Zips lead 57-47 at the final media. Ali with a pair of FTs coming up. I don't think we've seen any Clarke and not much X running the point. I feel like Groce is forcing Tribble to play it out. He's just not finishing at the basket, it's like he's afraid to use the back board.

I think Tribble is doing well playing the point.  The offense seems to be running smoothly.  I like that they are getting the ball into Freeman.

It turns out the Zips jump shot was not left back in Akron, but rather misdirected through Dallas. Better late than never. Go Zips!!

Their defense has been solid again.

    We're holding App State to 29.2% shooting - and we're losing.  We're shooting 23.1%.

I’ve never seen so many open misses by D1 players. This one could get ugly.

When KD was coach, we had great shooters but we were not athletic and everybody on this board indicated that Akron should recruit athletes, we can always teach ball players to shoot.  Maybe we were wrong.  (LOL)

Man oh man, I don’t think the threads during the late season collapse last year were even this bad. I think we all know that this group has a very, very high ceiling. It’s game 5 of a 30+ game season. I am also bummed and disappointed in the performance, and no it didn’t happen because of the last two opponents. It happened because Akron shot the ball like s***. I’d prefer what happened rather than something like a 80-55 where you don’t make any stops. This is still a top 4 talent team in the MAC.

The Zips didn’t have it tonight. Maybe they won’t have it tomorrow or in a couple weeks. But sometimes it takes time to build chemistry and that teamism that has thrived in this program. 2019-2020 teams don’t just walk through the door every year unfortunately. It will take time to build up to that level, they haven’t even figured out the go-to guy yet. That core practiced together for 2+ seasons.  The pieces are there, they just need to fall into place.

Tonight absolutely sucked and was disgraceful by this program’s standards, but fortunately we have one of the best coaches in all of mid-major basketball that can make some great things happen. The ceiling is so high for this group, I’m pumped to see what they can do.

I think there may be less complaining if the game had been on ESPN plus for free.  However, many of us spent $30 to watch this tournament and expected a Zips team that was ready to compete.  Also, I stated during the Wheeling and Point Park thread that those games were a waste of time and did nothing to prepare the team for the season.   This game seems to prove my point.

  4. This is what happens when you have no senior leadership.  When we would get in these shooting funks last year LCJ would drive to the hoop and dish for a basket or hit a jumper.  Ali, Trimble, Tribble, just could not spark anything.  Freeman was the only one who could score and they had some nice blocks on him in the second half.  Lets hope this game is a abberation.  After football and soccer, we are all looking for redemption in our b ball program.

Pretty certain this is the worst game I've watched since the VCU tourney game.

Disagree, this is worse.  VCU was a good team that played pressure defense against an undermanned Akron squad.  What is our excuse in this game, the arena is too big?

  6. Can we sum up the week for Akron sports:  Freeze my butt off to watch Akron soccer lose to a crappy Santa Clara team.  Akron football gets killed by Kent State and cannot score on a Kent State defense that sucks, (had the good sense to stay away from that one) and  I pay $30 to watch Akron Basketball lose by 25 points to the worse team in the A 10 by 30 points and goes 0 for 20 from the 3 line.  Go Zips!!!!!!!

  7. Ali cannot hit the broad side of a barn from distance and takes a 3 point shot about 8 feet behind the 3 line.  If I were Groce, I would pull him.  Clark then takes an off balence 3.  The only thing that has worked is feeding the ball inside to Freeman.  Where is the teamism?

For those of you watching, is it as ugly to see as it is to hear?  LOL.

Far worse!!   We cannot hit a 3 and the shots are not even close.  The only thing that is working is feeding the ball to Freeman inside.  I still think that playing Wheeling and the other crap team did nothing to help prepare the Zips for this game.  Probably the worst shooting half in recent history.  I can only recall Trimble and Castanada hitting jump shots.  We must be 0 for 10 on 3 pointers.  Everything as been short or well off the mark.

Ali has the greatest stone face. Never changes. Even after he knocked down the go ahead points not even the smallest smile.

Ali needs confidence.  I cannot tell you how many times I have watched him make a move and then stop in the lane and look to pass.   At the Ohio State game on his 4 point play he knew exactly what he wanted to do and did it.  He needs to show the same confidence when driving to the hoop.  A coach once told me that if you take the ball to the hoop strong you either get blocked, get a layup or get fouled.  Any time you have a basketball play where 2 out of 3 results are good then that is a good play.

  10. When you look at that picture you see a sea of empty seats.  I know this was a terrible opponent but I am guessing that season tickets are way down this year because of covid and that people lost interest because we did not have any fans last year.  I will be curious if we will see more butts in the stands if this team starts winning more games.  I think it sucks for the players to play in an half empty Jar.

  11. I liked the student section being in the lower level.  They were loud during the game.  They also had students behind the basket.  I think the tables behind the basket without any seating does not make much sense.  Who wants to stand to watch the game?

Walton and Castanada are going to be good this year.  Bandango is a work in progress.  He just seems a little awkward around the basket.  He also had problems picking up a a pass on a give and go.  However, he is a shot blocker on Defense.  They took a lot of 3 balls this game and shot a decent percentage.  A lot of sloppy play from both teams but that is to be expected.  Difficult to assess the team when the competition is not high quality.

Seems like a common scheduling approach for teams of UA's ilk.  Play a good team or two then a bunch of little sisters to come up to speed.    PCCC gets Point Park in 2 weeks.

Point Park basketball is in the River States Conference which is NAIA.

Thanks, the excitement continues to build for the Zips first home basketball game in almost 2 years.

  13. As a season ticket holder I would like to say I am excited about this game but then I read the press guide about Point Park and still cannot figure out if they are division 1, 2, 3 or NAIA.  If we are going to play a game against a team from Pittsburgh, how about the Dukes instead of Point Park so we can settle whether Groce or KD has a better team.  Who schedules these teams and do they have any idea how to build excitement for Akron Basketball.  To follow up a game against Ohio State with a team that lost to Lawrence Tech just does not make much sense to me.  I will be curious to see if there are 1000 people at the Jar.

Fair enough, but I think there are also deeper problems. It makes no sense to me that in the third season with Feeney at the helm, the defense can be in a position where a Buffalo TE can catch a drag route at the 40 yard line and run in a wide open field with not a single Akron defender appearing in the camera frame until he gets to the 10 yard line. I would say the defensive backfield has improved, but far too often things like that happen on coverages. That goes beyond personnel.

As a poster said in another thread on the WMU game winning TD, sure he was covered, but the safety, I can't remember who, used the totally incorrect technique by attempting to undercut the route and the throw went over the top and was caught. It's easy for me to say, but the obvious thing to do it stay high and keep the receiver from catching it instead of trying to pick it off or whatever it is he was doing. To me, the ineptitude of the defensive backfield is far more scheming than it is talent. Up front, it's talent and size all day long. A Rodney Coe-like transfer would have been awesome this season.

There was a play before the touchdown where our safety did the same thing.  He let the receiver run past him but the pass was overthrown and incomplete.  The safeties are looking at the quarterback and are not watching the receivers as they run down the field past them.
