You have to give the Zips credit coming back and coming back. Gibson is playing a great game. That is 2 great games in a row. The offense has life. Can the defense hold again?

I really thought we would finally beat a ranked team. Why did Freeman leave his man? Great game by the Zips and clutch shot by Ali. He seems to be the clutch player. Groce went to him at the end of the game.
-
Bad decision by Freeman. After the rebound should have sent the ball out for another possession.
-
If Trimble can get hot at the end of the game if could be great. Ohio State is shooting 22% in the second half. Really good Zips D. Can we close this out?
-
We are tied with Ohio State in basketball and beating Western Michigan in football. I guess this is Zips heaven!!!

I like the Zips press and their pressure defense. If we had made some open 3 balls we would be tied on winning. Good to see Ali make a postive move and score. Clark looks good getting to the basket. Trimble is a streak shooter. If he could get hot it would certainly help the zips. Not a bad first half.

I grew up in the Phila area and attended school at Akron and settled out here and I was also surprised at how many people from Akron are Ohio State fans. In Phila nobody rooted for Penn State unless they were alumni. We were all Eagle fans and rooted for whatever college we attended. When I attended Akron I always went to the football games and was amazed at the traffic jams to get into the stadium. It usually took a half hour to park and 15 minute walk to get into the stadium. The Acme Zip game was always a near sellout. The thought was a new downtown stadium would attact more fans. Unfortunately, you need to have a consistent winning football team to get butts in the seats and a University that know how to market the team. Akron has neither. I give credit to the hardy souls on this board that continute to attend the games in person. However, most Akron fans have lost interest in this team.
Akron cannot keep putting out a team that is non competitive and expect people to show up at the stadium.
Further, who wants to watch football on Tuesday nights?
Also, now that all the Zips games are on TV it is easier to watch the game on TV and then turn it off when the Zips are out of it by the third quarter.
I believe that once Akron is competitive that attendance will improve but I just don't see it ever being consistently great.

I love Cam Reece's reaction as he heads back down the floor. As I recall that was one of two big slams by Tribble in that one.
I still remember that dunk. Has to be one of the best dunks by a Zip.

Ohio State is ranked 17th in the nation. I have been following Akron basketball for a long time and correct me if I am wrong but I do not believe we have ever beaten a ranked team. I know they came close to beating VCU and Nevada at home but I do not know if those teams were ranked when we played them. You would think all the stars would align and Akron would have beat a ranked team at some point in time. Maybe Tuesday?

I still do not understand Akron defense. You know they are going to run the ball. Why not put the 9 guys in the box. Makes no sense to have 2 safeties 15 yeards down the field when a first down ends the game. They get 2 first downs and end the game.

Calling that a hit is a gross exageration. I agree with the annoucer if the kicker is that stupid it should be 30 yards.

Zips score a touchdown and 2 point conversion. They are only down by 3. This is the best they have looked on offense all year. Can they finish?

Great hold by the Zips and they get a break on the review. Can they score to make this a ball game. Gibson looked really good on our last possession. The Zips may have the momentum. By the way, like the announcers from CBS.
-
That was an impressive drive by the Zips. Gibson made some great throws and the receivers made some nice catches. Can the defense hold?
-
I think we have seen this before. Zips cannot move ball in third quarter and opposing team scores touchdown and Zips down by 3 or more scores. I really think they are playing better tonight but they cannot come up with the big defensive play on third down.
Third and one, then penalty and third and six, and then penalty and third and sixteen. The Zips punt and the route is on.
-
I watching this on TV and even the commentators who are neutral could not understand the spot. He caught the ball at the 34 and got pushed backwards. They spotted the ball at the 34 and a half. There is no reason that the spot was not reversed on review. The Zips are just not good enough to overcome bad breaks.

Bandango is going to be an interesting player. He knows how to draw an offensive foul and he is physical and got a little bit chippy with a WV player at the end of the game holding his shirt. That was the 2nd time he was chippy during the game. There is no question this team will be a good rebounding team. We turned the ball over 15 times in the first half. Our offense looked much better the last 15 minutes. The WV player that killed us was the guy that scored 29 and he made some tough 3 point baskets. Ali looked terrible. He had no points and several turnovers. Freeman made a 3 from the corner. If he develops into a shooter watch out. We are athletic and can rebound and can play defense. We need to learn to play under control under presssure and need more offensive flow.
-
I only saw Trimble briefly and he made a 3. Surprised he did not get more time. Ali looks out of sync. A lot of tribbling without going anywhere. The offense does not look very fluid.
-
I will be seeing if Freeman has developed an offensive game to match his quickness on defense. It seems like forever since we lost in the playoffs in Cleveland. This team will be a lot differenct without LCJ. I also wonder how this team will shoot the 3 ball. It seems that has been our weakness the last few seasons in that the players like to shoot the 3 but we do not shoot a high percentage when shooting the 3 ball club. I also am hopoing that Trimble will develop into an all around player and just not a streak 3 point specialist.

At the start of the game, Gibson had time but threw some bad passes, held onto the ball too long and threw into double coverage. We then went to Irons after 2 series and he promptly fumbled the ball on his first series. Our defense held the first couple of series and stopped Buffalo. They also held Buffalo to a field goal after the first Irons fumble. After that the defense could not stop Buffalo and the offense could not move the ball and it got ugly. We actually moved the ball at the end of the half and then we commit a personal foul. How many times has that happened when this team finally makes a play only to be brought back by a stupid penalty. I was really surprised to see Gibson struggle since he had been throwing the ball really well.
I wanted to go to the game but thought that we could not competetive. It is easier to turn off the tv when it becomes unwatchable which seems to be almost every game. This team is not built to compete at the D1 level unless everything goes right. Short and quick passes to cover up the fact that our offensive line cannot hold their blocks very long. I think that was the orginal game plan but Gibson was off. Irons simply could not run the ball and that is his game. I enjoyed the 75 yard run from scrimmage but that was about it.
I remember when Arth got hired they interviewed a football guy from the area who thought that it was a great hire and Akron was going to win the MAC. He indicated that Arth was successful his entire career. Wrong!!!!

Last week I turned off the game after the first half and was surprised to see a Zips win. This week I was going to be optimistic and watch the game. I had to work and tuned in the game with 6 minutes left in the half and watched Miami score an easy touchdown to make it 21-7. I then watched Gibson throw some nice passes and we were driving when we ran the ball one time and the back fumbled. I watched the second half and there was a key third and five. Miami threw an easy 10 yard pass in front of our safety. Why can't we play man on short yardage and at least make the quarterback work for the first down. The next play they score on a handoff. We get the ball back and Gibson throws a nice pass for a first down and there is a holding penalty that negates the play. On that same series the same lineman that holds has an illegal procedure penalty. The next play a personal foul. It is 4th and a mile and we punt. I turned off the game. I watched a quarter and saw 4 mistakes. This team does not have the talent level to make 4 mistakes in 12 minutes.

I usually don't post anything in football because I do not want to be negative and lets face it, the last 3 years have been difficult. Although the competition was not division one, I enjoyed todays game. This is the first game in a long time that I can remember a Zip receiver not dropping a ball. Further, the one handed grab in the end zone was fantastic and the long touchdown pass was a good throw and catch. Irons was simply too quick for Bryant and made some nice runs that simply will not happen in division one. The running game looked decent and our back and recievers usually did not go down on first contact. Can someone tell me why on fourth and one we cannot put a quarterback under center and used our superior size to get one yard.

I am glad we got K.J. A player that does not shoot the 3 ball. I like him already. However, it just not feel right to be poaching a player from another MAC team. How would we feel if our LCJ decided to transfer to Kent for his senior season last year? We are going to see a lot of transfers in the future so no complaints when it is our turn to lose a quality player.

Game 2- Ohio State
in Akron Zips Basketball
Posted
Losing a buzzer beater to Ohio State when 2 defenders leave a guy wide open under the basket. Watching our safeties in football let a receiver run past them to score a winning touchdown in the last minute. Obviously, this is not Zip heaven but must be the other place.
