Zips Football on the Airwaves; Adds WRQK Rock 106.9 FMAKRON – The University of Akron will open its 2008 football season this weekend, facing the 12th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers Saturday at 11 am (CT)/Noon (ET) and the Akron/ISP Sports Network will have a new radio partner, while maintaining its relationship with Sports Radio 1350 AM, with the addition of WRQK Rock 106.9 FM.“We are thrilled to join as a broadcast partner at this exciting time in Akron football,” said Director of Programming for Clear Channel Radio Akron/Canton Keith Kennedy. “This final year in the Rubber Bowl obviously has generated more interest in the program, as has the buzz surrounding the opening of InfoCision Stadium in 2009. We are pleased to bring Zips fans a fresh, new FM home, while continuing a successful relationship with flagship station Sports Radio 1350 AM.”“WRQK is an icon in the Akron/Canton area and has tremendous loyalty and listeners,” said UA Senior Associate Athletics Director Hunter Yurachek. “We now feel we have a great radio presence being on a premier sports station, WARF (Sports Radio 1350), and one of the most powerful FM stations in the area, WRQK.”The festivities leading up to kickoff begin Thursday night (Aug. 28) at 7 pm with the first installment of “Zips Live” at the Winking Lizard in Fairlawn. Each week, Akron fans will have the opportunity to interact with Zips head football coach J.D. Brookhart as he and others will be on hand for the hour-long show. For those unable to attend, the broadcast can be heard on Sports Radio 1350 AM and on GoZips.com.On Saturdays, the Akron/ISP Sports Network pregame show will start one hour prior to kickoff (WRQK will join the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to kickoff). Steve French will once again bring you the play-by-play with Frank Stams adding his analysis and Joe Dunn reporting from the sideline. Stick around for post-game interviews with Dunn, Brookhart and selected players. In addition, the Akron-Wisconsin game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Great news, especially if you live south of Akron. I can get 1350 perfectly clear when I work up in Mentor, but I have trouble getting the signal at home. This also expands our potential listener base exponentially. Awesome job! Maybe UA is trying to create a fan base in Canton. They seem more enthusiastic about the Zips than people in Akron are, anyways.

Great news. While we are on the radio subject. I complained about this last year and nothing has changed this year.Could somebody in Akron marketing figure out how to get some of our games on Sirius/XM?Other MAC schools have figured it out.I know this is asking a lot since we can't even get a billboard on route 8, but K*ENT can.

I'm hoping they are considering having a WRQK pre-game tailgate party station somewhere outside InfoCision Stadium next season. Fill Exchange Street w/ WRQK rock before the marching band begins their new ICS pre-game traditions/show! WRQK could broadcast live from The Info an hour-or-two before the game, give away some prizes, make their presence seen and heard, add to the festive atmosphere, yada, yada, yada.

Anyone know if they will be doing basketball also? It's tough trying to listen to the post-game on 1350 during the way home and I know I can get 106.9.
Same here. Signal dies about the time coach is coming on with French. Would LOVE to see WRQK remain as part of the network into b-ball.
