  1. False correlation? A correlation is a correlation. Causation, ah there's another issue. A really good way to test this possibility would be for the coaches to coach free throw shooting to half the team and not the other half. Then at the end of the season, compare the percentage of free throws made by each group.

You're right causation, instead of correlation my mistake. But I'm not talking about the "coaching" part, I'm saying it's not even the coaching at all.

  2. We blame teachers when kids can spell or add... when a coach allows his entire team to be one of the worst FT shooting teams in the country, it is his fault.

That's already a false correlation. There are those that blame teachers for kids that can't spell or add...but more often than not it isn't the teacher at all. To use a cliché, you can lead a horse to water...but you can't make them drink.

  3. troubled players are problems we don't need. let someone else baby sit a kid who does not have the common sense to realize he has been given a gift and pissed it away.

Well with Tressel and Bowden here, I doubt you'll get your wish on that. Outside of Auburn, Bowden has built a career around nabbing those talented problem-children and giving them a second chance. *cough* Avis Commack *Cough* CJ Mizell...come to mind as "troubled" kids who got a second chance with Bowden. What you want is a coach who can evaluate whether or not that person could successfully use the second chance, and you need a coach that makes the player work for it. I believe Bowden is that kind of coach.

  4. UCF proves with a 52-42 victory over the Baylor Bears, that they were indeed to the best team on our schedule.

This should also give us all hope on what is possible for a team, given the right coach and regardless of the other instate schools. Our goal as a team should be to reach the level of success that the Knights have. I do believe it is possible with Bowden at the helm. Find those diamonds in the rough like Bortles and keep good relations to snag transfers (like Johnson).

    What do you guys think?

  5. Nobody believes that Keith Dambrot is the best college basketball coach in America -- not himself, his wife, his children or even his dog. A lot of people, including me, believe that he's the best college basketball coach for UA. Any coach as good or better than Coach Dambrot but without connections and loyalty to UA would be gone to a higher-paying school the minute the Zips had a successful season or two. A string of coaches would likely produce more who are worse than Coach Dambrot than better, given the level of resources UA allocates to the program.

Nope, the only way the Zips get 7 consecutive 22+ win seasons and 7 consecutive trips to the conference championship game is with Coach Dambrot. If it was easy, a lot of coaches would replicate that. Try making a list of all the D1 coaches in the country who've done it, then give them a call and see if any would be willing to come to UA and sit in Coach Dambrot's plush office at the JAR for the same salary. Is it worth playing musical chairs with coaches for a chance at one who might possibly lead the Zips past the first round of the NCAA tournament one season only to move on to a better job offer with the possibility that his replacement puts the Zips in the MAC cellar?

Is it fair to criticize Coach Dambrot for things we perceive he could do better? Heck yes. The only thing not open to criticism is perfection, which means that everything is open to criticism. But there's a huge difference between educated, constructive criticism and sour grapes potshotting. An honest discussion requires that each of us acknowledges that we are fans and not great experts on all the technical intricacies of college basketball. We also must acknowledge that we don't have access to all the facts about individual members of the coaching staff and the players. At that point we can begin having a reasonable and respectful discussion about what we think might be happening and what we think might be ways to improve things.

  6. like a zips said. if you don't like the team. don't go to the games. nobody is forcing anyone to watch them tv. maybe it makes some middle age zip fans

better about themselves. when the rip on teenagers, and kids in their early 20's who just lost a game.one of the football coaches iust died in a car wreck.

that's real life, and a terrible thing to happen to someone. losing a basketball game does not mean anything compared to that. judge not and you will not be judged. maybe some of you might want to remember that when you are posting.

What the heck are you talking about? This is a fan forum...where fans come to talk about their team. Both the good and the Bad. Of course we're going to rip on the team, as well as sing their praises. And we're not "judging" anyone other than that which they can be judged...the play on the arena. Yes we had a coach die at Akron (not basketball), we had one of the coaches nephews die as well (not basketball) and a coach who is fighting cancer (Basketball). That is tough, but it isn't likely a large contributing factor to this team. The reason we are losing games seems to be systemic of something else, and we the fans are discussing that, voicing our concern about it.

Did you ever consider that we may be criticizing these early 20's somethings because we believe they aren't living up to the potential that we know they have? Remember that yourself before bashing your fellow fans.

  7. I'm in California so I can only see the Zips on tv this year. But man, does this team have any sort of chemistry on offense?

Please tell me it's just SC's tough defense, because we are looking bad. If SC's shots were falling - and thank God they are not - we'd be down by 20 in this lst half.

IMO it's SC's defense. We looked much better against Oregon St. This version of the Zips will be just fine in conference play where the competiton is considerably less. The question I have is: How in the world is South Carolina 4-6? They seem like they are legit better than their record.

  8. Some good bowl games involving MAC teams today: Pitt vs. BUGS and Utah State vs. NIU. The lazy day after Christmas is a great date for the MAC's two best teams to be featured.

It'll be great to see Lynch's last game as a player in the MAC. He's been tearing us all up for long enough.

I'll be watching Pitt, specifically the non-seniors, because we'll be seeing them next year.

  9. They sure as Hell had better play better than that disaster we saw yesterday.

100% agree with you. I was completely and utterly embarrassed. On Christmas I asked my extended family if we could watch the Akron basketball game together (because its not usually televised and we all like sports). Out of 10 of us, this was the first Akron basketball game for 7 of them. And I'm embarrassed I even suggested it to my family, because they will not forget watching Akron completely go to sleep and lose a winnable game. Here I was talking up all the good points of Akron basketball to only be made to eat my words. :tomato::mad_flame:

Instead of possibly going into conference play with a 10-3 record and a 4 game winning streak, we're now starring at possibly worse than 9-4, which is what we had last year. I still believe overall this team is better than last year, but we seem to lack leadership. I see a bunch of Lieutenants out there, no generals, or even captains. There will be no Top 25 ranking for us, unless we sweep the MAC. And even that is unlikely.

  10. I look at it this way. If the Zips come out of today with a W that will put them 2-1 for the tournament with wins over the PAC-12 and SEC and the only loss coming to a top-15 program out of the Big 12. I think if you asked any Zips fan to give a realistic best case scenario headed into this tournament that was probably it (or close to it). Then we get to go out over the weekend and play the same SEC team we already beat on their floor. If we come out of that with a W then we get to come back home for two straight very winnable home games against Coppin State and Marshall to end the OOC season. Win those two and our OOC record winds up at 10-3 with the worst loss being @MTSU (not a bad loss by any stretch of the imagination). We would have two wins over the SEC, one win over the PAC-12, two over Horizon League opponents and one against CUSA. I can make a strong case that, despite all of the hand wringing that has gone on around here, that this would be our best OOC showing under KD.

+1. This is exactly how I feel on the subject. We all want to be playing top opponents (and winning those games)...but to steal a term from the Browns coaching staff..."continued, sustained success"...whereas the Browns don't actually show it...the Zips ARE showing it. There was supposed to be a drop off with the loss of Zeke in our performance, I don't see it. In fact, I dare say we're better than last year overall across the board as a team.

  11. I'm not ready to think about next season. I have confidence in Coach Dambrot bringing in a steady stream of talent. But after each season starts I file that away under future assumptions and focus on the present. The Zips have two tough games on the road coming up over the next few days. I want to see how resilient they are. You know, a couple of weeks ago we thought the Zips were never going to come together enough to beat anyone. Then they started beating some mid-level teams and we started getting more optimistic. Now we know they haven't come together to the point of beating the #14 team in the country at this point in the season and that makes us a little pessimistic. I don't think the Zips are done improving. Let's see how good they can get and how fast they can get there.

:mad_flame: I think a lot of people are hitting the panic button. Dare I say it: this team is better than last year's. We're winning (early) the games we're supposed to win, and losing the games we should be struggling to win. Yes it sucks, but last year we were losing games we were SUPPOSED to be winning. (Coastal, Detroit...). We have a good chance of going into conference play with a better record against better opponents than we had last year...what more could we want?

Now, hopefully the Zips won't make me eat my positive words of support. :CK_brew:

  12. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this thing set up so that the loser of our game this afternoon will face the loser of the other semifinal game (South Carolina or Boise State) while the winners of those two games face each other?

I don't think SMU's value is dropping. They lost one game on a neutral site to an SEC team. Hardly time for them to push the panic button.

Actually you're right, sorry I looked at the bracket wrong There is no chance that we would face SMC again, you are correct. Phew at least that clears that up. Sorry, I should have drank my coffee before reading the bracket.

I'm not saying push the panic button, I'm saying it looks better to have lost to an undefeated team.

The loser of game 6 (Iowa/Akron) will face the loser of game 7 (S. Carolina/Boise St.) in game 11, which is for third place. So to wrap that up for everyone, with our in in round one, we have guaranteed ourselves at least 4th place. Now that the explanation is out of the way...lets go for first! :gun:

  13. Final : S. Carolina 78 St Mary's 71

I can't quite tell if this is good or bad...if we lost against Iowa good chance we're up against SMU...which I'm not a fan of...if we win, well then we don't have to play SMU again but that means SMU's value is dropping...

Or we could just not worry about it, as long as the Zips take care of business today! GO ZIPS!
