To get us past our lingering disappointment, I thought it was a good time to start looking forward. Last year, I started the Looking Forward thread to take the focus away from the end of the season griping. This year, we’re in a much different place.
Our Zips have gone from 15 wins to 17 wins to 24 wins and a MAC championship under John Groce. Assuming the NCAA doesn’t allow seniors to return, the Zips look to lose Cheese, X, Banks and Riak from the regular rotation. Stepping in are Dailey, Curry, Trimble, Clarke and Edwards. Of course, this could always change (see Eric Hester).
It will be interesting to see what Groce does with this slate of players next year. If I had to bet, I could see a starting five of LCJ, Trimble, Dailey, Curry and Reece. Tribble could be in the starting five but I could see Groce not starting him with an eye towards using him quite a bit as both the primary backup at the point and at the 2. Ali and Dawson should also see quite a few minutes. Clarke should also see some minutes as he settles in. I’m not sure what they have in Edwards.
I think next year’s squad won’t shoot the three as well as this team, but they will be deeper, more physical, and may rebound and defend better. I think Zips fans will love Maishe Dailey. He’s long, plays hard and is a likable kid. I loved how he supported the team from the bench this year.
It’s going to be tough to top this year’s special team but I think next year’s version will be fun too. I think the community is finally starting to get it so we’re going to see better crowds and some rocking nights at the JAR.

I would like to give a shout out and well done to the above and also Clark Griswold who predicted the 3 guard starting rotation of Jackson Banks and Cheese along with Riak and Williams. I was always concerned about the number of transfers but you were correct that Groce was just getting players who wanted to be in his system and would work within his system. Nobody predicted that Groce would be coach of the year or that Jackson would be player of the year. The Zips finished the season strong and beat Buffalo in Buffalo. I cannot remember the last time that happened. We had a great season!!! It just ended too soon.
Thanks.
I guess it is about time for me to roll out a "2020-2021 Akron Zips Basketball- Looking Forward" thread.

We should all be basking in the glow of a MAC championship and be repeatedly glancing at the clock to see if it's time to leave for the JAR for the selection watch party, but instead, nobody has posted in 14 hours. Sigh. LIFE AIN'T FAIR.

Not surprised with Toledo's transfers. They had a wildly disappointing season.

Surprised they shut down all contact. I could see shutting down direct contact. Maybe they should leave phone contact open. I hear Mr. Pinky is good at that.

I can't trust the NCAA to come up with any rational plan for this and they would never permit a private entity to step in and do something.

I say only give an additional year to those who were going to play in the Tourney.
I think the spring athletes should get it for sure. As to basketball, not sure I am on board with it in general, but if they do go with it, it should just be the tourney kids who lost out.

Do the Zips get the MAC Championship trophy?
It's presently being held in a vat of Lysol in the MAC offices.

Show me a coach that doesn't want a senior coming back after this and I'll show you a coach that won't be there for long
John Calipari. He wants kids to be so good they jump to the NBA after a year!

I'm a big fan of the Tribble dunk coming down the baseline in the OU comeback.
Great thread idea NWAkron.

Will they wear the blue, gold or grey hazmat suits?

Think about the precedent being set by all this panic. Anytime there is a cold going around people are going to want to close off sporting events/schools/public gatherings. This is a very slippery slope.
Christ man. This reaction has some science and experience behind it. This is not the damn cold. I don't think panic does anyone good, but it is obvious some people need educated. These aren't schlubs making these calls, it's our best and brightest.

MAC website headline still states Quarterfinal MACtion Heats Up The FieldHouse Today
Ugh.

Awful job by the NCAA in not providing the leadership to have a consistent response from the conferences and having this all come down to the last minute.

So I'm thinking there won't be a selection watch party in the JAR.

One correction to the initial post - they're still playing these at the Rock, right? As awesome as it would be to have our fanless game at home, I don't think they moved to campus sites?
OU starts VERY fast, but burns out just as quick. The last time they didn't win the first half was back on Feb 18th, but the only second half they won was against Kent. I hope that tired legs keeps them a little down in the first half, because if we can survive that in good shape, I'm confident in the Zips ability to shut down their game in the last 20.
It's tough growing old and feeble minded! I fixed it.

Preston is so good at penetrating and scoring or dishing when the help comes. Here's hoping Banks can shut some of that down. He's a good three point shooter too, so you have to pick your poison. I'd pick him shooting threes with a hand in his face. As for Vander Plas, he's hurt the Zips down inside by repeatedly backing down whoever is on him. They need to muscle him up and stand their ground.

This thread can remain the coronavirus debate thread. To actually discuss the game-

The Zips head into a fanless Rocket Mortgage Field House today to face the Bobcats. The Bobcats placed Preston on the All-MAC second team and Vander Plas on the third team yesterday. Vander Plas was injured in the game a couple of weeks ago against the Zips, but seems to be back at full speed having played 36 minutes, scored 28 points and pulled down 12 rebounds Monday night against CMU. The Zips beat the Snobcats by 7 at the JAR and 2 in Athens.

Well how about you unite us and distract us with a Game Thread for today. You've made 'em all season and now, TOURNEY TIME, you don't?! We're doomed...
Good call Let'sGoZips. I was going to just do one thread for the whole tourney, but given how this has come down an individual thread would be in order.
