Hey I was comparing this preview to the one on the Cincy Bearcat Rivals page (see earlier thread titled "the outside view") and uakronkid, you are all over this one. They just took it (UC Bearcat original) and stuck it threw a word grinder. Unreal.

Here's to the Zips pulling off more than a few "unhappies" this season!

UA Recruits Win at Home Depot Center
johnnyzip84 replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Odds are I won't be able to make it unless the College Cup is played on the West Coast -- an unlikely scenario. Find me in the stands at UNM Soccer stadium in Albuquerque 9/12/08.I've noticed how many universities have "double-service" track & field and soccer fields. The place they play in Cowlumbus; Drake Field at UCLA; New Mexico's place are all track stadiums first. So the idea that Akron is at a disadvantage because they don't have a major soccer-only facility may not be that big a thing. It doesn't appear to be hampering Caleb's ability to recruit future pro players.BTW -- did anyone see the 16 year old Ethiopian, Ibrahim score for Toronto FC vs the Chicago Fire yesterday? Bob Bradley better get that kid's immigration documents to his doorstep, like now, man! Hurry before the Canadians get there first.I saw a replay of Ibrahim's goal after the game on FSC. It was impressive indeed, but I may have even been more impressed with how this kid handled the interview after the game. He seems to be extremely calm and mature for his age. -
It's nice to see the event being covered by BIG media (even though it's coming from Lebron's likely-to-be new NBA home before too many more seasons).Link

Maybe he's invisible? The Original Invisible HarveyPs. Note the early "slam" of Akron towards the bottom. Bastages!

Zeke Featured in the PD
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Everytime I think I've read the best of this story, it just keeps getting better and better. This is really turning into a "pinch me to see if I'm dreaming" tale that only Zip fans could fully appreciate. -
I heard from a big Illini fan at work that just like Joel Goodson (Tom Cruise) in Risky Business, Hull is now saying "looks like it's the University of Illinois!". The Zooker seems to be making the most of his Ohio roots these days.

My first impression is that I like it. I particularly like the explicit reference to the founding year (1946) of the league. This could serve to differentiate the MAC from some of the "Johnny come latelys" of conferences, such as the Sun Belt and C-USA. This change was WAY overdue. That old logo was horrid. It almost appeared to be fictional in my eyes.

It could also be noted the Revs have are a 1st place team with a solid defense as well, making this an even better performance for Ubi. I've also seen Cameron Knowles play some for Portland of the USL 1st Division on FOX Soccer Channel this year. Are there any other Zips currently playing in MLS or USL (D-1 or D-2)? -
Will Middleton (6-5, 245) of Marietta, Ga

TE Jim Teknipp (6-6, 230) of McDonough, Ga. is also mentioned as having received offers from both UA and UCF in the article. -
It's a LITTLE off topic, but did anyone catch that Howard Schnellenberger is the face of TWO programs????? Yup, both Louisville (the Brohm brothers would have been better) and Florida Atlantic selected him as the "face" of their respective programs
-
It's nice to see Sewell and Bain get some pre-season attention as well. I'll go ahead and predict that both of them will also make the POST-season all-MAC teams, PLUS at least one of our LB's.

Ah man that is awesome. It sucks I am at work and can't see this (no Java). Does anyone think it will be visible from RT 8?I checked on the way to work this morning, and you can definitely see steel from route 8!

Two Zips in Ohio North/South Game

I see that WR Teddy Robb of Northwest is also on one of the rosters. I heard at one time he was considering walking on at UA also, but I haven't heard much lately. -
Recruiting Florida Again
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
What kind of comment is that? So outside of Florida you can put talent above character? No, you just have to look much more closely at character when it comes to a Florida kid, and if there are any red flags at all, you pass. It's just a different culture many of the kids from down there are raised in, and it often doesn't mesh well at all with Ohio and Pennsylvania kids. Anyone who has ever been involved with college football knows what I'm talking about.Seriously, that has to be one of the dumbest posts I have ever seen here. You've obviously never been on a college football team and know nothing about locker room chemistry and the problems that can occur when you throw kids from Florida, who for whatever reason nobody closer to home wanted, in with Midwestern kids. Almost every single kid JD has gone down to Florida to get has been a problem and most of them have quit, packed up their bags, and left.Actually - I was a Zip football player on scholarship and from the south. I started for three years, got my degree in 4 and was never an issue in the lockeroom- so I take exception to your contentious/stereotypical remarks. I do however remember a few guys on our team from the midwest that had issues and created problems in the locker room. A few were even from OHIO  I do agree that character should play a major role in deciding on a high school player. I also think that should be the case for any player you recruit.......even kids from the great state of ohio.Well stated. -
Zips Football Golf Outing Shocker!

Frenchy would put it this way......"OUTSTANDING!" :bow:It's sort of the same as when a criminal returns to the scene of the crime. -
Still No Love from Pre-Season Rags
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'm not saying I will, but I'll give it a shot. Having a good defense keeps you in most games. I believe the 2008 defense WILL be good, and has a chance to be VERY good. The front 6 or 7 will be the best the Zips have ever had. The questions are in the secondary, and I think this is what will determne if the overall D will be very good or just good. I think the Zips can can win 4 or 5 games without even getting significant improvement in QB play. If the D comes through like I suspect (may the injury bug please stay away), the O can help by simply not turning the ball over as much. Remember, I wasn't asked to convince you they would win the division, just not finish in last place! :rofl:And to skip-zip's point, we'll see how the U at B holds up now that every MAC team on their schedule begins to take them seriously. With the topsy-turvy nature of the MAC, Turner Gill may have wished that he cashed his chips in after 2007 once 2008 is over. -
I found an interesting site that attempts to summarize the predictions of many of the leading pre-season magazines. It's only got predictions from 4 magazines thus far, but promises to add more as they hit the street. Regardless of how crazy the predictions may seem, AT LEAST it might save us all a little time and/or money (I guess that's redundant since they are one in the same) at the news stand.LinkNow I wasn't expecting the so-called pundits to heap praise on the 2008 UA squad, but this is getting to be one slap in the face after another. I see where Street & Smith's and The Sporting News have merged in the off-season. I'll be curious to see where THEY pick the Zips. I realize that this is all speculation (if you hit the back arrows on the site, you'll see that UA was the consensus to WIN the East in 2006 and finish 3rd in 2005) and it ends up being wrong most of the time, but it IS indicative of how the program is being perceived at the moment. Forget the final record, if the Zips actually DO somehow end up in last place in the MAC East I think JD will and should be let go. For the record, I don't think it will happen though. 5-7 and about a 4th place finish is most likely, with the final call on JD being a toss-up.

1st of all, if you are named Michael Williams, are you destined to become a wide receiver or what?Secondly, we should have tried to trade Harvey for Williams while they were both still enrolled......maybe throw in some cash, a urinal trough, and a light pole to be named later to sweeten the deal.

Humpty Signs Ceremonial LOI
johnnyzip84 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Not that we didn't suspect this already about him, but count Poland HS coach (and UA grad) Ken Grisdale among the throng who think we're getting "a steal" in Humpty Link -
It looks like they just stopped using old, unreliable Cam #3.

Excellent list, zip81! I had forgotten how much fun those intramural games were there

Here is a link that has more detail on the properties themselves.Link

Wow that is quite the statement!! I believe the records indicate 7 seasons over .500 for UA since going 1-A in 1987, which is exactly 1/3 of the time. I'm not sure I would call 1 out of 3 chances a "given" But, as noted in the 1st post, we know CFN sucks.

Check out Top Drawer Soccer
johnnyzip84 replied to w00t's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Ken Lolla is an excellent coach, a great guy (ran into him at some coaching clinics) and a real ambassador for the sport. He should get some credit for laying the foundation of what UA soccer appears to be on the verge of. HOWEVER, it's not like the Zips were also-rans before he came aboard. Regardless of how he left his HC position, Steve Parker (NCAA D-1 Coach of the Year in 1986) obviously had the program at a pretty high level prior to Ken's arrival.
