing Zips soccer when George and Louie starred on the pitch. 1 game at a time. 3 years ago, all of us were absoutely ecstatci because we got to play patsy Santa Clara in the first round. This year, on paper.......according to RPI....;.the Zips are an underdog.... #34 Akron vs. #17 Princeton on Sunday, Princeton dominated the #6 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Ivy League had 3 teams rated in the top 25 by RPI. The Big East only had 2teams in Top 25 RPI. Seton Hall finished in the top half of the Big East. When Princeton played Seton Hall, Princeton pounded them 5-2 No looking ahead for our beloved Zips........Weather is going to be cold and slippery. The Zips need to come out ready to play against a top 20 RPI team

Soccer is such a hard game for the best team to always get the win. Let's look at the current RPI Georgetown is #3 overall Would you believe me ...if I said that Georgetown only WON 55% of their games this year? Georgetown is #3 in RPI and their record is 11 wins ; 4 losses and 5 ties.... Akron with a record of 11-4-4...has a better record than Georgetown Pitt is #4 overall would you believe me if I said that they lost almost 30% of the games played? Pitt finished with a record of 12 wins and 5 losses Denver is #2 and they only won 63% of their games they are 12-3-4 Personally, I think that the zips get in........ I think that the tournament is wide open this year....... If the Zips get in, I hope they get put on the opposite side of the draw from Ohio State. Ohio State.....is just so deep, so talented and so physical. It is going to be tough for any team to win a game this Thursday night and then go to Columbus on Sunday and beat a rested Ohio State team. Personally, I am hoping that Akron plays Michigan on Thursday night...with the winner...then playing Pitt on Sunday.

I do not know who was the commentator....I was at the title game in Cary, NC. Very cold, very wet day. A dry field might have benefited the ball control team. A huge group of AK Rowdies made the trip down to Cary. I still remember the driving force of the rowdies....stting on a sidewalk outside the stadium.....uncontrollably crying. That 2009 team was 23-0-0 going into the semis. They did not allow a goal in any of the 5 tournament games and yet they did not win. Mikey was not healthy for that game. Ampai played but was nowhere near 100%. Virginia just beat the living tar out of Ampai and knocked him out of the game. 15 years later, Diego Restrepo still makes me mad.

Marshall jumped from #13 to #8.....with a "tie" on the road. Despite the PK win , WVU stayed at #16 in RPI Good news that Akron stayed ahead of UNCG. UCLA does have a 2-1 win over Ohio State .......and a regular season tie and a PK loss against Michigan. UCLA currently shows as last team out..... no clue ....whether an Ohio win today or a Michigan win today...would benefit UCLA more Fordham was 32 at the start of the day and Oregon State was 30 at the beginning of the day Michigan was 28 at the start of the day currently...with today's results....Fordham has jumped to 29....Oregon State has dropped to 32 Michigan has dropped from 28 to 31 would a Michigan loss today in big ten final...drop them behind Akron....for an at large spot ???????
