This argument has gotten old and tired.Bottom line, no team in the NFL pays $1 million dollars to someone who is just filling a roster spot. If that is your intention, you can get all kinds of players for NFL minimum, even last year's Heisman trophy winner. There was either competition for his services, or Holmgren sees great potential in him, or both.
-
Buckzip...nothing personal, but I think you aren't understanding this.By trading for Frye, Seattle is obligated to pay him his current salary, WHICH IS THE SALARY HE NEGOTIATED AS AN EARLY 3RD ROUND DRAFT PICK. Would they have agreed to pick up the salary of someone making 3rd round draft pick money if they thought he wasn't that good? Of course not. That would be stupid.
-
ZipGrad93 is correct. In order to get Frye, Seattle had to give up a 6th round pick, AND pay him his already-existing salary of $1 million per year.If there was not strong interest in him, Seattle could have easily waited for the Browns to cut him (knowing that Dorsey had already returned to Cleveland), and could have possibly signed him for much less than his current salary, AND would not have had to give up a draft pick. There obviously was competition, or Seattle could have gotten Frye for far less.

Well, here's an interesting scenario in the works.....Cincinnati had the 30th ranked defense in the NFL last year. Whoever gets the start at QB will likely have a much easier time of it this week.Which means, of course, that the remaining Browns fans will (at least for one week) be thinking, "See? We always knew the QB was the problem".
-
Wow. In just less than a day, as we were pursuing the Frye story, Zippy has slipped from the top overall vote getter, to 10th overall, and now trails in the matchup against CavMan of Virginia. Just yesterday, this was a comfortable lead. My guess is, all of these schools who have a big following are starting to catch on to this competition, and are getting more involved as the week progresses.

Chuck Galeti on 19 Action News just brought up another point that I had not thought of yet....If Charlie is gone, then basically, all of the time the Browns spent with Frye running the offense in summer practices, training camp, all of the exhibition games, and the first quarter of Sunday's game, are all pretty much WASTED TIME.WOW...great point.

I'll likely never be an NFL scout in my lifetime, but this just about sums up my thoughs exactly.

I think he will be fine also. Sure, he's gotten his butt kicked around for a couple of years, but he loves playing football, will not sulk, and as long as his body holds up, will FINALLY get his chance to learn and develop as a QB under a good system. To Any Remaining Browns Fans:Everyone was screaming "Charlie Frye...Charlie Frye" just two seasons ago, as we were watching Trent Dilfer struggle with the inept situation he was put into. And before that, we did the same thing to Jeff Garcia. And now, barely more than a year later, Browns fans are done with Frye, and want Brady Quinn. This leads me back to what I said on draft day....The Browns have MUCH BIGGER PROBLEMS than the QB position. And Sunday's game exposed them.....big time.

If my memory is correct, by accepting him in a trade, Seattle will pick up the remaining years of his contract at $1 million per year. If the Browns has released him, I think the Browns would have gotten nothing, and Seattle could have negotiated another deal.Is this correct? If so, then Seattle obviously felt that he was worth a draft pick and $1 million a year. Actually, that's quite a bargain for a # 2 quarterback. You guys watch. Just like Jeff Garcia (who has a similar playing style to Charlie), I predict that Mr. Frye will look like an entirely different guy when he gets a chance to play under a stable system. Something he's never been able to do in the pros OR in college. Crennel needs to GO !! There's no way a good coach analyzes his QBs for an entire training camp, and then pulls the starter he chose in the first quarter of the first game. And besides that, he never gave ANY of his QBs enough snaps in preseason games to even remotely prepare them to start a season. This is a HUGE error, in my opinion, and the Browns will go nowhere the rest of this season because of it.Nice plan Romeo. Like the one announcer said during the game on Sunday "I don't think any quarterback wants any part of this".

WOW...it's been a crazy couple of days!!

Well Big Zip, that would be funny. But, I guess it's pretty safe to say that not too many players have flourished in their time in Cleveland, because we are pretty much in the same boat that we were in 8 years ago. How many more times can we stand to hear "we are rebuilding"? I wish I could find a confirmation of the Frye trade somewhere.
-
Well, in a way I wish him luck since I've met him, and he's a good kid. But in a way, if his career really sky-rockets, I am going to feel like we let a great QB get away. Especially since none of us appear to be sold on either of the people that beat him out at this point.
-
It is funny that there was a couple of people that didn't think anyone would want Charlie. In fact, when Quinn was drafted, several teams inquired about him, and the Browns didn't want to let him go at the time.Looking at the Giants' roster of QBs, I can definitely see why they would want him.I'm not really surprised he got traded for a 4th round pick. He's damaged goods now. He's been in Cleveland for 3 years. :rolleyes:This is a sad day, in a way. I wanted to see him play in Cleveland, but the situation was hopeless. The fact that the team wasn't getting any better was one factor, but then the drafting of Quinn pretty much sealed his fate. Cleveland has made quite a few good QBs look bad since 1999. So, he's better off somewhere else.

johnnyzip....maybe we shouldn't discard Ohio just yet, but they would probably need to beat us at home to get that done. And gosh, let's home that with only 4 games at home this year, we can win them all.
-
Remember, the fact that Zippy is the highest total vote getter right now means nothing, except for the fact that it looks like our fans are outnumbering other team's fans so far. These are head-to-head competitions, so the slate will get wiped clean for the 2nd round matchups. So, we have to keep voting every round !!

I thought it might be a good time to see what the other teams in our division have done thus far. Here's my analysis of our competition. I welcome everyone's thoughts and opinions. Can't STATEBeat an Iowa State team that doesn't look very good, and got blown out by Kentucky.Prediction: I still expect them to win 3-4 games in the MAC East.MIAMIBeat what should be a pretty decent Ball State team, and lost in OT to Minnesota.Prediction: I hope Minnesota was not very good, or this Miami team is dramatically improved from last year, and will contend to the MAC East title. We also play them on the road.BUFFALOLost to #16 Rutgers, and throttled Temple.Prediction: They won't be everyone's easy victory this year.BOWLING GREENWon on the road against Minnesota, and played a great game at Michigan State.Prediction: To say that they are improved is an understatement. This team scares me, and we play them on the road.OHIOBeat Gardner-Webb (who?), and won at Louisiana Lafayette (Sun Belt).Prediction: Louisiana Lafatette racked up 534 yards of offense against an Ohio team that won last year by playing defense. If their defense has weakened, this team has little chance to repeat.TEMPLEPrediction: Temple is Temple.I know it's early, but if I had to predict final standings right now, here is what I see.1) Bowling Green2) Miami3) Akron4) Ohio5) Can't6) Buffalo7) TempleSeeing how good both Bowling Green and Miami are looking so far will make it one tall task to beat them on the road. However, having Ohio and Can't at home should give us the wins we need to finish ahead of them in the standings. If this scenario plays out, we win 4 games in the MAC East. This means that with our win over Army, our best chances for that 6th win to become bowl eligible would be the game against Connecticut, or that late season home game against Central Michigan. If not, we'll have to hope for some big upsets on the road this year to get to a bowl game.

The Tuesday morning news is also confirming that Ken Dorsey is back in Berea.I was hoping yesterday that Charlie got his gift, and got to get out of here. Now I don't know what is happening. Stay Tuned.
-
JD's press conference transcript is posted on gozips.com. He does make reference to the fact that he thought the offensive play calling might have been too conservative.
-
jeaglet1...I don't think anyone thought Charlie played well. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen him that out of synch. But you say that he played a "poor game", and he only played one quarter. I'd be truly amazed if the Browns changed their mind about their starter after one quarter of football. That would be the ultimate desperation move. That's beyond bizarre. If Zip81 is right, and Dorsey comes back as the starter, and Quinn as the backup, this would be the most bizarre move of all time. Because, you would have to ask yourself, if they thought that highly of Dorsey, why did they cut him?The saga continues...I guess.

I hope someone can answer this question.I saw Davanzo Tate run off the field Saturday, dangling his right arm, which sometimes indicates a separated shoulder.Does anyone know anything about his status for next Saturday??
-
82....quite to the contrary. I actually think that we did as much beating as they did. Which was impressive.I'm simply referring to the heat, the nature of the game, a defensive battle, a lot of hard tackles, etc., and saying that I expect us to be physically drained. I never said anything about US getting beat up physically. It's difficult after a game like this to get your entire team physically able to practice again, let alone play a game in 6 days. Our guys will really have to suck it up.I'm an old guy too, and am a fan going all the way back to the Dennison era, so I am well aware of the way we got beat up physically during some of those early years of our 1-A existence.

I'm watching the news right now, and they are saying nothing about this. In fact, Romeo is saying "we are not making any personnel decisions today".Hmm. I was about to start celebrating for Charlie.
-
I have to respond to this two ways. As a Browns fan, and as a Zips fan.As a Zips fan, this is GREAT news. When Charlie was first drafted by the Browns, I said "great, we'll get to see him play right here". But looking back, this was a bad situation for a quarterback to step into (just ask Garcia and Dilfer). He needs to get into a better situation. As a Browns fan, I'm pissed. This tells us that we are going to rebuild....AGAIN. Lets face it, they have no intention of making Anderson a starter. They are simply going to buy some time for Brady, which means that the season is virtually over. The Beacon Journal just reminded me this morning that Anderson threw at least a half dozen passes that should have been picked off. And he can't move, which means he's going to get teed-off on back there.Happy day if you are a Charlie fan. Frustrating day if you are a Browns fan.

Captain... I had a couple of Buckeye fans sitting in front of me. They were the only one's in the general vicinity. We were yelling stuff in their ears the entire game, especially the first half. They had to hear "The Appalachian State Game isn't so funny now...is it?" and the "ZI..........PS" all game long.I would see the guy whisper something to his girlfriend every once in a while, but other than that, he really couldn't do much but sit there and take it.I know quite a few Ohio State fans, and the experienced ones who go down to games KNOW where the visiting seats are, and are smart enough not to buy tickets from scalpers in those areas.Unfortunately, the poor souls who don't know better end up in those seats and have to watch their beloved Buckeyes with the visiting fans screaming in their ear.It was fun.

The Winking Lizard in Fairlawn has been my choice lately. And you're right, they are a Zip-friendly establishment. Are they still doing our Zips Live broadcasts this season??Now that we get so many road games on TV, that's a GREAT IDEA to try to find a place that's Zip-friendly, and get as many people there as possible.
