GoZips Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 UNC-Greensboro posted their schedule. The Zips play at UNC-G on December 31. That means the team will then travel straight up to Providence for the URI game on January 3,2009.There is a slim possibility that the Zips could play in Columbus against the Buckeyes in midNovember. That "slim" is really, really "iffy". Ohio State's attempt to hold an exempt tournament oftheir own collapsed this past Thursday. Akron has been offered an opportunity to play the Buckeyes inColumbus and schedule a D-II team at home. If none of the three potential exempt tournamentsAkron is being courted by actually get a full field, then the OSU game becomes an option. All three arein danger of collapsing.Originally the Zips were scheduled to be a part of the Legends Classic. As near as I can tell this field iscomplete and the tournament should take place. Apparently there is some problem impeding thefinalization of the dates. The eight teams involved are PITT, Washington, Texas Tech, Mississippi State,Eastern Kentucky, Fairleigh Dickinson, Drexel and Akron. Two other exempt tournaments with openings are the famous San Juan Shootout and the Cancun Classic. Both tournaments have now extended an invitation to the Zips. However, both fields are still one and two teams short even if the Zips committed. I rate the likelihood of being in either of these tournaments as low.Understand that playing Ohio State is not some great wonderful thing. First, our young Zips are not likely to pull off an upset in mid November in Columbus. Two, there is no return game being offered. Three, we lose the Mississippi State game leaving Akron one game short and a D-II opponent replacing a D-I opponent. Not a sweet deal. Think this through before you start salivating over a trip to Columbus and a likely loss. Quote

Which of the teams that were announced as playing in the San Juan Shootout a couple of months ago has dropped out to make room for Akron, Oral Roberts, South Florida, Murray State, or Wright State? zipboy Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 I agree with GoZips, that does not excite me much either. Tournaments are much better where you get neutral games. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 I agree with GoZips, that does not excite me much either. Tournaments are much better where you get neutral games. The best part is that as you advance, you get better and better opponents. It's much more beneficial than playing just one game, and then a scrimmage against some D-II team. Quote
GoZips88 Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 a scrimmage against some D-II team. Scrimmage on your OWN time and dollar, NOT mine! If more practice/prep time is needed, close the doors, bring in the D-II team, do the controlled scrimmage thing again (like the Xavier game last year) and then move on with the rest of the schedule. I hope it doesn't come to this and we get the tourney games we're looking for. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 If one of the tourneys collapses, some of the teams from that one should be able to fill the spots for the other ones. Let's just hope that we aren't on the outside looking in when that happens. Quote

Let's just hope that we aren't on the outside looking in when that happens. Not as informative as GoZips post, but another really good idea. Do you suggest that the tourney that remains switch their scheduled dates to those scheduled for the collapsed tourney so that teams from the collapsed tourney are sure to be able to fill in, or should the remaining tourney keep its original dates and maybe one or more of the teams from the collapsed tourney can play a split squad in the surviving tourney and an already scheduled regular game that conflicts with the remaining tourney? LosAngelesZipFan Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 Any insight as to why these tourneys' "collapsed"? It is hard to imagine that the school with the biggest athletic budget in the country (everyone has priorities) can't pull off a tourney. Quote

CraftyMFer Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 So is it possible that Akron could play South Florida in the San Jaun Shootout? That would certainly be interesting being that Dan Hipsher is now at South Florida with Stan Heath. Quote

The NCAA changed the rules to allow teams to participate every year rather than once every four years. Most of these exempts are set. A few are finding that teams are opting to move to better opportunities. Thus creating a bit of chaos. The scramble is on for those teams left with an incomplete schedule (i.e. Akron). Quote

None of them have enough teams to be held right now. It's like a game of chicken to see who folds first. I think that once one of them goes under, most of the teams from that one will be scooped up by the other two. Quote

GoZips Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 Darn, Cap'n, that was a nice write up you wrote under the golf outing thread.I missed the outing due to having to work. I had promised Lamont Paris that I would attend. Guess Istill owe my thirty-five bucks. (Luncheon only).I sense from your post that KD is finally allowing some information about the scheduling to be posted. My post to begin this thread came at his bequest. You filled in some additional information rather nicely. Quote

Far more desirable than a game with Mississippi State.I can't wait until the schedule is released in full. Don't forget, Dayton and Winthrop will be coming to the JAR this winter. Quote
Quickzips Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Any chance that Pitt game could be part of a home/home or a 2 for 1? I'm guessing not seeing as it apparently came together late, but it would be pretty sweet to get Pitt in here for a game sometime down the road. Quote
