  1. Not surprisingly, the Toledo message board is very much in favor of Campbell for HC.
  2. Check out the 4th post in the comment thread!
  3. The Toledo Blade reports that Tim Beckman has accepted the HC position at The University of Illinois. LANGUAGE WARNING!!
  4. Why shouldn't it be? I'm on the edge with this program. I just can't waste college football Saturday's anymore. It SHOULD be a home run. Everybody wants a "sure home run". A school with the athletic budget of Akron can't afford one of those, however. So if they want a home run, they're forced to take a risk on someone like a Matt Campbell, for instance. Sometimes this approach takes you over the wall, and sometimes it's three big swings and three big misses. BTW, I have no trouble going after Matt Campbell, assuming Toledo hasn't bumped him up once Beckman leaves for Illinos.
  5. Morgan St is probably the only realistic OOC win. So 2 to 4 total wins likely means 1 to 3 MAC wins. That sounds about right unless the HC hire is a home run.
  6. Yeah! He/she thinks we're #1!
  7. Here is a good summary of how Wayne St was able to turn things around.
  8. The internet sports equivalent of The National Enquirer (Bleacher Report) predicts whether each of all 120 FBS teams will be better or worse in 2012 than they were in 2011. Who needs an assigned head coach to make a prediction? They say the Zips will be "better" in 2012. I think you can take that to the bank You have to love the old pic of Zippy from the Rubber Bowl.
  9. CNNSI confirmation of Weis to Kansas. There's probably a decent chance Dayne Crist will rejoin Weis, with or without Ianello.
  10. I'm inclined to agree with you, Dave. In fact, I think I already did FYI - I deleted Dave's post today where he reminisced about Hipsher. @ CK - you'll have nobody to blame but yourself if a certain song pops into your head again @ Dave - I figured as much, but couldn't resist messing with you

  12. Whether he gets the job or not, and whether you think he deserves the job or not, there is one thing you have to admire Paul for this season. In spite of the continuing speculation about the Akron job, he has not allowed himself or his team to lose focus. You can’t say the same about Kevin Sumlin, for instance.
  13. I'll go out on a limb and say he would not be on their short...or long list. Was just trying to fan the flames.
  14. Maybe Toledo will steal Winters from us? Hmmmmmm.........he has coached there and Toledo is a lot closer to Detroit.
  15. THIS provides a glimpse into why Boise State's decision to join the Big East was extremely short-sighted.
  16. I don't think the candidates with current jobs would appreciate being on an announced short list. Either way we need to move faster as we are getting passed every day in the coaching carousel. Agreed. That's the HUGE disadvantage of possibly going after coach who is involved with a playoff system. Who knows, if UA wasn't considering someone like Winters, maybe they could have gone ahead and signed Campbell before Beckman gets picked up by Illinois. This is crazy stuff.

  18. Chicago Tribune says the Illini are indeed close to signing Beckman.
  19. If the Illini go with Beckman, I'd say that's a very likely scenario.
  20. Nobody is trying to force you to predict who the next coach will be. But if you had your druthers, who would you want to see hired? I’ve made it clear that while I like Winters and think he would do a respectable job here, I will not be nearly as disappointed if he doesn’t get the job as you apparently will be if he does. There are quite a few additional names I’ve seen mentioned here that would get me excited for the direction the program is taking.
  21. I wonder if anything was destroyed on the 'Bama bench last night? And how good does U@B's win at UD look right now?
  22. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I would be surprised if even a successful D-II coach was the most targeted candidate for any D-1A school looking for a head coach. I'd be incredibly underwhelmed if he is selected. I see him as the "we couldn't get anyone else" candidate at this point. I really hope Patrick Nicely and/or Paul Winters get a chance to meet you someday.
  23. Historically...because The University of Akron has no clue how to run a successful D1-A football program. And this is reflected in these rankings of the FBS jobs that became available this year.
  24. No doubt, B&G. But here is where the comment from Beckman about how he thinks Matt is the best recruiter in the MAC hits home. It's one thing for some ND homer like Lemming to call a guy a great recruiter, but it's an entirely different situation when your boss (who probably would prefer to keep you) says it. And it's not like Matt would be recruiting a different type of player at UA vs Toledo. Does he have the organizational skills, like Doug alluded to? That's the $64,000 question.
