  1. Sometime yesterday, we passed Cocky as the overall #1 in the running for the Mascot of the Year contest.I know I am preaching to the choir here, but we need to start burying some of these opponents while we have the chance. And remember, regardless of our overall vote total, we still need to win our head-to-head matchups from week to week. And this week's contest is still VERY CLOSE. However, the first two weeks seem to be showing that Akron fans are voting more than any other school. This is probably our best chance ever to get NATIONAL exposure for our school.Let's KEEP IT GOING !!!
  2. I'm going to assume at this point that the goal of such an idea is to combine administrative and management functions since it says "The TWO schools would then function under a single leader".I would not think that this is a consolidation in terms of a name change for both schools, or combining athletic programs. Lets hope not.
  3. I just finally picked up today's ABJ, and on the front cover of the sports section is a picture in the top corner of Ohio State's running back Wells putting a nasty stiff-arm on Davanzo Tate of the Zips. Now, I know that it is in reference to a story inside the paper about Wells, who is an Akron product. But was that necessary? This is AKRON, and it showed an Akron Zips player getting pretty much run over by a player from another college. So, here's my question...Would the Columbus paper, in the process of doing a story about an Akron Zips football player who is from Columbus, show a picture of that player putting a mean stiff-arm on a Buckeye's player?I'd say.......NOT A CHANCE IN HELL.
  4. Flip..you can also vote every day.As of 4:44 pm, we are not only leading Hokie Bird in our weekly matchup, but are now within 70 votes of overtaking Cocky for the overall lead.Let's keep the momentum going !!
  5. Bobbyake...very nice. Gave me a good laugh.
  6. That seems just about impossible to see that from Route 8, unless there are no leaves on the trees, and you are really looking. Which means you better be the passenger.
  7. Ok...I'd do it to support the Zips, but I hated wearing those things, expecially those kind that you had to stretch over your existing shoes.
  8. As far as MAC title hopes go, this game is almost "must win". And you hate to think that your first conference game can possibly be "must win".We'll only have 3 more home games after this one, and two of those are against Ohio and Central, the two best teams in our league last year. And with road games upcoming at Miami, BG, Western Michigan, and an improved Buffalo team, we'd have quite a struggle to get the 5 or 6 wins necessary to win the East, if we lose this one. zen....I know some people might think that the respect you get from the national pollsters doesn't mean much. Sure, the game is played on the field. But what bothers me is that with Can't and Akron both winning again, Can't is getting more respect because of it. And down the road, that matters quite a bit when it comes to bowl bids and national rankings. As Al Davis says....."Just Win Baby"
  9. Everyone remember....just because Zippy is the 2nd highest overall vote getter at this point, we will still drop WAY down in the standings if we lose this week, and slip to a 1-1 record.
  10. You have to admit......it certainly exemplifies Can't Statecks much more than an eagle, or whatever the heck kind of bird they use.Nice work Captain.Oh, by the way, for those of you who weren't at the road game at Can't last year, be prepared for the "Screw The Roo" and "Fear This" t-shirts. I guess they can't come up with something catchy for their own team, so it's much easier to just degrade the creative phrases used by their opponents.
  11. I know some of you have commented that you don't mind going into this game as an underdog, but it bothers me.1) Can't and Akron have both made improvements to their programs over the last few years, but Can't is getting more respect for it.2) We should NEVER be an underdog at HOME in a MAC game.
  12. It's at capitalonebowl.com. Just set up a user name, and vote. And keep going back.
  13. It was just about this time last week that everyone rallied to give Zippy an edge over our Week #1 opponent, a lead that we never relinquished.Zippy needs help again. As of this morning, we still trail Hokie Bird in week #2, an opponent that looks to be strong in this competition, and which we only face one time in a head-to-head matchup.Let's go Zips fans!!
  14. It's always cool to return to the Rubber Bowl parking lot after a 10 month absence. In fact, even though we're all looking forward to the new stadium, I will sincerely miss tailgating there.Sounds like quite a few people will be there early. It should be a great atmosphere.
  15. NO WAY that Can't can get in the end zone more than twice on our defense.Akron - 27Can't - 17
  16. I'm telling you guys.....I've been watching Akron football for almost 30 years, and I have seen few players as dependable as John Mackey when it comes to making a tackle. Actually, when someone is as good as him, you notice when he does NOT make a tackle. Because it happens that infrequently.
  17. zipsrifle...I'm sure that was JD intension, that these first three games would get the new offensive line somewhat prepared for conference play.I'm sure they've learned quite a bit. But, on Saturday we'll find out just how much.
  18. All we can do is hope that this is the right move. Jackson could do more to help us, but will he hurt us too? We'll see.
  19. Getting fired up for this game, and supporting our team vocally, is the only thing we can do as fans. It's time to start getting ready. It looks like we are the underdog, at home, and I wasn't expecting that. Not in a divisional game. This is going to be a very important game for us, and we have to win with it being a home game.Ok...let me get the pep rally started... not in our house on the blue and yellow And let's hope the 12pm start does not discourage the casual Rubber Bowl tailgaters. I plan on early Friday night, and being at the lot at sunrise with .
  20. Isn't that what a QB rating is designed to measure? All factors considered?
  21. He is a great kid. This is a well-deserved honor. I think he will be missed the most out of all the players on that defense next year.
  22. Good post K-Roo.We have to keep the momentum going. It's a whole new week, and Hokie Bird looks to be one of the higher total vote recipients in the competition.
  23. Just a few more FACTS for those couple of you who might be thinking that the Browns' organization has done a fine job of evaluating their quarterback talent. Here's the current stats of another recent Browns' QB who took the blame for the team's poor play. After all, a guy who is this BAD, got sacked repeatedly, and eventually was cut, HAD to be the reason why they lost so many games while he was under center. 2007 - Jeff GarciaCompletion Pct. - 67.4 thru 2 gamesNO Interceptions thru 2 gamesPlusQB Rating of 145.8 yesterday against New Orleans (wow..can you have a rating that high??)And, he's led the Eagles to the NFC Championship game since leaving the Browns.Image where we "could" have been at this point with our QBs, with Garcia starting, and someone like Frye learning under his mentorship for a few years. Especially since they both have very similar playing styles. One can only imagine now.
  24. If I were a betting man, I'd also say that water fountains are omitted intentionally to force people to pay $3 for a bottle of water.
