I disagree that Chauncey isn't pro potential. He played as a freshmen for 30 mins a game putting up big numbers on people already in the NBA, a captain in his 2nd year, and was drawing solid interest from scouts in those 2 years prior to getting to Akron. He was a high major recruit same as Walsh with ACC, Big East, Big 12 and SEC along with some high mid majors on the list A-10, CAA and etc. He's also a PROVEN scoring threat and is one of if not the best scorer on the Akron team shooting over 50% FGA as a freshman and 40% in his second year with nearly 700 points in two years at UMBC. You wouldn't have seen it because the politics of the game at Akron shadowed his true potential. You make your assessment over this first year here at Akron when he came there was expecting to be a totally different player one that I've never seen since I coached or watch him play in the last 15 years. He has a game similar to that of Dwayne Wade, Kobe, and Charles Barkley but is not allowed in KD's controlled system of play. I've watch and have tapes on this kid scoring 30 plus on the Morris twins, Tyreke Evans, Corey Fisher, Sam Young, and many more (go ask somebody). For some reason KD recruited him knowing this but demanded that he play a different style when he got to Akron. This is not the same player I know and there is no benefit for him not. He has a ton of experience where he makes everyone around him better and most of all he is unselfish, which I can't say about the majority of the team. KD support my argument when he mentioned this on the post Can't game press conference the night before the championship. To me and Chauncey this doesn't make ant sense and as a person really close to him that really piss me off. I know one thing if it wasn't for him you would have lost more games had he not saved your butts. As a matter a fact if you had him and Treadwell in the place of Walsh and Nick down the stretch of the Ohio game you would be going to the dance right now you ungrateful naive people. He has hit more big shots in games in the last two years than the entire Akron team did this year. KD won't let him do what he does and its not on Chauncey. You only know what is right in front of you not the true story.

You are out of your mind giving Chauncey a C-. You can have your own opinion but Chauncey was not allowed to play his game this season. For whatever reason it doesn't make sense. Listen to KD's post game interview after the Can't game. For the record UA lost every game Chauncey mins were compromised. He is much better than you know...

My favorite player!!!
-
I totally agree with DR Z on this. Good defense and good coaching.
-
My sentiments exactly...
-
That is BS. I know why he didn't start and it has to do with one of the players. If the coach play him as a guard where he belongs then is D will be much better.

U want to know who the good old boys are. Theses are guys that helped us loose early in the season. KD has a favorite lists and Chauncey is not one of them. For that reason by default I think KD is a piece of ---- His favorites guys played 23 mins plus and didn't score that much for min played (except for Alex). Chauncey played only 10 mins for whatever the reason and for a team who makes that adjustment no wonder he didn't score. If you want him to score go to your coach and tell him to wake up...
-
Despite the refs we have to play through it and overcome. We want a the 1 seed we have to desire it, eat it, expect it and most of all take it. It won't be given to us.

Zips J, This was what I meant...I know inside stuff that I don't share on this site but a special player called me and had a heart to heart. I told him almost what you said. Either a player wants to play or he doesn't when he is aware what is at stake. You can't make him do what his heart won't allow him to do. But I totally agree that you don't experiment late in the season. This is what I meant when I said go with what got you to 12-1. You should play every game late Fed. as if it is March (win or go home) Oh my definition for good old boys was Brett 3 point air ball for starters..Also I know my kid when he his mind isn't clear he won't concentrate on his shot. I was really hurt the team didn't clinch the title tonight as well.
-
This was the worst coached game I ever seen. This was not the players fault but a coach that is true to his old style of coaching. KD went with the good old boys and they lost the game again. Are you really surprised? Really? I'm not...You stick to the plan that got you to 12-1. Too funny!!!

You are absolutely right and it is UA and not AU sorry. Every player who've played the game know to spread the defense and make the offense work harder for the shots like last night. We did a poor job and paid dearly for it. I was heartbreaking because it was on national television where those opportunities are hard for some schools to come by. I talked to one player and he stated that they will be set for the tourney. I have no doubt that they will try but every team for the rest of the season will use this tape and think they can beat UA. Also that he felt the team has no hard feelings about the lost. They are over confident and arrogant which makes for a bad recipe. It would be nice to think they have learned but I don't think so. The team need intensity and the sense of urgency like their lives depend on the win.
-
I agree not taking anything away from Ohio. They beat us to death last year at their home as well. They must be a very good team. But hands down we are better and we as a team needs to know that...

This is what bothers me more than anything and probably is why I haven't been on this site lately. Prior to ORU the team was almost set with the rotation being key in the way AU could potentially run over teams. The coaching staff decided to change up and returned back to the good old boys lineup and disrupted the order of things. The two games after that also relied on that network but was NOT an issue until the lost last night which makes it very apparent to me and anyone who knows anything about the game. Adding to misery the coaching staff allows for selfish game play from a few players, who wants to pad their STATS, which only adds to a losing mentality playing good teams. All season long the best mult-dementional scorer has not been allow to do what he was recruited to do by not being placed in scoring position, and forced to play out of position because of his athleticism. The best three players have been limited to the least amount of minutes on the team and its not about defense or confidence but a hierarchy that seek unrealistic results. Out of 5 coaches on the bench not one has stepped up and made this observation where a lot of analyst have said the same thing I've been thinking and saying all along. This to me has pissed me off because it doesn't make good logical sense to have a power house and potentially sweet 16 team and not let them play ball. Q and Gilliam play well together and offer a dual treat on the wing, why haven't this been done more? Add Tree and Harney who play well together in their perspective roles and I mean perspective and they add to the dominance adding Zeke and Alex. I like Zeke and he may be a pro but the coaches should have worked on his footwork making him a more dominate presence on the floor on offense ( like Hubbert at GT). Also the team has one of the best inside outside game players in Zeke and Gilliam and this has been ignored all season long with exception of 2 games. Add Q on the other side and you have a dual threat. I've said this before, I saw this team play over the summer and the combination of players who play best together have been used a few times over the season. In fact this combination beat the other players so bad so many times in a summer pick up game that the good old boys got pissed and walk off in frustration (as in being a punk). Thats what they are doing now, walking off when a team really get into and need them. Another thing, if you have a player with a 44 inch vertical that won a dunk contest in high school jumping over 6 people not being put in position for back door cut/alley's is a waste of his talents? If you recruit super athletes let them play a supersize game and those who can't be prepared to come off the bench as role players. Murray state doesn't have a problem doing that and a few other mid majors who are stacked as AU. Unfortunately, when are they going to wake up and put the best players on the floor before or after it is too late. Recognizing that those who know how to win with guts, desire and knowing how to close out games and send a strong message. Meantime until that recognition this is a big fat waste of time...If we are not going to play the best together at the right time then maybe its best that the team get eliminated. That way they can learn from their mistakes and potentially make adjustments in the future. In my opinion there is no way this team should have gotten beat down by Ohio U even on their worst day and I blame this all on a coaching staff that thinks way too small.

This will probably be my last posts as I'm not trying to irritate anyone but just stating my opinion. I love the game of basketball and I've played the game as well as coached for several years at the AAU level. Some of the guys I coached and got placed in college and NBA would probably blow your mind. So when I make a point I'd like to believe that my point is valid. I've met a lot of college coaches over the pasts 25 plus years. I make comments here because I felt I know and relate to todays players because it's been my life for so long nothing personal. I never mentioned anything about team chemistry threats or anything of the like. I simply made a point that based on my experience great athletes come with huge egos. Players like feeling loved by fans and the coaches and when that is threatened they move on. Whether they want to transfer or either enter the draft early but won't stay if they are not comfortable. Now Walsh's father and I are close and he knows what I think about his son and will not go into what I say to him in private. But I will say I love him like he's my son and he a has stronger parts to his game as do other players. So in case you are wondering there is no wedge there nor will I allow you to put words in my mouth. There are a lot of good players on the team. However, there are players who are talented enough to go to the next level and Zeke is not the only one. They have every right to protect their future and we are the lasts people to make them feel guilty for our own selfish agenda. This sports thing is a business both for the coaches and the players. I said IN MY OPINION when I replied to the post. I'm not sure if the misinterpretation comes from you or midwesterners as a whole, but I have problems with people whom don't let others speak their mind. Every player parents and coaches know what is my intent and my heart is totally engaged for this program because of my commitment to one of the players. Fans only care about one thing and that is winning and the rest of us have a vested interests that will love them good bad or indifferent. So if you disagree with me on my point so be it. My rights to speak is protected by the constitution of the US!!!

I agree somewhat with this but there are several true scorers on the team who could score 30+ points if they play more minutes. Tree, Harney, Gilliam, Q are all capable to score 30+ but score in different ways...I don't agree with the closers and think this will come back to bite the ZIPS in conference play and tourney. I believe the best guys should be in to close out games. True athletes have true egos and live to close out games. This waiting for their time crap only tic these players off. They are not stupid and eventually will walk meaning transfer or move on. Put the best on the floor to close and keep these egos happy...Everyone on the team knows who brings more options to the team and KD need to stop relying on Vets just because they are. Especially when the ZIPS come up with a lost.
-
Ok you made a good point...I respect mid west basketball even though I'm not from there. And I agree with the proven players you mentioned 100%
-
I think we got lucky. By the way Q should be starting in my opinion
-
I totally agree...We had them beat and let them back in!!!
-
I agree with the win. I don't know about the history as it may or may not hold any weigh in my opinion but thanks for the heads up. I was told many years ago that basketball is basketball no matter where you go and no matter how you play it. The game remains the same but what changes is ones perspective. Today the ZIPS have a new athletic team with high IQ and its time for them to evolve for the better. Believing you can win no matter what the situation. Always a pleasure hearing your comments...
-
I support team play and not individual play. Save the individual play for the NBA not college. Trust me it hurts team moral in the long run I've learn this 1st hand...You win as a team and lose as a team not as an individual. In terms of last year it worked but this year you have many more people you don't need it. Not to mention it's hard on a player's body.
-
Ok I agree with this posts and stand to be corrected. Harney can score and I'm a great fan and I've told him that personally. However, I've mentioned because he's young and experience playing organized ball that he needs to play more as a team and make plays. What I mean by this if you watch him his 1st option is to score as opposed to making a play. His biggest bad habit is looking off teammates that have a higher percentage shot. It was a good win and no doubt we the Zips take a win anyway we can get it. I like Q and Gilliam in together because it keeps a team guessing because of their fearlessness and multi-dementional ability to score...

Nothing personal against the zips, I'm not being critical but being very observant and very entitled to my opinion. I am totally a Zips fan and even sat in a few practices and watched this team close up. The talent this year is very deep and there is no way Miami should have been in the game playing at home away or in a barnyard. Being that I know basketball (beyond high school) very well I recognize good and bad play when I see it. I love to watch good team play as well as a well coached team. I think both the team and the coaching staff have still a lot to learn. The MAC in my opinion is not as tough as the SEC or CUSA which the zips played up very well and won. In my experience I understand there are nights where a team won't gel or just have a bad night whether from a team or coaching standpoint. And last night's contest was one of those games the way I see it. I just think if the zips play like they did against the two big teams they beat, I fell they won't have much to worry about in the MAC. So its my opinion that I make this comment. And for your information I have a personal investment which drives me to be a Zips fan trough and through...You know I thought this was a blog where people have the right to there opinion. I really believe in this team and I believe in KD but I think we as fans coaches and team have only scraped the surface of our abilities. In terms of a pill...well I will just leave that alone and assume you just don't know who you are responding to. Go Zips!!!

I think this was one of the worst games as a team and coaching this season from my perspective. The Zips caught a break getting a win they should have eased through. Where is the inside outside play on the offense? I hate isolation plays from Q (not the NBA this is college) and where the heck is the inside outside play on offense having a 7 footer on the team. In my opinion having people put in place to lead the team decision making substituting and play calling was down right awful. I think Harney is a ball hog and needs to learn to play as a team and could well get 30 a night with more minutes. But so could other players as well. I also think there is a level of favoritism for some players versus others because some players get away with some crap that shouldn't be tolerated that hurts the team. What is interesting to me is when seemingly the right players are on the floor and things are clicking substitutions are made and the team fall in and out of the same hole over and over again. This is something that can't be taught as I said before some things you just know. At Marshall I saw that the team had matured playing together by impressive form and the game last night it's got me wondering. Who was this team on the floor last night?
