ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Boy oh boy. If you had told me 15 years ago that there would be any good reason to be anywhere downtown on a fine sunny Saturday afternoon I might have called you a crack whore. Today I met friends at OBC downtown and there were at least 50-60 Zips fans cheering the team, excellent beer and bar food, and THANK GOD (where is BuckChuck?) very few Suckeye fans. The few Suckass fans who were there were less than cheerful, seeing the Zips triumph while their mighty Suckass team struggled badly against... Troy. It was marvelous.Anyway, not only was it great to see AKRON win and the greatly muted OSU presence, it was really cool to see actual patrons at the downtown establishments. This was after I ran on the Akron track earlier this morning and saw the new stadium superstructure right next door. DRINK BEER, DRINK BEER, DRINK BEER GOD D--- DRINK BEERSeeTeeZip

Zips fan
Glad to see a place becoming the hometown teams bar. I wish I still lived in Akron! I would have loved to have been there! Great win today by the Zips!
skip-zip
Let me be a little negative for a moment. Yes, it's nice to see the fans have somewhere to go that is dedicated to Akron. They even hire the DJ to cater to us, play our fight songs, and give out Akron prizes. But I had two obvious observations today.1) Good turnout? That place was absolutely packed, upstairs and downstairs, for the Syracuse game. Will fan interest for these road games drop off as the season progresses, much like attendance does for home games? Lets hope not, but lets be honest...there was a dramatically smaller crowd for this week's game.2) Why in the world are so many staff people at the OBC wearing Suckeye State gear? Does that make any sense? As far as I am concerned, someone needs to communicate to the staff that there will be an AKRON crowd. It was funny to be there today. Watching the 5 or so Suckeye fans sitting there with their heads down and getting frustrated all afternoon. And they couldn't even hear their game, and could only see it on a few monitors. I loved it For God's sake, this is Akron...and it should be that way. SeeTee...the Suckeye fans will appear here again soon, as soon as they figure out what to say this week. Cowlumbus State spends more money than any school in the county on athletics, returned 19 starters, and the only thing they have to show for themselves through 4 games is a convincing win over a 1-AA team. Sad.

Sad.skip-zip...you don't speak up much during football season, but this post is right on. I didnt make either of the last two watch parties at OBC. I was in Syracuse, and I chose to stay home this week to get some work done while the Zips overmatched Army. Those Suckeyes will lose to Minnesota next week, mark my words. I have a friend, a graduate from OSU, who follows both OSU and Akron. He disagreed that Ball State could defeat the Suckeyes...after this week's showing by both teams, he didnt disagree as much. Cinci is a tough matchup, but if Miami can put that many points on the board, our Zippers have a chance. I'm counting the MINUTES until Saturday at 9am. GO ZIPS! BEAT CINCINNATI! I asked to talk to the bar manager about that but he wasn't around. I make a point not to hate on OSU because it does nothing but make us look like little jealous third grade girls but I think it's kinda silly that they would make their bartenders wear OSU stuff when they are hosting a bunch of Akron fans. who knows maybe that'll chage as the season goes

I thought that was 100% BS.This was a game that UA was playing in and the bar was in Akron, yet they wore OSU gear. That is BS.

This was my 1st venture to OBC for one of these, and I was frankly surprised (like SeeTee) to see what I thought was a good turnout (especially with OSU playing at around the same time). If there were more for 'Cuse then great! Perhaps the later game time (3:30) may have helped with the crowd.....plus Syracuse is still a bigger name than Army, regardless of the recent Orange struggles. Also, I don't think there are any more TV road games, but I could be mistaken. Perhaps that means yesterday was the last event like this at OBC for the year? (I guess they COULD have them for the Toledo and Buffalo games, but what's the point in that).
skip-zip
Happy to be able to give you guys a perspective, being at the OBC for each of the last two games. There was indeed FAR more people there for the Syracuse game, and pretty dramatically. I'd say the size of the Syracuse crowd compared to the Army crowd was about 3 to 1. I hope that's not a bad sign. zipseuph....thanks for speaking up for us. Listen...you all know I speak like I do about OSU because they compete against us for athletes, fans, students, media attention, etc. And of course, I am fully aware that more people in Ohio support that school than any other. But, I think it's incredibly ridiculous (and I see all of you agree) for an AKRON bar to be hosting an AKRON party, hiring a DJ to play AKRON songs, giving away AKRON prizes, playing the AKRON game on nearly every TV in the place......but....Having your staff dressed in OSU gear?Just makes no sense. Dr Z
You can buy OSU gear at the gas station, Walmart, Biglots the grocery store, where is a bar worker going to get Zips gear? I love the Zips and have to go out of my way to get nice Zips stuff. The answer is, don't wear any schools gear during the Zips games. Then, about 25 minutes later, walk in and say "Here are "X" shirts, free of charge. All we ask is that you wear them on game day. Thanks for your support."Then walk out the door, into the sunset. For the 3 road games so far this year, we've given them a decent amount of business, the least they could do is wear the Zips shirts. johnnyzip84
Maybe we should all "pass the hat" and give g-mann17 a donation. It's the "grass roots" approach that seems to have more success sometimes. I'm also wondering about the head of the alumni group who does the welcoming at the door (I don't recall his name right now). Maybe he has an opinion/idea on what might be done. At least OSU will not be playing that day and they should all be wearing Zips gear.
