OU fans are an embarrassment because a journalist writes a headline?
-
Sorry, but I just don't you're being honest. And OU's accomplishments got talked about a lot more than in March. Last week's Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports stories - one calling them a potential "Boise State of the Midwest" (sure, an exaggeration, but so what?) and the other saying they are a natural fit for the Big East given their success in basketball and football. (I don't think OU would have any interest in moving, BTW.) In sheer volume of coverage, March Madness success is much more significant than soccer. I don't think that's necessarily appropriate, but it's a fact. Your jealousy shows in the unwillingness to give even grudging respect to a program that has won games in the spotlight. You might say Penn State is "awful," but they are significantly stronger than they will be when the scholarship limits hit. They are bigger and stronger than most MAC teams. OU was walking into a buzz saw in that environment, but they came through. Penn State just held Navy to fewer yards than ND. I notice also that you omitted OU's bowl win - or was Utah State awful too? Even the Captain has written that OU's recent success in big games is something Akron and other MAC teams should aspire to. And I don't think other MAC fans would similarly disparage Akron's powerful soccer program. But for you I guess it's just personal. I am hoping for continued progress under Coach Bowden, but for now can appreciate what other schools have accomplished.

I suspect that a majority of Zips fans would happily trade the soccer NC for OU's Sweet 16 run and all of the coverage that came with it. In your heart of hearts, you know I'm right. Anyway, why the jealousy of OU? They have won some big games in B-ball and football in recent years and it has been good for the MAC.

InfoCision Stadium on the Today Show
jupitertoo replied to Zipgrad1990's topic in Akron Zips Football
I know several people who currently work at InfoCision or who have worked there in the past in mid-level management. It's, um, an EXTREMELY profitable business model. They don't cut anyone much of a break. But that's the nature of that type of business - they're no different than any other call-center sweatshop operator. -
This is a great topic. I would add Kirby Hocutt, formerly of Ohio U. and Miami (Fla.) and now of Texas Tech, to this list. He killed several sports in Athens and lied to everyone about the reasons. He left Miami in a mess of NCAA violations. And his b-ball hire at Texas Tech has blown up in the school's face in recent weeks. Kirby needs to run a shoe store somewhere, but people keep hiring him.

New 2013 commit: BJ Gladden

I assume TB had a press conference yesterday, yet I'm not seeing any coverage. PD has coverage of the MAC. Nothing from George Thomas - not even a blog entry - since Thursday night. I need to read about college football.

I agree with this post. OU had everything to lose going into that buzz saw yesterday and somehow came out with a win. I just came back from breakfast in Cuy. Falls and there were four people in the restaurant wearing OU stuff and I was approached by three people who remarked on the game. I was in Europe last month and was approached in an airport by a California resident who wanted to congratulate me on the Sweet 16 run. OU is cashing in on this big-time. Season tickets sales are through the roof for football (up 71% before yesterday) and they just put on an extra sales crew for today and Monday. B-ball renewals have already set a record. OU has an excellent AD who understands the importance of building on all of this momentum, which is why they are spending big money on B-ball (more than $4 million in upgrades to the arena, including a practice facility, and the big contract for Jim Christian) and football (just signed Solich and staff to 5 year deal this week, breaking ground (finally) for an indoor facility, planning stadium expansion).

I seriously wonder if anyone edits copy at the ABJ any more. Here's the headline on Ohio.com: Caleb Porter staying through season’s end, then will leave for Portland Timbers I worked in newspapers for several years and grew up in the business through family connections. I would have been laughed out of the newsroom with this headline, which delivers the NEWS as the secondary message. I can only assume the same writer's headline and lede on Nov. 22, 1963, would have been: "Kennedy motorcade redirected; president shot in head" No wonder this writer has been reassigned so many times.

ABJ gets scooped by PD...again. My father must be turning over in his grave.

Hilarious.

I was in Detroit on business last week and caught a radio interview with a member of the Michigan defense that lost that game. He said that virtually the entire starting defense decided to get as high as possible the night before the Appy game to prove that they could beat an FCS team even when high. Said several players were still doing bong hits at 6 a.m. of game day. Guess it didn't work out so well for them.

While the 1-11 record is a stretch (I see 3-4 wins), a bigger stretch is Ohio going 12-0. I don't see that at all. 3 losses in my book. And hate to say it, but I really think Can't might be the best or second-best team in the East this year.

Here's hoping they practice the opening coin flip a few times.

That's a stupid betting line. Take Akron and the points...and bet the house. I think it's more likely to be 14 to 17 points.

Zips football: Clearing up roster issues
jupitertoo replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Football
Proofreading is our friend. -
I just received a solicitation from Akron Athletics to purchase a block of seats for the UCF game. It's not sold out.

George Thomas' prose is almost unreadable. Read almost any paragraph for a lesson in circular logic.

Rubber Bowl is Sold to USFL - Akron Franchise
jupitertoo replied to K-Roo's topic in Akron Zips Football
This article doesn't make any sense, and this "news" hasn't appeared anywhere else. The USFL team has "purchased" the RB, but it has to pay rent? I don't think so. Keep in mind that this appeared on the West Side Leader's website, not the Beacon. Don't believe it even made into the WSL's paper edition, so take any claim with multiple grains of salt. And I strongly support the team name "Zeps." The Goodyear airdock was for zeppelins, not blimps. -
Season ticket sales this year vs last?
jupitertoo replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
I know it's preseason and everyone is looking for something to talk about, but, geez, do you constantly have to be taking the program's temperature like this? How many season ticket sales? These things will take care of themselves when the program starts to turn around. You're just going to drive yourselves crazy. -
Or the partner phrase, "I'll tell you what..." Or, egads, the ultimate..."I'll tell you what...there's no doubt about it."
-
Frankly, I am stunned George even posts here. Not really appropriate given that a journalist is supposed to be a step removed from fans to maintain his/her objectivity. And he clearly has thin skin.

Camp Zippy Practice 6: LBs take a hit

That's terrible news, for the team and the young man. -
I get the feeling his college education is not necessarily a top priority.
