  1. I think Buckzip has it right. The HOF Game is not a money maker. It's a part of a weekend of ceremonies. I don't see anyone associated with the HOF really having an interest in bringing everyone up to Akron for the game so that they can draw a few more bucks from gate revenues.
  2. I'll weigh in.....Obviously, people will think that we might fall off a bit after losing our floor general, and a MAC POY on the interior. And there's a valid reason to think that way.On the other hand, those outside of our area might not have a grasp of the experience that guys like Nick Dials, Jeremiah Wood, Cedrick, and Linhart can bring. Thirdly, nobody knows what our new recruits will be able to dish out in their first year. I will tell you this much. We totally overwhelmed OU in February. And, you'd be hard pressed to convince me that they've stepped ahead of us.One more point. These national prognosticators make their judgements based on what they see on rosters. They've probably never seen a MAC game in their entire career.
  3. g-mann...we'll have our chance to put Can't right back in their place on September 22nd.I like how people assume that everyone in Ohio is an Ohio State fan. I have a bunch of friends that I hang out with on Saturday to watch college football. Only ONE is an Ohio State fan. Two are Michigan fans. Three of them are Akron fans. And one is Penn State. In fact, of my family and close friends that live in NE Ohio, more of them are Michigan fans than Ohio State fans. That "all eyes are on Columbus" statement is just not true. I'm sure if we counted, we'd find more fans for Ohio State than the other D-1A schools in Ohio. But that's far from ALL.
  4. I'm looking at the people in the picture. My classmates. Thanks for making me feel old
  5. Let's hope. I certainly share in your frustration through some administrations that were not as committed to athletics as the present leadership.
  6. Let me clear this all up...I can see that some of you really want this to happen, and wish to debate the likelihood of it occuring in the near future. I don't think anyone here is arguing that we don't have a need for a better facility, and an improved game-day experience. Captain, you say that it's time to start talking about the future, and a downtown arena. I STRONGLY AGREE. But, it's been talked about for over 20 years. And every time the talk starts to get loud, it seems that we have a few mediocre years of attendance, and the talking ceases. The 4,000 per game attendance that Captain speaks of (I don't know the real numbers) needs to continue to grow. If that happens, the "talking" will start turning into "doing". If it does not, and the attendance starts to drop this year in the post Romeo/Dru era, the talking will cease once again. It's up to us. The only thing that will put any kind of urgency in this process is an increasing demand for tickets.
  7. Unfortunate. I thought he might win the starting job at one time. And he was working hard, and was an enthusiastic kid. However, I saw this coming in the last week or so. I'm going to guess that he may have had a strong feeling that he was going to end up in the #3 spot.
  8. Zipsrifle and g-mann....good points.1) Why would the U. or the city actually start BUILDING a new arena when we have a facility that is only 20-some years old, and easily holds the demand for tickets.2) If it is going to be downtown, where is there that much available land? 3) Important people get lots of attention when they talk about "the future".Of course, I certainly hope that we don't end up in a Rubber Bowl situation and are trying to hold the JAR together with glue 40 years from now. But, the truth is, the only thing that will truly accelerate the need for a new arena will be an excessive demand for tickets at the existing arena. And that's not happening.
  9. Ok. Do you see "rookie" in anything I said? He compares favorably, and in many cases better, than the other starters in the NFL in their first 16 starts. You choose to ignore that, ignore the NFL's strong historical data on QBs in their first few years, and draw your own conclusions. You certainly have a right to do so.
  10. SGM....once again, you forget to mention that Frye's numbers compare FAVORABLY, and even SURPASS the stats for the first 16 starts of the current starting QBs in the NFL, including Peyton Manning.Simple logic would say that, if your rationale is correct, that Indy should have given up on Peyton Manning??Why do you try to find ways to bash Charlie Frye? It just makes no sense, considering all of the circumstances that he has played under. Giving you every benefit of the doubt, the WORST conclusion anyone can come to at this point is that we "don't know" if Frye will ever be a star QB. Because, the stats show he's right on pace with the best in the league at this point in his career. And, although I pull for Charlie as a former Zip, I'm perfectly fine with saying that we "don't know" how good he will be. Because, there's no crystal ball to answer that question for us.
  11. Guys....here's the incentive....I GUARANTEE you that this will NOT become a reality anytime soon unless the JAR starts getting filled. This is our only chance to rush this process along. If not, this won't come to fruition until the JAR gets too old. Let me also bring this up again....Back in the mid-80's, we appeared to be at another point where the JAR was looking to be too small for this University's basketball program. Talk about a downtown arena, even one that could host football games, was a hot topic of discussion. However, the crowds got a little smaller over a period of time, and the talking ceased. The burden is on us....the fans.....to show that we need a new arena.By the way, the Don Dome is my 2nd choice. I'll stick with the Con-Dome as my first.
  12. I'm sorry. You have to be cautious when assuming that a MAC team like Akron has enough depth at a position like WR that they can just "plug in" a few new guys and not miss a beat.
  13. Time to turn some QBs into WRs. Especially if it looks like they can stay academically eligible.
  14. Buckzip. Mentioning that Anderson is a 6th round draft pick was not to say that he can't be a starter because of that. It was merely one of the credentials he has which leads one to conclude that the Browns braintrust will not bank their future on him. Your point about the coaching staff creating competition is correct. I mentioned that in the earlier thread as well. You must also be familiar with these types of situations.Remember...Tom Brady is an extreme rarity.
  15. That's about what I expected. I just hope he's not playing on a crummy team. There's plenty of opportunities for MAC level guys to play on pro leagues in Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico, etc. I hope he made the right choice.
  16. UA Fan...I'm with you. These guys kicked our tails two years ago. I'm surprised we're favored by a touchdown. Lets just hope this is a completely different Army team. Although, that Army team was pretty bad too.
  17. A salute goes out to the hard working farm people of America. I was one of them, before I became a city dweller.
  18. Just wait. Keep watching this thread. They are out there somewhere. They will appear soon enough
  19. I've made that drive from Columbus to Indy several times. I know what you mean.
  20. Ok...I've said this before....The Browns want to put pressure on Frye to compete and get better. That's all this is about. Think about it. Crennel and Savage are on their last chance in Cleveland. Do you think they have any thoughts at all of resting their fortunes on a virtually inexperienced 6th round draft pick, who can't move, behind a still-struggling offensive line? Here's Anderson's NFL experience:1) Played good in the 2nd half against the Chiefs. The same game in which Charlie had a great first half. Although, before the winning drive, Anderson made a horrible read and threw an interception that nearly cost us the game.2) Took the offense in for a touchdown at "garbage time" in Pittsburgh. It was our only score of the game.3) Got pretty darn close to throwing as many interceptions as completions against Tampa Bay. Before training camp began, Crennel said that Frye had a "leg up", and now that camp observers are talking about Frye performing better than Anderson, Crennel has no response? Getting the picture yet? I've seen national publications already that tell the real story, which is that Anderson is a long shot to get the starting job. Charlie would have to fall apart, and Anderson would have to improve dramatically. Neither is happening. I know there's a few Frye Bashers on here who'd like to think differently. But, Derek Anderson would struggle just to be the clipboard holder on most NFL teams. And Savage and Crennel know it, regardless of what they might say.
  21. This is good stuff.....Crossing Buchtel and Carroll was especially challenging when you were walking back to the dorms from the Exchange Street bars late at night. Especially after 25 cent draft beer night at the Townhouse. We would always hear stories about people getting hit.Between classes, I always remember the intersection of Carroll and Brown and the intersection of Buchtel and Brown being swamped with people. If you were driving a car, you'd really have difficulty getting through those intersections of that time. Because, of course, nobody paid much attention to the "don't walk" sign. Who can forget scheduling at Spicer Hall? You'd read that wall and see that there were openings for a class, and then go rush over to the appropriate line to try to get it. That was quite a high-tech. scheduling system, let me tell ya.Recreation facilities? Did we have any back then? The outdoor basketball courts behind the dining hall were about the only recreation facilities we had access to all the time.
  22. I've got news for the Hoosier faithful. Indiana will likely be favored by a few points to beat us, but much of that advantage will simply be because they are the home team. And regardless of the location of the game, I don't see any way they'll be favored against Western Michigan. So, these are far from being game that they "should win".
  23. Whether it's right or wrong (I'm still not old enough to decide yet), power and notoriety in a community belongs to those with the most money. Every building on our beloved campus has a name attached to it. And we can think of every reason why someone should be the namesake of a particular building or facility. But none of those reasons will ever likely replace a cash contribution.
  24. I agree that it does seem as if this offense would be well suited for an option attack. Not only do we have a QB with running ability, and a deep stable of RBs, but it's also a good choice when you don't believe you have a very good offensive line. On the other hand, I wouldn't look for Brookhart to make a wholesale change in his offensive philosophy just because it fits his talent for this particular season.
  25. Wow. I used to think that a 3 to 4 foot vertical leap was good. But 11 feet? Wow  (Obviously a typo).Since Brookhart is indicating that he will quickly whittle his QB choice down to two people, is anyone getting the strange feeling that Hakes will be the odd man out? If so, do you think he'll be moved to another position? Or, will he stand on the bench for two years waiting for his next chance to start? Not sure we can answer this question right now, but I had been hoping that he would emerge as the starter right now. Doesn't look like that's going to happen. Ever since I saw him practice before last season, I thought Alex Allen looked to be the best running back we had. If he is 100%, and stays that way, look for him to quickly get the bulk of the playing time in the backfield as the season progresses. Even though it's only the first practice, I still remain very, very, very concerned about our ability to generate offensive production this year. Hearing that the defensive front is getting good pressure (and we aren't known as a good pass rushing team), and that the WRs are unable to bail the QB out, is a bad sign. Sounds like our dilemma in the last couple of games of 2006 is continuing right into 2007.
