Tom Wistrcill Resigns. Larry Williams hired.
skip-zip replied to zippy_ua_00's topic in Other Sports
Ahhh...yes, you caught that too Keener? Except that he said "Saturday Morning", and I hope he's not too disappointed in a couple of weeks when only some will be tailgating that early, because of the late game -
Can you still watch it with that $10 "trial" that I reported about earlier?

Plain Dealer Giving OSU Some Bad Publicity For A Change
skip-zip replied to zip-O-matic's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Sometimes the stories simply speak for themselves. That would be the case here. -
Yes, my "Fall Guy" did it.
-
I hope I didn't alarm anyone with the $54.99 to watch the Oklahoma game. The 7-Day trial is only $10. Why wouldn't someone just keep ordering 7-day trials? Maybe I should let someone else with more PPV knowledge figure this one out.

Hey Guys....I don't know if this has been discussed at all yet.... I was browsing around a bit on Oklahoma's site, and I started following the links for the Oklahoma Pay-Per-View instructions for the Akron game, and I get to a place where you can purchase it for $54.99 ?????? Wow. Sounds like a bar sort of package? I wonder if anyone will have it, so I can go watch it in the corner of a bar somewhere with all of their barmaids walking around in Suckeyes attire.

I'm assuming everyone has seen the story by now about the comments to rookie NFL players coming from one of our fellow former #TeamOhio guys, advising them to get a "Fall Guy" in case they get in trouble. If you've read the entirety of his comments, it's even more shocking that he didn't stop and kept digging a deeper hole. And it appears as if he may have never attended any of his college English classes. It also makes me feel sorry for all of the people out there who are hitting the pavement and begging for careers in sports broadcasting, and have to watch this guy on TV.

I'll take the win with the greatest impact. And that would undoubtedly be Oklahoma. I don't know why anyone would see that any differently. I also continue to feel differently than some of you who lump the Penn State game in with others in which we played "really close". That's a stretch for me. We may have played close early, just like we did a Tennessee. But, the performances against Michigan and Pitt are truly in an entirely different category than Penn State.
-
I think that the Michigan and Pitt games the last couple of years, along with the previous Syracuse and NC State games, give some people hope that big things can happen every time we're faced with these opportunities. I like the idea that we'll play a high ranked team, whether it's justified or not. It ensures that we'll be on the score updates all day long. And football fans across American will pay attention if we can stay in this game for awhile. Any thoughts of a monumental upset, or a close game, would be an unbelievable bonus.

Scarborough's next move...

Fortunately, "The Arts" covers a wide range of academic areas besides an area where someone might have learned how to create an animated YouTube video. I am an "Arts" alum from an entirely different area, so please don't lump me with these guys. -
Right Balsy. Because the plan to get it done doesn't matter when you are campaigning. There will certainly be many more community improvement that they are "for" right now.
-
Exactly !! Remember, the other mayor was "for it" also.

1) You don't need to worry about what the Republicans have to say. Akron won't elect a Republican. Too many people still living in Akron proper who are leftovers from the old Union days, and believe in big government. I'll leave it at that, and spare you all from a political rant. 2) I would guess that anyone running for a local mayoral office would say that they are in favor of a lot of different improvements to the community. 3) Let me hear the chosen one talk about it AFTER he's in office and he needs to explain to everyone how it's going to be funded. Dave, I sure wish it meant something. But, it probably doesn't.

Scarborough's next move...

Sadly, the final nail has been put in the coffin. Without travelers, restaurant patrons, and retail shoppers, everything that was left was doomed for good the moment it was not going to be used as a hotel any longer. And the beginning of the end may have actually been 20 years ago when the once-vibrant theme bars in the complex started to close. I already miss being able to drop off and pick up people, both business and person, from such a unique place. Most people were so awestruck by it. As a "college campus building" it just seems like such a waste to me. -
This is going to go over like a lead balloon. . .

I have a few thoughts... 1) I hated that the NCAA made this ruling. I think it's a move to push all of the "non-big schools" aside. 2) The fact that we are going to do it shows that we want to try to remain competitive, and that's not bad news. It's an investment in making sure that we are out there recruiting athletes with the same "financial package" that others can offer. 3) It still sucks because it's something that was forced upon us, and we have no choice. 4) At least the NLRB "Unionization" ruling went our way the other day. Glad to see that someone believes that a Free College Education is a great deal to play a sport, and that setting the stage for college athletes to collect some of the money made by their schools is a horrible idea from a competitive standpoint. -

Morris....if this implies that nobody is paying attention, so it doesn't matter, that would be a bad assumption. Again, Students and Athletes who are being recruited by Akron are hearing this news, because they are tuned into what's going on at the U that they are considering attending. And in the short term, that's the most painful and damaging part of this bad PR. -
Tom Wistrcill Resigns. Larry Williams hired.

At this point, I think it might be fair to have some apprehension about how he's bounced around a bit. But, the diversity of his experience and accomplishments is looking pretty good, and includes some areas where we desperately need to raise the bar. I'm not sure why anyone has anything to gripe about right now. With the guys who pulled their applications, this was potentially starting to look like we'd have to end up giving the job to whoever wanted it. I'm glad it didn't end up that way. -

I find it rather silly for someone to imply any link to failure because others who they deem as unsuccessful once worked at the same University. If you thought someone was a boob who once worked at a particular company, would you have a fear of the ability of everyone else that ever worked at that company? Who knows. The Gerry connection may have even been the reason why we were able to attract someone with Larry's kind of background. And although people will debate forever about Gerry's college coaching ability, I will forever acknowledge all of the work he did to get us started in D-1A, under very lean circumstances, and all of the great former players who I've gotten to know who rave about how much he did to develop them as players and people. Lumping Gerry and Rob I. in the same conversation is just ridiculous. -

I just got the announcement in my e-mail. Williams is the choice. Congratulations. I hope he can do the job. Edit: Hey, what is this I am seeing about him leading Marquette's entry into a bigger conference? -
Scarborough's next move...
skip-zip replied to urbanpreppie05's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
No, it's called "Taking an action without enough forethought, that ended up not being necessary in the first place, which added to your already-existing pubic relations nightmare when you are a public University that relies upon impressing potential students and athletes". That is infinitely more damaging than a Coach making a wrong decision on a starting player, etc., then reversing his decision. -
Dave, Been there, done that. I know how players are listed. What seemed odd was that nobody had accurate info., but it appears that this is now coming up. And thanks for the additional information. I agree that there's potential for a post player there, with those figures, and another year of high school remaining. Lets just hope he doesn't stop growing, but can keep himself somewhat on the lean side with the weight.

Scarborough's next move...

More than anything else, this makes me very concerned that cuts are being made without thorough consideration. But to those on the outside, it sure is going to appear as if nobody knows what they are doing. -
I have an enduring image of Coach Junko standing on our sidelines in that big, old Red Sweatshirt (so he could be seen easily), with his hands on his knees, watching every defensive play. I still wish he would have become our new head coach in 1994. Who knows how that might have changed things.

Spin...lets not give too much credit to the old Acme/Zip games as "brilliant marketing". It wasn't great creative work that drove fans to want to get on board with Zips Football. It was a one-time, city-wide effort to use a grocery chain to give away tickets for practically nothing. It was not a revenue stream for Akron Athletics, and likely trained the local target market to come to one game a year to hang out with friends for a night because it was practically Free. The short term buzz was great. The excitement at the start of games was great (before everyone exited at halftime). But, in my professional opinion, there really wasn't much to the marketing itself beyond announcing that you could get tickets for a few dollars at the grocery store. Selling $25 seats today, which makes money for Athletics, is a far more challenging task that takes "real' marketing.....meaning, more than a billboard on I-77 that says "tickets on sale now".
