Captain Kangaroo Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 I'm as guilty and any fan in sometimes getting caught up in the little things and overlooking the big picture. I want to thank the Zips players and staff for beating K.e.n.t. State this past Saturday. I know this is a game you focused on for the past 370-or-so days and to come out on top is awesome! Congratulations to the AK-Rowdies, who had a MAJOR impact on the game, making noise and wreaking havoc from start to finish (no one left early)!Congrats to the UA fans who accounted for about 9,000 of whatever stadium attendance was announced! The Zips not only beat K.e.n.t., they demoralized them. On their home field. In front of a regional TV viewing audience. In front of about 9,000 Zips fans, and probably a good number of local recruits. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! :bow:Now go out and beat BG and get to 4-3, 1st place in the MAC East going into our "bye-month!" Quote
Zips fan Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 I agree! Thank you to the players, coaches and fans for making this a great victory! It takes alot of dedication to get a win out there and the coaches keep getting the job done against Can't. Way to go Zips! Quote
zen Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 You're right Cap'n. I think a thank-you should not be left as assumed.A loss to Can't is a big downer. A win should be appreciated. Quote
RootforRoo44 Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 hey, now the season is officially a success as far as im concerned. Glad that place out east got put in their place Quote
GoZips Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 Cap'n, excellent points, well said. While the game may have been regionally televised it was shown on many, many stations.I often visit a popular chat room on PalTalk named "Talking College Football, etc". It is largely anACC, SEC oriented room with a lot of abusive insults. A number of the regulars (all living in the South) complimented me on Akron's good lookingperformance on TV. Got razzed a little for not blowing Cant out. But, all in fun.Until the Zips beat NC State I took a lot of heat in there. Now I feel accepted. These are VERY, VERYknowledgeable fans. They hate the Suckies and Notre Dame. Quote
skip-zip Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 In the long run.....these last two wins over Can't were very, very important for one reason. After they buried us two years ago at their place, the typical NE Ohio high school football player, who may want to go to a MAC level school, may have been wondering if Can't might be shifting the balance of power among the two NE Ohio major colleges. We needed to put that notion to rest, and show that we remain the superior program in the eyes of those potential recruits. Quote
akronad Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 CK: I agree. We sometimes get caught in all of the hyperbole, but the bottom line is it is W for the "Good Guys" and an L for "Can't.Also, my son who lives in Arkansas, was watching and game and boy was he shoocked when it came on. He text me with the following : " They better rule that a TD".Now let's go clip the Falcon's wings. Quote
GoZips88 Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 Excellent thread ... yes, THANK YOU players and staff. HUGE downer when we lose to Can't in anything, especially men's basketball and football. Great feeling walking out of their place on Saturday after bagging the W. Can't wait for the Edelman-less Flushes to walk into The Info next year - - "Flush, I've a feeling we're not in the Rubber Bowl anymore!" Quote
Dr Z Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 Now the chant "Just like football" works at the JAR. Quote
Zip N' Dots Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 I must thank JD for the best quote to an ABJ reporter that I have seen in awhile.''I gave myself a game ball for the five heart attacks I had,'' Brookhart quipped Quote
RowdyZip Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 I must thank JD for the best quote to an ABJ reporter that I have seen in awhile.''I gave myself a game ball for the five heart attacks I had,'' Brookhart quippedAnyone hear Igor's quote on the post game? My friend and I had just got to the car, hoping to hear Steve French's thoughts, when we were just in time to hear post-game interviews with some players. Joe Dunn asked Igor if he "felt" for Can't kicker Reed being in that situation. Igor said (to the effect) that he'd never been in that situation, then followed with "Well, except for Cincinnati last week. If I would've made that, we would've won. That sucked." Best part is, that's not even the best quote. Joe Dunn then made the ill-advised question asking Igor how he was going to celebrate his second straight Wagon Wheel victory, to which he said: "Well, I'm twenty one. I'm gonna go get drunk." I like the guy just a little more after that one. He sure made some faces red there.Second, Deryn Bowser made an appearance next. This kid seems to have his head screwed on straight, a real class-act. He portrayed a love of the game and his teammates. If JD goes JUCO for receivers, high class kids like Bowser are the way to go. I'm glad we still have him for a season and a half. Quote
zips4ever2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 Agreed. Credit to our entire team for winning that game. It was an ugly game, but to come out on top is a great feeling. I really hope we get to chant "Just like football" during the basketball season. Love it! Quote

I really hope we get to chant "Just like football" during the basketball season. Love it!I have never heard so much of a response (from the casual Joe Fan) after a Zips game as compared to this one. I had off the wall people texting me about the game, ect... I heard QUITE a few people at work standing around talking about the game. I have never heard anyone actually stand in the hallways and sit in meetings and discuss Zips games before, so I was pleasantly surprised. I always had to butt into the conversation and give them the "this program is on the rise" speech. I made sure I told them about the new on campus stadium and more than a handful said they will be going to check them out.Akron being on television about every week and being competitive is really giving the program the much needed exposure it has always lacked. I was surprised how many "They held their own with Wisconsin for a while" and "they looked great against Syracuse" comments I heard. Lets just hope we can keep the ball rolling and impress every time we get that television exposure. Quote

Dunn had to know where that conversation was headed  . Frenchy sure did. That was some hilarious live radio! Of course the win made it that much funnier.I echo everyone's sentiments as far as the nature of this thread. I REALLY like the bond that is beginning to develop between this football team and the students. Hopefully this will continue to branch out to all UA alumni and the Akron community as a whole. Quote
ZippyRulz Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 I think some caution is in order here. You've got a car full of teens just reaching driving age and they hear a CFB player, whom they probably admire, talking about getting drunk, and everyone thinks it's funny...I just think that sets a dangerous tone. It surprises me that JD has his players saying that and that Dunn & French are fishing for that comment for giggles. Quote
RACER Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 the fact is like it or not kids on college drink.they drink alott, and the kid was being honest.while he probably never should have said it on the radio it does not change the fact.if a kid drinks because someone on the radio does ;then we are in trouble.to think high school & college kids don't drink is crazy. IMO it was not the subject matter that was humorous. It was the deadpan, frank delivery from Igor. I don't think JD had a chance to prevent any of this. It was all on Igor and Dunn. I would expect that they've both been approached regarding the incident and that JD may caution the entire team on these kind of interviews. Quote

It's not like he said "I'm grabbing the whole team and we are going to get drunk". Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted October 7, 2008 Author Report Posted October 7, 2008 Back in my day *insert old man voice here* I'd see all the players at The Townhouse after the game. The all got drunk. So did I. It was fun.If he's 21 he should have every right to get drunk on a Saturday night. And wake up at 1pm on Sunday and eat a box of Mac-n-Cheese. That's college. That said...don't announce it on the radio, you big dummy! Quote

JD should advise the players to keep their drunkenness off-air and the other JD should refrain from asking players how they intend to celebrate a victory. Quote
