"Badoom...boom..." LOL
-
All I know is that Coach Bowden will name a starting QB when he is comfortable doing so. And I'm confident that whoever that is, will be the best person for the job. I watched the Spring Game -- and I also looked at the stats. How ya'll can say that Dalton didn't look good is what's puzzling to me. I don't have a "dog in this fight"... I want the starter to be whoever gives us the best chance to win football games. Period.
-
He was planning to start - and play in the offense that he learned for three years. In January, SFA hired a new Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach and a new outside receivers coach....and, well - we all know what happens with coaching changes -- different schemes, etc. etc...

LOL... What should we call him? My mother always taught me not to use pronouns when talking about someone "with authority", and definitely not to call them by their first names. And personally, I believe that all of the coaches should be addressed as "Coach". Can't stand it when "reporters" like Erin Andrews address head coaches by their first names - especially when coming off the field at half time... "So, Mack - what are you going to do in the locker room to keep your QB from throwing interceptions in the second half?"... Or the famous, "So Bobby - you had 8 holding penalties in the first half... what will you do during half time to keep t hat from happening in the 2nd half?... COACH Bobby Bowden responds, "We're going to pray...."... CLASSIC Coach Bobby Bowden "melt down" (actually - after just re-watching that, she originally called him Coach, and then at the end said "thanks, Bobby"...lol)

Let's keep this very important FACT in mind: IT'S BLEACHER REPORT, PEOPLE!!!!!!

I've stated this before in another thread --- but "ponder this"... Coach Bowden really had NO CLUE about the existing QBs on the team (or any other players for that matter). Was the record and stats from the past two seasons really indicative of the ability and talent of the players? Did the film give an accurate assessment of the team? What he did know was: a) he knew the exact offense he was going to install and run and b ) he knew that Dalton KNEW that offense and was capable of running it. Does that mean that the other QBs couldn't/wouldn't learn the offense? Of course not. But in a "worse case scenario" kind of situation - he chose to bring in a QB (the most important position on the field) that he knew was able to run it effectively. He knew more about Dalton than any existing player on the team. Now, after four weeks of Spring, Coach Bowden obviously knows the QBs; what their strengths and weaknesses are, and will ultimately choose the guy to be the starter who gives us the best chance to WIN FOOTBALL GAMES. There is no question in my mind - not one iota - Coach Bowden will choose the BEST 11 players to start. He does not play favorites when it comes to the playing field. Period.

Leaf Filter (Leaf Filter Website) is a company owned by Matt Kaulig -- Matt played QB for the Zips from 1992-95, and made a very generous donation to help make the golf outing possible. I know he attended all of the alumni functions associated with the Spring Game last weekend. Thanks, Matt!!

Have skimmed this thread - not read every post.. so I apologize if I am making points already made.. First of all -- the QBs ALL rotated back and forth between the first and second team offenses. Coaches wanted to see how each of them did with the 1's. Don't forget also - that the O-line played BOTH ways the entire game.. we basically had 7 O-linemen for the entire game (due to injuries etc). Please also remember, that, yes, Dalton was a "back up at an FCS school"... but he was the backup to the WALTER PAYTON AWARD WINNER (the I-AA Heisman), Jeremy Moses. Shannon Dawson - was the Offensive Coordinator during Moses' time at SFA (with Dalton as a backup). Dawson played for Dana Holgerson at Wingate, and is now the OC at WVU. He ran the same offense that Coach Bowden runs - which means that Dalton KNOWS this offense. Here are some tidbits on that offense at SFA with Jeremy Moses as the starting QB: Stephen F. Austin - In 2010, Dawson guided the nation’s No. 1 passing offense (362.2) and No. 4 scoring offense (36.3), ranking No. 6 in total offense (442.9). - The Lumberjacks led the Southland Conference in all three categories, as well as pass efficiency (137.23) - Quarterback Jeremy Moses was a two-time All-American, two-time Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and won the Walter Payton Award, given to the Player of the Year in the NCAA FCS Division - Moses finished his career as the school and league’s all-time passer, setting records in completions (1,151), touchdown passes (121), passing yards (13,061) and total offense (12,853) - In 2009, his offensive squad led the nation in passing yards (343.7) and was No. 2 in total offense (468.9), No. 6 in scoring offense (34.9) and No. 10 in pass efficiency (147.8) - The Lumberjacks led the Southland Conference in all four categories and was second in scoring offense - Moses led the nation in touchdown passes (40), was third in passing yards (317.2), fourth in points responsible for (18.5) and fifth in total offense (320.5) So - I guess if you're going to be a backup -- not a bad guy to be playing behind. I think the game went exactly the way the coaches would have wanted it to go. The First Team Defense was the best unit on the field. Defense wins Championships - period. However, the first team offense was able to score 14 points on them - so its obvious that the guys are picking up the new offense and executing. The 2nd team offense (with the qb's rotating back and forth) did very well -- showing me again, that the offensive players are getting comfortable in the scheme. We know we have issues with depth on defense - and playmakers overall. Those issues are being addressed, and we will be in a better position in the Fall. There were a LOT more than "a few dozen people" at the game... The University was very smart - and opened the Club Level to the public. Not only because the weather was cold and rainy - but to show the fans what great amenities are available on the Club Level.. so you didn't see a lot of people sitting in the stands. I've heard only very positive remarks about the attendance --- at least double last year's. Good things are in store for 2012!

The "vision" one isn't terrible....
-
I don't think that will happen. He'll end up somewhere, but I doubt CO has a scholly available at this point. I could be wrong - just hope Patrick goes where he wants to and get the playing time he wants as well.
-
Been saying that since I saw the schedule! Go Zips! Beat UCF!
-
This is the worst part about college football. So many kids get caught in the middle of situations that are beyond their control - and most of them do not thrive/survive them. I hope that Patrick finds a place to play this coming season - and that his season is everything he wants it to be. I can guarantee that Coach Bowden will help him in whatever ways he can - whether it's guiding him to the right program, or giving recommendations, etc.
-
My point was that the other poster said that his QB had to had a shotgun for an arm and the rest of it could be coached. Thats just not an accurate statement - especially in this offense.
-
Especially since one of the pictures they used has Zach at QB... Not only did he switch to WR over a week ago, but he separated his shoulder. Take some new pics!!!

You are exactly right. Take a look at what Coach Bowden did at North Alabama for the past three seasons... Whether people liked it or not, he brought in a lot of Division 1A transfers - many of them with degrees and one year of eligibility left. Guys from BCS Schools that for any number of reasons, weren't getting a lot of playing time, and wanted to play more. Reasons may have been a change of coaching staff, injury previous seasons, team's needing to get to that 85 number and wanting to play younger/"their" players, etc... Coach Bowden had guys like that from FSU, UF, UM, North Carolina, NC State, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Navy, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Auburn, Alabama, USF...... His connections/friends in the coaching community give him a unique advantage in these types of situations. There is probably a coach on the staff of almost every team in the country that has either played for, played with, coached with, or coached for A Coach Bowden.

Here's the link ... spring practice report - April 7 It all sounded pretty good to me - except for the turnovers... But it's hard to really be too concerned about that because one of the most important stats in football is FORCED Turnovers (more so than TO margin). So even though the offense gave up the turnovers, our defense forced them

I also get a kick out of the people outside of the south that find "dadgum" different and "catchy".... But honestly, it is going to be the people in the Akron area that will be buying the bulk of merchandise, and also be buying tickets to the games. And if some national publicity helps sell some extra stuff - and turn some people into Zips fans - all the better!
-
No offense to you, at all, DrZ, but "Your QB"? I thought it was Coach Bowden's offense/system and his QB? A strong arm is necessary to a point - but accuracy, good decision making, and a keen understanding of the offense is more important than a "gun" in this offense. Certain things cannot be coached - poise under pressure is one of them. Let's hope that these guys keep pushing each other to be better - and that the coaching staff is happy to name a starter in the fall.

Love the coverage! CBSSports Blog

GREAT stories on the QBs, George. What I love to hear the most is that these guys are out there pushing each other to be better - and seemingly having fun doing it. Egos cannot get in the way of the ultimate goal - which is for the TEAM to win games... And it sounds like these kids are on board with that philosophy. Coach Bowden has always said that every player, whether he's the starting QB or the 3rd string left guard, has to be 100% ready when his number is called. You never know what will happen in a game or a season - and we need every player to believe that he has to give maximum effort every day so that he'll be ready if he's needed. Go back to 1993... Auburn was 10-0, and playing their last game of the season - against Alabama... Who is not only their hated rival, but were also the defending national champions. Auburn was losing in the 3rd quarter, when starting QB Stan White got injured on a (I think) 3rd down play at about the 35 of Bama. While Coach Bowden was frantically searching the sideline for his back up, Pat Nix, he finally turned to the field and saw Pat already at the huddle waiting for the play to be signaled in. Too far for a field goal, and too close for a punt, he called a pass - Pat hadn't seen the field all year, and hadn't even warmed up on the sideline. He floated a perfect pass to Frank Sanders for a TD and Auburn went on to win the game, and finish Coach Bowden's first season at Auburn with a perfect 11-0 record. Coach tells that story a lot - because it absolutely epitomizes his philosophy that every player must prepare like he will play in the game, and be the guy who makes the play that wins the game.

I like it... I've just always had a weird aversion to the word "jock".....

Just in case ya'll didn't know about the football team's facebook page.. they've been doing a good job of taking pictures at practice and posting them (looks like they got a new camera today -- thank goodness!). Make sure you check the page/pictures out!Zips Football Facebook Page - Spring Practice #8 Pics

Its a really fun format. That's how he did it at North Alabama -- and the game got EXTREMELY competitive! And don't be surprised if the game is close toward the end, if Coach Bowden doesn't change a rule or two on the fly to make it even more exciting!

Coach Bowden has done a Coach's show at every program he's coached at (except for Salem I think). They can be valuable in many different ways - obviously if done correctly Depending upon what the objective is - would depend on what type of show it is, where/when it airs, etc... There is no other head coach in the country with more television/radio/media experience than Coach Bowden (I would say that Bob Davies has a lot -- but his is just bad.. IMO). I'm sure if the AD wants to make it happen - he will!

Care to elaborate?
