If we're listed as a 4 point underdog, in a MAC game, at home, then we're obviously not getting much respect out there. It's up to the team to get better as the season goes along. Not much we can do about it except cheer them on.
-
I'm only going to say that I believe that BG is the team to beat right now. I'm not thinking Ohio is that good right now (at least defensively), but we'll have to wait and see how this plays out.
-
And just for the record, that's a 136.7 Rating as opposed to Anderson's 121.0 yesterday. So, yes, it's better. In fact, that's a pretty big difference. But, I'm sure you'll argue that too, just for the sake of trying to irritate someone.
-
I guess you just like to argue, sgm. I can't see any other reason why you say some of the things that you say.You were obviously trying to say that Charlie's never had a great game, and you would be wrong.
-
sgm..sorry dude. I know you love bashing Charlie Frye, but the "when has Frye performed this well, ever" comment tells me just how often you blurt out your own rhetoric, as opposed to paying attention to what is actually FACT.Charlie Frye - 136.7 QB Rating in win over Jacksonville on 12/4/05.Take that to the bank.

My thoughts are much more in line with Zen...Anderson played a career game today, but didn't suddenly become a good quarterback in one week. He's been with the team for two years, has been repeatedly maligned for having poor accuracy and making bad reads, and has only now become the starter because there's nobody else prepared to start at this point.Beyond that, the offensive unit didn't suddenly become world-beaters in one week either. Look at the tape, and you'll see wide open receivers all day. And some of them Anderson COMPLETELY MISSED!! Plus, I have news for you, Jamal Lewis isn't a 10 yard per carry running back either. By all means, SOMEONE PLEASE go back and look for my posts from Monday or Tuesday. I said that people would see the Browns' offense look much better against Cincinnati's 30th ranked NFL defense, and everyone would be saying, "See?..changing QBs has made all the difference in the world."And that is exactly what happened.Beyond these thoughts....I am a Browns fan, and I know better than to expect too much, knowing that Baltimore's defense will likely bring us right back down to reality again next week.

And we wouldn't whip Delaware State also? A game like that tells us NOTHING about Can't State.
-
Buckzip....I won't attack you, but simply ask you to look at BCS teams vs. the MAC teams twenty years ago, and look at how much more competitive these games are now. When we beat NC State last year, that would have gotten BIG TIME NATIONAL HEADLINES back in the 80's. BGs win over Minnesota this year would have as well. But these days, those kinds of wins are much more common. And since you are a Buckeyes fan, do you really think it would have been even remotely possible for us to hold OSU to 20 points (2007) and 28 points (2001) back in the 80's?When scholarships were reduced from 95 to 85 a few years ago, the top level schools were unable to "stockpile" as much talent as they had been able to do previously. So, where are these players going? You're right, they are slipping to teams further and further down the line.Using pure logic alone, there is no other possible conclusion but to assume that teams will continue to become more and more competitive with one another in D-1A.

GP1...I don't think Akron gives up on recruiting good defensive lineman. Historically, it's just one of those positions where few big-time recruits slip down to the mid-major schools.
-
Did the ABJ even send anyone to cover the game?
-
And an update on Nate Robinson's injury. I don't suppose we'll hear much until JD's weekly press conference. I'm actually quite pleased (finally) with Nate's contributions through the first 3 games.
-
Buckzip and Zippy Rulz...your points are well taken concerning the Defensive Linemen. That traditionally is one of the hardest areas to recruit for mid-major schools. This explains why so many teams at our level run 3-4 defenses. With John Mackey on the field at the Rover position, we essentially are running a 3-4 most of the time as well. What caused me the most frustration yesterday is that we DID appear to have a "spy" linebacker in the middle of the field watching the QB most of the times he decided to run. The problem was, with that much open field, and one guy there to watch him simply just could not catch him. That QB was just brutally fast. I'm not sure that I want to look at it as anything other than that at this point.

Buckzip....Indiana's offense racked up 41 points yesterday on the same Akron defense that kept your Buckeyes out of the end zone for nearly 3 quarters the week before. If I were you, I'd probably be very wary about passing judgement on Indiana. But heck, people are entitled to say whatever they want to say.My comments about Can't were about Can't, and what I think about their resume so far. It had nothing to do with how I felt about Akron. Z.I.P. - Iowa State has lost to Northern Iowa too. So, I'm certainly not going to call Can't's win over them to be anything to write home about at this point. Maybe Iowa State is turning the corner, and will prove to be much better than everyone first thought. We'll see.

Lone Zip...we get into the "change conferences" discussion quite frequently on here. The answer to that question is really simple to me. We won't attract the attention of any conference bigger and better than the MAC as long as 5,000 people show up to our home football games. It's that simple.
-
Very interesting analysis. Rushing and containing the QB in the pocket appears to be the weakness of this defensive scheme. Bring extra LBs or DBs to help with the rush, and the middle of the field opens up. Rush only 3 guys, and the QB has too much time. Not sure what the solution is here. But whatever it is, as GP1 says, you can't change a defensive scheme overnight.
-
Actually, the Can't game was moved to 12pm, but was originally scheduled for a LATER time.
-
GP1...let me add to your thoughts....Can't has beaten an AWFUL Iowa State team, got blown out by Kentucky, and beat up on a Delaware State team that plays I-AA.Not sure I'd call that an impressive resume at this point.
-
I'm not sure at this point what some of you are thinking who are predicting MAC titles and bowl appearances. When looking at our schedule, we'll have to beat both Can't AND Ohio at home to even be in the race. Then, if we accomplish that, we'll then have to go beat Miami and BGSU on the road to win the MAC East. The schedule doesn't work very well in our favor for a bowl bid either. If we can win all of our home games, and can win on the road at Buffalo (no easy task this year), we'll still only be a .500 team. And running the table at home includes beating both Can't and Ohio, and the season finale at home against Central Michigan, maybe the best team in either MAC division this year. Bottom Line: We are going to need at least one big road victory just to be bowl eligible.
-
BG is much better, and so is Buffalo. That is not good news. Can't beat a BAD Iowa State team, got crushed by Kentucky, and won today against 1-AADelaware State I'd be hard pressed to say that Can't looks good.
-
Yes, we'll need an inspired preformance to win next Saturday. We've struggled since early last season with QB's that can run. Central Michigan and Can't were the glaring examples. Yes, Can't will bring a similar package at us next week, but I can assure you that Edelman is not as blazing fast as the Indiana QB.

If we want to gain ground on Ohio State for fan attention in Ohio, it won't happen by just winning game alone. We could be a good MAC team for the next decade and many people will still be saying, "Oh, Akron had a game this weekend"?It's all about getting ourselves in a situation where we look competitive on a NATIONAL level. This is why performances like we had last weekend are so important. Until we reach the status of teams like last year's Boise State team, or the Marshall teams of a few years ago, the gains will only be minimal.I remember standing in line at one of the Portable Toilets in a parking lot at Ohio State, and I was talking to a guy who appears to be a pretty knowledgable college football fan. But then he asked me, "So, you're knickname is, The Zips? Is that right"?, and I said "Yes". And he said, "So what conference do you guys play in?".This is the thought process of the majority of Ohio college football fans. My best friend is a college football junkie, and an Akron graduate, but only about ONCE a year will he ask me, "So, how is Akron doing this year". He obviously isn't paying any attention himself. You'd probably even be surprised at the number of college football fans in Akron alone that do not even know that Akron won the MAC title in 2005. Many might not even be aware that Akron and Ohio State are even in the same division. But this I can tell you for sure....If November rolls around, and we're sitting in the top 20 in the AP poll, EVERY college football fan would notice.

Speaking of Can't State shirts....I had heard someone on here mention that the Arlington Road Kohl's store had Akron gear. So, I went down there one afternoon about a week ago to see what they had, and right there inside the entrance was a couple of racks of college tee shirts and sweat shirts.Of course, there's some Notre Dame, USC, Penn State, Ohio State, etc. And then I see some open space, and only a few Akron shirts, but nothing in my size. And then, I see TONS of Can't State tee shirts. So, at first I'm pissed because there's nothing left in Akron. But, I soon became overjoyed at the reality of the whole situation.THE Can't STATE GEAR WASN'T SELLING Thought you guys might enjoy that.

Rowdy...I'm glad to hear that after my experience there last year during the Penn State/Akron game when the OSU/Northern Illinois game was being played. I had said I would never go there again for an Akron game, but it looks like they are supporting the good guys now
-
Big Zip...I did find Bobbyake's post, and your are correct about what he said about the Winking Lizard. I obviouisly never saw that particular thread, and was recalling another thread where I heard some other bars mentioned as being all dresssed in OSU gear. Wow. I'm surprised since I've been there many times for Akron games, and many other Saturdays during football season, and never recall them being donned in OSU gear. So now, who is actually a Zip-supporting establishment?? I plan on being at the Lizard with the crew I usually go there with, as I always am for games I do not attend, but I'm hoping maybe a better option surfaces for the future. The Rocknes on Merriman might be what we're looking for.

Ok, come on guys.I hate Can't as much any anyone. But they return all 5 starters from a team that finished only a game behind us in the standings last year. It should not come as a surprise if "the experts" think they will be the team to beat in the MAC East to start the season.
