Akron related threads on a Badger board
johnnyzip84 replied to BigAppleBucky's topic in Akron Zips Football
There is no way Dayton would be on top of this list. In fact it IS interesting that Akron is one of the few Ohio cities NOT on a recent list of "fastest dying cities" (see link below).Link -
I thought about the QB situation a lot over the weekend, in context with some of the things JD has been saying in camp. JD has complained about injuries and some have suggested that he's already making excuses/setting the team up for failure etc. In contrast to this, the one thing JD has been pretty consistent about is his attitude about the QB position, specifically that it is much improved over last year. I know that's hard for a lot of us to swallow, given that we've seen Jacq have some pretty poor outings and it looks like he will remain the starter. I am wondering, are we (including myself) forgetting that these players are ALL still developing and is a dramatic improvement really out of the question? If the O-LINE is as improved as many suspect, won't that make ANY QB that much better? Also, it's not like Jacq didn't have his moments of success last year (WMU stats below).Akron Passing C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT C. Jacquemain 23/41 389 9.5 4 1 I realize that Jabari had a lot to do with Jacq's success that game, but I think this years WR corps will have significantly more balance and be a better overall threat even without him. I guess what I am saying is that I'm ready to give Jacq a shot this year before handing the reigns over to Rodgers. Give him 3-4 games anyway before drawing any conclusions.

5-7 and 6-6 are the two most likely records IMHO.

 i ordered some tickets for this but have not gotten them yet...anybody else?I called the ticket office on Friday as to why I had not received mine as yet. They said that were waiting for some information from Syracuse first (start time, perhaps?). I'll bet they'll be in the mail very soon.

That'll make for a late arrival back in Akron, but the regional TV exposure and the extra time for indulging before kickoff will make it well worth it

How do you get excuses out of his comments? How much more straightforward can he be? Man, if the guy blew anymore smoke up our butts it would be coming out our ears! I take it that you think JD's playing opposum with these comments, CK? That may indeed be the case, but it's a little bit puzzling in that I don't recall him pulling that sort of thing too often before. Then again, maybe he realizes (in spite of the injuries in camp) that he has his deepest team, by far, to date?

End of Summer Rankings.....
johnnyzip84 replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Please give Zeke a "Best Wishes" for his Sr. year, both academically and athletically. First and foremost, let's hope he stays healthy It just so happens my son is also enterring his Sr. year and coincidentally is very interested in computer science as well. It'd be pretty cool if they ended up in some of the same classes together at UA, but he's still mulling over a number of schools at the moment. Thanks for the update! -
Well since I've heard the coaches mention him by name AND he happens to play a position in which the coaches have also expressed a desire to rotate more freely (due to having better depth here than in recent years), I will nominate Hasan Hazime. You gotta love these Vanier Prep guys

Yeah, stretch it all of the way to Richmond, KY!

That's what I was thinking. I wont take him too early because I suspect everyone in my league (unless there are Giants fans) will not know him.Did you see Domenik really turn on the afterburners about half way through his kickoff return. He's got a serious third gearI play in an 8 team league, otherwise I think I might take him even earlier. I know, you're not supposed to draft with your "heart", but how many chances do you get (unless you play in a league that has positions for defense) to assure yourself of getting a Zip on your roster? (OK, I DID have Frye briefly for similar reasons )To throw my 2 cents in on another comment, I don't think there is any way the Giants don't keep Hixon this year, unless another team in even greater need at receiver makes them an "offer", the likes of which is normally associated with a certain ficticious resident of north Jersey who is well know in "Sanitation Consulting" circles

I think I might grab him in the later rounds in my fantasy draft GO ZIPS!!!!!!

What do you think about Marquinn Davis?
johnnyzip84 replied to Mr. Roo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Well, JD's been implying that we'll see lots of rotating on both the OL and DL this year with the percieved increase in depth. I hope Marquinn gets his shots and makes the most of them. -
I hope there's a bright side.....I haven't seen anything about season ending injuries yet. Let's hope the little nicks and dings are all that we see in camp.

I've never seen the guy play, but he has been a player who has intrigued me (based on stats alone AND being a relative newcomer to football) since he was signed. I was hoping for big things out of him (eventually) at DE, so I'm kind of surprised by your mention of the coaches thinking he isn't athletic enough to play defense. I'm not disputing it, I just haven't heard that before. Do you care to offer the source? -
This is starting to remind me of the times when I would call in to ask questions of Gerry Faust on "the CAT" with Joe Dunn (I believe) handling the calls. I didn't receive channels 29 or 35 on my cable package back then, so I would be fooling around with a UHF antenna, phone in my other hand, trying to peak through the snow on the TV while listening to Gerry try to explain why we didn't have Marcel Weems throw the ball more when Can't had 9 defenders on the line of scrimmage on every play during the flushes upset of the Zips at Dix Stadium one year Back to subject, I'd like for Razor to ask JD if he is considering playing both Jacq and Rodgers the 1st game only vs Wisconsin. Not that I want a 2-headed beast again, because I don't. I just think it might make for a good opportunity to see what Matt has to offer "under fire". After the Badgers, I'd go with the guy who played best in that game.

The game will no where be close to a sellout...expect 30,000-35,000 if we are 1-0 and 25,000 to 30,000 if we are 0-1. Plenty of cheap tickets can be had around the Dome...should be able to get a ticket for $10-15. BTW, don't worry about where the ticket is located. The ushers do not check your tickets with the crowds being so light. So you can always buy a ticket on the street and move over to the official Akron section. BTW, the Dome serves beer up to the beginning of the 2nd half. If the temperature for the game is predicted to be higher than 65-70 degrees--wear shorts and a t-shirt. The Dome gets very hot.Looks like I may have overpaid a little Oh well, it'll be worth it. Thanks for the tips TM. I'll make sure to bring light clothing just in case. BTW, where would be the best "sports bar" type of place to head to on Friday night to get into some good natured discussion/ribbing, etc. about college football with other Akron and Syracuse fans?

Quarterbacks, quarterbacks, quarterbacks
johnnyzip84 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
I suspect not having Bain in there helped allow the O-line to give both QBs plenty of time. Of course, we just won't know the true value of the results that come out of these scrimmages until the Zips are lined up against another school. On a side note (having watched the Indians over the last 10 or so seasons) it's nice to see walk-on Teddy Robb from Northwest making a play when he gets a chance. -
Just to let everyone know, tickets for the Syracuse game are available at the UA ticket office for $36. I've seen them cheaper ($15-20) on "broker sites", but you might not end up sitting near the bulk of the other Zip fans.
-
I just booked my hotel and ordered my tickets through the UA ticket office today. I can't wait for this one! While I still think a win over the Orange in the dome would constitute a mild upset, I'm certainly not read to concede I hope anyone who can make it is there, and that everyone who is there is LOUD. Being indoors, I can easily envision a few hundred of us getting noticed.
-
Is there any concrete information out there on Bain? Losing him for any stretch would be a huge blow obviously. I was counting on him to be a BIG reason why I believe the D can carry this team.
-
I am glad to know that I am not the only one. Misery loves company.Count me in the "early season optimism" club! I think this is just part of being a "fan" for a lot of us.

Try this linkJohnny, I'm guessing Rasor should get most of the credit, not the "leakin"Agreed, Dr Z!

Apparently, Frenchie discussed this a bit on WNIR this morning (but it wasn't at 7:15 am, 'cause I was listening then). It smells of a "setup" to me. I love the way Martin just assumes it was UA students in the second link.Link 1Link 2

Dwight Lowery a zip? I don't usually question what you say Zipwatcher, you're much more knowledgeable then me but i didn't think he was a zip and ESPN lists his college to be San Jose state. You asked for some proof, so here it is.Link

That definitely stood out to me as well. With skin cancer an increasing concern, I can certainly understand JD wearing one. But I do wonder what the "old school" coaches would do if they saw it
